Neil Young performs "Old Man" live at the Farm Aid concert in Tinley Park, Illinois on October 3rd, 1998. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.

Was my dad's favorite song. He drowned tragically at 44 years old. This was his favorite song. Also one of mine. Hard not to shed a tear or two every time I listen to it. 🤙

His name was Louie Avila. He and his wife lived on the ranch when Neil Young purchased it in the 1970's. Louie stayed on as a ranch boss until his retirement.

This song really deserves the steel guitar that cries so hard. But this semi-acoustic version is the best version I've heard of his without the steel guitar that has the lament.
