Neil Young is so talented. This was from like 1971 or so I think. He's on a primetime BBC broadcast in London England. This is great. Just a man and his acoustic guitar. No amplifiers, no other musicians or instruments. This is as real as music gets. Neil is around 75 years old today, and still performing.

Neil was born in Ontario, Canada as was I. The ranch he owned was in the Santa Cruz Mountains. I ran into him a couple of times at an out of the way tavern in the mountains. He was not performing just out enjoying himself. He is an immensely talented musician. He is a few years older than me and he got polio as a young boy. He has flourished and has had an amazing career.

Neil was part of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. He / they were a huge part of the music scene during the 60’s / 70’s, especially regarding social / political issues of the day. Don’t know if you know, 4 college students were shot / killed by the National Guard during a student protest on the campus of Kent State. Neil is a great lyricist and penned “Ohio” about the shootings within a couple of days of the event

It blows my mind that so many younger than me folks are unaware of the incredible societal changes and unrest in the 60s and 70s. Please do some research because most of us boomers gave so much in protest against the Vietnam war, racial inequality, police brutality, etc, and although hard to understand now, we were vilified by the establishment at the time. The Kent State tragedy was such a shocker. Ohio's National Guard opening fire on unarmed student protesters?! And there is a headline from a newspaper at the time calling the victims "bums". Many of us gave a lot, but some, like the 4 dead at Kent State, gave all.

If you've ever seen the movie Philadelphia with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, the song at the very end where they're showing home movies is Neil Young. He wrote it for the movie. Bruce Springsteen also wrote a song for the movie and it was him and Neil Young both nominated for an Oscar. Springsteen won. Neil Young should have won. Listen to his song Philadelphia!

That song, along with the look back video of his childhood is unbelievably moving. So simple a tune, yet one of the most beautiful..It's funny, I've listened to Neil since the late 60's (I'm 64) and love so many of his songs, but as I was listening to this, I was thinking of that tune. I then saw your comment...I like Bruce's song, too, but when I hear Neil's I have to stop whatever it is I'm doing.

I'm a Progressive Rock Freak and was in a Progressive Rock Band 40 years ago, but I enjoy all kinds of other music genres. Huge respect for Neil Young. Wilburn Reactions: Really dig your insightful, probing analysis. Beautiful, just beautifully aware, nuanced takes on the Beatles' eclecticism and overall genius, btw., and your review of CCR's Ramble Tamble was revelatory. Yes, El Cerrito-Berkeley-Oakland's CCR is one of the great protest/working-class (as in ALL working-class) bands to come out of America, a Bay Area "hippie" band with Sacto Valley country twang and Oakland R&B mojo. Looking forward to your analysis of Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On, Stevie's Inner Vision--masterworks of the classic Rock era, with What's Goin' On still so powerfully relevant (Gaye's explorations of environmental destruction, racism, economic inequalities are both piercing critiques and heartbreaking aural poetry that are literally fifty years ahead of his time) and pretty much anything by Prince. Please keep them coming.

Neil's a musical genius. Check out the song 'Four Dead In Ohio' which he did while he was in Crosby Stills Nash and Young...president Nixon actually put Neil (who's Canadian, BTW) on an FBI suspicious target list because of that hit song. As his band mate David Crosby said of him writing the song 'that's the bravest thing i've ever seen a musician do'.
