Good to see “Thrasher” make multiple lists - either that one or “Powderfinger” is my favorite on Rust and both may make my top 10. Probably have to throw in “Southern Man” and the title track from After The Gold Rush as well as “Heart Of Gold”, “Like A Hurricane” and the title track from Harvest Moon. I guess those are the obvious ones that come to mind for me, but there are a bunch of other contenders that could fill out the list.

His catalogue was a lot of fun to go through, although I can't think of my top 10 without looking up his songs. Keep on Rocking is simply epic and inspiring for so many bands. Pearl Jam doing that song is what got me into Mr. Young, which is the real power of a good cover tune.

I've always thought that the live version of Danger Bird from Year of The Horse is miles better than the original version on Zuma. The new Rust Bucket version is also incredible. Also great to see Words getting a mention, although once again, I much prefer the longer jammed out versions of that song. Just beautiful.

I might be in the minority, but I love his reedy, imperfect vocals. From an early age, he was far older than he seemed. Some of my favorite music ever. A modern-day comparison, as far as lyrics and songwriting, would be Jason Isbell. Jason has a better singing voice, and definitely captures the spirit of the reflective young man. These are my top five. The Needle and The Damage Done. Two minutes of mourning and saying this could be me. Down By The River -Don't setting for anything other than the album version. Sloppy guitar solos interlaced with the story of a man that did something very, very bad. Hey Hey, My My - Impossibly fuzzed-out guitar. I guarantee there is a 14 year old somewhere in their garage right now, learning this song. Sample and Hold - The Trans album holds a special place in my heart. A jarring change in direction, but somehow brilliant and prescient. I was obsessed with his Berlin concert and this is a standout for me. Cinnamon Girl - An all time favorite for me. Ten silver saxes, a bass with a bow, the drummer relaxes and waits between shows for his cinnamon girl. I mean, c'mon.... Great post, guys and Cheers!

If I drafted a top 50 I would be sad for all the great songs I have to leave out...from Sugar Mountain (which was not on the debut album but only a single B-side in 1969) to Milky Way (on Colorado, at first you think you know it already but then it takes a lot of turns)...I do not count his 2020 album as a real release, it is rather an archive record and most songs were already around for decades. 10. Southern Pacific (from Reactor) 9. Down by the River / Cowgirl in the Sand (those are an inseparable pair, the two epic tracks from his second album) 8.
