People talking about how the instrumental is all cheery makes me think that they've never heard the original Doobie Brothers song. Yeah the instrumental is upbeat, but the lyrics are about unrequited love, about a man who loves a woman who doesn't love him back. It's a bit depressing, and frankly, pretty similar in tone to the Linkin Park song.

The beauty of this song is the juxtaposition of the songs that were sampled. "In The End" and "What a Fool Believes" sound like complete opposite songs, and yet they're both about the same thing: a man mournfully resigning himself to his failures.
@caledio57555 жыл бұрын
"'The End' begins a thematic arc at the heart of Mouth Moods addressing the perverse allure of nihilism. The angsty vocal, lifted from Linkin Park’s 'In the End', is set against the bright and lively instrumental to the Doobie Brothers' 'What a Fool Believes'. Thus, while the song initially appears very bleak, Cicierega uses the juxtaposition to make a tacit criticism of the nihilism espoused by Linkin Park: 'In the end, it doesn’t even matter' is just 'What a Fool Believes'.”

This song, like most of Neil's work, is more brilliant than first meets the eye. The two songs mashed here, In the End and What a Fool Believes, are in their own ways about the same topic: harboring feelings for someone who could never hope to return them. So not only do these two songs somehow mesh well as music, but the lyrics of Linkin Park are just as relevant as the music of the Doobie Brothers 30 years apart.

The user "Caledio" said something that made me think: he analyzed the song's lyrics to portray how two tunes with such an opposite tones create a clever commentary on the futility of destructive nihilism, using the happy music of "What a Fool Believes" to contradict the message of "It doesn't even matter". He also concluded that the lesson it portrays could perfectly be summed up with *"In the end, it doesn't even matter" is just "What a Fool believes".* My reasoning slightly tweaks this last summary into a different version which includes the title of this song (The End), while keeping the meaning Caledio observed in the original. This song uses the extreme inconsequentialism of Linkin Park's lyrics to ridiculize destructive nihilism, making use of the directly opposite feeling conveyed by "What a Fool Believes" to remove the impact of the original message. In this scenario, Linkin' Park could be considered the personification of "the fool" who inadvertedly follows an autodestructive path for no real reason. Using the original names of the songs much like Caledio did, we can obtain a nice mention to this mashup and the intent of it, packed in a simple sentence: *In "The End", it doesn't even matter what a fool believes*

I honestly feel like people are looking too deep into this song. The real meaning of it is just so simple. Do you want to know why he mixed The End with What A Fool Believes? Just simply look at the tracklisting. Why is it in the middle? Thinking it's actually the end of the album is just what a fool believes. It's most likely just that. And Neil probably just thought it'd be funny to put a depressing song over an upbeat instrumental. That's really it.

as an existentialist who knows a bunch of nihilists i can confirm this is accurate
@ZeroToNowhere4 жыл бұрын
As a Nihilist, I'm confused. Nihilism is always presented as this negative belief system. Nothing matters, all will crumble, but there's a freedom in it. Nothing matters and value is subjective, so I get to decide what matters and what I choose to be significant is the most significant. I also believe there's no free will, so I don't even really choose. I'm not here to make choices, I just find meaning in whatever I'm doing and I am the ultimate authority on how important it is. This is why The Oracle from The Matrix is my favorite: "You didn't come here to make the choice, you've already made it. You're here to try to understand WHY you made it."

Next time you see happy old people go and talk to them about the secrets of being happy. They will all tell you the same thing, "happiness is a choice". It's morbid to realize your time on this planet is short, but it's the best way to remind yourself to just enjoy it.
@KaaneDragonShinobi7 жыл бұрын
It's somewhat odd. The lyrics of this song describe a bitter reminiscence of love long lost, whereas the original music to this song, What a Fool Believes by the Doobie Brothers, is the backdrop to a sad fool who still doesn't recognize his one time fling/obsession with a woman will ever come to be. Natural sequel to the latter song, perhaps? The original subject of that song becoming angered at his perceived rejection despite never having been accepted in the first place, still in denial, blaming the love interest for his failure? Regardless, a very intelligent pairing, it's more than just an arbitrary choice imo. Kudos to Neil.
