My 103-year-old mom just died yesterday. I spent a lot of time with her at her residence over the last two years and one of things we really enjoyed was playing this song and singing along together. She loved it. Yesterday, just hours before she passed, my sister and I played it once last time for her. Even in her semi-conscious agitated state, this song brought a smile to her lips and she was moving her arms in time to the beat. Thank-you Neil .. your beautiful song brought my mom so much joy many many times over the years.

You can find some, in other continents too, I guess. Like this norwegian singer, song writer and record producer, Aurora, who crafts her musical art mostly by herself, as she wishes. Personally, her songs in her albums are not always for me (she's a "pop singer", and I'm mostly metal, with a bit blues, rock, folk, and I've enjoyed Neil Young for about 30 years now), but when it comes to live performances, she's great, especially in acoustic set up. She's not the new Neil Young or Aerosmith, for sure, but there's still some talent on earth, that being said maybe not really in main stream music industry. In exemple among many others here in YT: AURORA Live from COP26 | UMA Entertainment: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p66AfLOVtc65gGQ.html She has plenty of live sessions, where she sometimes varies, from slightly to completely, her rendition, as she feels it in the moment. It's worth to dig a bit (here on YT). Maybe you won't like it or her, but at least there're still creativity, talent and genuine renditions, even if it's not that easy to find.

@@Josian-ps7fb We got some new people - Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, lots of country artists are writing crazy good songs and singing them from the heart! Not quite the same, but I think Neil might agree that they're damn good!

I just turned 30.... Looking back at what I have done, so many teens and younger men seem to claim they have it hard.... At 3 years old I was walking half a mile to work a farm gathering eggs and milking cows as well as scouts and walking about 7 miles round trip to fish the local pond. There were months where we'd have to walk behind the potato harvester to get food. At 11 I had the biggest newspaper route in the town about 300 papers and although it was tough waking up at 1am delivering all of them before returning home by 6am to get ready for school.... I'd do my homework in class so I could have half an hour or so to play before I would go to sleep about 5pm. My day off was Sundays so every Saturday I would force myself to stay awake if it wasn't winter and I would lay on my bed staring outside feeling the fresh cool air brush my face and hear the crickets and grasshoppers chirping as well as the birds songs.....the best was on the rainy days after school I wouldn't be able to do anything so I would get the breeze and the light mist as well as the dust smell as the rain first starts. Anyway that was my reward from the creator then it was beautiful. At 16 I started to work at a feedmill bagging and stacking grains anywhere from 10lb burlap sacks to 200lb feed bags.... every weekend it was truck time meaning we would load a dump truck up with the feed bags various sizes as there were multiple deliveries to make all over about 100 mile route. We had to be back at the mill by 5. When I was 17 I started working drilling natural gas wells 12 hour shifts 6 days a week most times but sometimes we would have to pull a 13 day stretch because you can't leave the bit in the hole.... after that job I became a farmer again because I didn't want to travel and be in a motel every night all year. I stayed working on the farm but the work wasn't worth the pay in my opinion so I asked my boss for a 7500.00 loan so I could start my own business escorting oversized loads....I know I wouldn't be home nightly, but at least it would be my vehicle and I would be self employed, if I wanted to stay in a motel instead of the car I could. I made better than 500.00-700.00 each day after fuel repairs and such it was still better than 300.00 a day.... I got to the point I would be out over the road for two sometimes three months straight....I do not recommend as you will read. I was getting so busy there got to be a 3 week stretch where I was booked to escort everything from big yachts, wind turbines, road equipment, swimming pools, and so on....the money was flowing in and I wanted my own house at 26 years. I was set up for the final run that would put me to the point I could buy my house straight cash and the final run was from upstate Maine to New Mexico and was an emergency run requested by both New Mexico and Maine they were offering double pay as well as return mileage.... I returned home to wash clothes and get things ready for a long trip just got done eating and put my plate in the sink when I heard what sounded like a 12 gauge going off beside my head. I suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm...... So when I hear the younger generation complain about such little things it reminds me of why my type of people are the older generations than myself as they lived fast and hard like myself...... burning the wick at both ends as some would say.... So old man look at my life 😎👍🏻

Lost my Mom in 2018. Pops remarried in 1991 and had a daughter with her. She passed in 2016, and my half sister tried to sell his house out from underneath him. I feel like she's a POS for that, but it has made him and me closer since then. He abandoned me and my Mom to start a new life and it has bit him in the butt. He's going to be 72 this year and I am blessed to be able to assist him with his endeavors now. Guess God has allowed us to make up for lost time. I still feel slighted, but I'm not bitter about it now. I thank God every day that I can be here for him, now that he needs me! Funny how life works out

Here, NY explains what prompted him to write this song: 'About that time when I wrote Heart of Gold, and I was touring, I had also-just, you know, being a rich hippie for the first time-I had purchased a ranch, and I still live there today. And there was a couple living on it that were the caretakers, an old gentleman named Louis Avila and his wife Clara. And there was this old blue Jeep there, and Louis took me for a ride in this blue Jeep. He gets me up there on the top side of the place, and there's this lake up there that fed all the pastures, and he says, "Well, tell me, how does a young man like yourself have enough money to buy a place like this?" And I said, "Well, just lucky, Louis, just real lucky." And he said, "Well, that's the darnedest thing I ever heard." And I wrote this song for him.'

This song is always complicated for me, and really makes me emotional. My dad and I had a very contentious relationship throughout most of my life, except towards the end when he died. And ironically, not only did we look so much alike, but also in character. I catch myself thinking , saying and doing things that he would. “Old man look at my life. I’m a lot like you were” really hits home .

I was 17 when I bought this 8 track. My dad was 24 when I was born. I deliberately planned my sons birth at my age of 24. My dad hated me since birth so the line never meant that much to me to mean that much to you. Poetic justice. I broke the trend and cherish my son with love. 70 now and rolling home to dad.

My father passed September 22, 1971. My first day of High School, then 10th grade. Life changed, and this song told my story in so many ways. I left school, home, and traveled from L.A. to San Francisco. Grew up quickly, playing my way through time and places… I’m 67 today, and this song still takes me back to where I was then. As with many of his songs, they all seem to connect with people and pieces of times in our lives. I’m a lot like you were’.. Thanks.. Neil

hi, there is another music video the Bernstein tapes that has Neil telling the story of how he wrote the song. he is referring to the old man that lived on the ranch he had bought, and he told the old man he didn't want him to have to leave the ranch and to stay there and live with Neil on the ranch they both then owned, now that is a blessing from one heart to another. Simple Love is goodness. Amen
