On 20 October 2003, Nelson Mandela made Queen Elizabeth II laugh with a greeting that was at once informal, warm and respectful. Meeting the Queen and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in Buckingham Palace, the Former President of South Africa introduced the Royal couple to members of his family before attending a special reception for Rhodes Scholars.

Her Majesty simply never missed the tiniest of details. Her stepping forward to shake her blind guests' hand was so telling of her grace. She will forever be missed 😢❤

@@tulinfirenze1990 indeed. So sad. Her place will forever be empty, but she will live in our hearts. I am South African but she made me feel British. Such was her global appeal. RIP

He was the closest head of state to her during her long reign. They were very comfortable with each other and there existed a deep mutual respect.

@@udeekoHe was the closest to her? No one comes close to Madiba for his indomitable spirit for giving his life to free people that suffered an evil racist doctrine that lasted for many decades. sleeping in a small cell in cement for for close to 27 years. Nelson Mandela suffered pain of not seeing his family and children for over a decade while he was banned from public visitation. Really incomparable figure in history of politics.

@ndodamakayi5220 : You misunderstood my post. I basically meant that Mandela was her closest friend amongst fellow heads of state. If you read the whole post that's exactly what I meant.

Why does the Queen seem to stare at a few people after they have gone past? I got the impression that sometimes she was trying to recall where she had seen them before. One young man she looks up and down at after he has gone past, like she was checking out his suit and shoes. Amazing and fascinating footage.

I wonder why the late Madiba always wore batik shirts... by the way HMQ looked spectacular in red ❤

It definitely made him stand out, as these shirts were not commonly worn in South Africa and became known in South Africa as Madiba shirts.

Telling someone they keep looking younger is one of the least "unusual" ways of greeting someone you know and like. This is yet another ridiculous title, aimed at getting the view count up. Thanks for the upload, though. It's lovely.

It's an unusual way to greet the Queen, in that personal or personal-sounding remarks are not said.

Has the pandemic taught you nothing? Do you have any idea how many hands Her Majesty held in her lifetime? Just look at this clip for one small reception. Gloves are not only proper, but extremely practical. They keep everyones hands clean and offer support for her hands. They should bring them back into vogue.

This is the reason Princess Dianna remains the greatest figure of the Royal family. She went on to hospitals and shook people with HIV with bare hand even though advised otherwise by the royal family.

Special people forget apartheid in S.A. was legal and ignored by The Queen. Mandela signed of on a bombing in response to the Sharpeville Massacre, during which police opened fire on a crowd of anti-apartheid marchers, killing 69 people and wounding 186 others. Of course, no policemen were charged.
