Leaving out the "trunks" doesnt season the firewood. It has to be split open before it can be seasoned.

Bad facts James, although 'trunks' is like calling an ambulance a 'nee nar'
@falfield
@falfield 5 жыл бұрын
In fact, foul mouth, James is quite right. The bark was left on the logs and bark is very good at preventing fluid loss - it evolved to do this for live trees & it carries on holding moisture in after death. So when those logs are cut and split, the ends may be dry but the centres will not be, and I suspect that most of the drying occurs in the barns. This is significant for customers as quite a bit of fungal decay will have occurred by then and the split log shown being tested for moisture level had clear decay markings. It is significant because what unit are logs sold by? (volume) and on what does caloric value depend? (weight). And what does fungal decay do? (it causes weight loss without shrinkage. So all the time those logs lie in the stack the cost of customers' heating is going up. There are even suggestions from Scandinavia (where a long tradition and deep knowledge of woodfuel exists) that the establishment of fungal growth in a log changes its properties so that it CANNOT dry as fully as a freshly cut and split log. I think it it thought something to do with the retentive properties of the fungal hyphae. Lars Mytting (an expert if ever there was one) recommends splitting within a month of felling. Now, an aphorism for you Jacques - by the English poet Blake: "Having nothing better to say, he swore".

@@falfield Whilst I agree with much of what you say. We do experience excellent drying in the stacks on the farm. When wood goes through a harvester much of the bark gets punctured or even ripped off. Because we are on top of a hill we get strong winds and lots of exposure to sunshine which helps massively. We are currently processing wood that is just over a year old and dried to 25% in the middle. We do not always do this well if bark is on as you say or if it is oak.
