Malta's megaliths were mostly built during the Neolithic period, which is an era belonging to prehistory. This means there's no textual or epigraphic evidence to tell us why these cultures invested so much time and energy in stone monuments or what they believed in.
However, prehistoric people did leave behind art as far back as the palaeolithic. In this video I discuss the art the temple people of Malta left behind, its possible symbolic significance and how that fits together with whatever else we known about this culture.
