The 2023 FIDE World Chess Championship is a 14-game match taking place in the St. Regis Astana Hotel in Astana, Kazakhstan on April 9-30 between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren, who finished 1st and 2nd in the 2022 Candidates Tournament. Reigning World Champion Magnus Carlsen has chosen not to defend his title. The first player to reach 7.5 points wins, while a 7:7 tie will be decided by a playoff. The prize fund is €2 million, split 60:40, or 55:45 if it goes to a playoff. No draw offers are allowed until after move 40.
Each player has 120 minutes for 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, with a 30-second increment starting only from move 61. A playoff will consist of four 25-minute games, with a 10-second increment from move 1. If still tied, up to two pairs of 5+3 games will be played. If tied again, single 3+2 games are played, with colours reversed each game, until one player wins.

The first ceremonial move, d4, was made by a little kid with White. This explains why the second ceremonial move (0:26), d5, was made with Black.

Yeah, I felt that the little girl who played the ceremonial first move was among the best moments of the whole World Championship (The chess has not been good.) The WCC should not be decided by short time control games. After game 14 it should just be next to win a game is the champ. For the title to be decides in armageddon is the equivalent of flipping a coin.

Eric Rosen is always looking for creative ways to checkmate his opponent, for example by en passant or castling queenside, when such moves immediately end the game. I might be misremembering this, but I seem to recall one game where Hikaru was killing his opponent and decided to promote every single pawn of his to a knight. Then he simply horsed around until his opponent ran out of pasture to run in.

The LiChess engine is magnificent at forcing a stalemate. I used to find myself in positions where I was sure I could queen my pawn, as in this projected endgame, and the engine positioned its king where it forced a stalemate. In my whole life I've never managed to salvage a draw from a lost position in this manner. I just can't count the necessary moves carefully enough.

It uses a table base When there are very few pieces left, all the possible positions have been worked out and it's known whether it's a draw or if one side can force a win how many moves to checkmate So it just checks the position after every legal move and plays whichever gives the soonest mate (or if there's only a draw it plays a random drawing move)

@@anonymousAJ I believe the table base currently stands at 7 pieces on the board (any combination 7 pieces by both White and Black); all possible positions of all possible combinations are compiled, and a complete tree of move sequences is stored for each starting position. Maybe the base is now 8 or more?

At 16:06 is R(D) x Bishop worth a try? It seems you could liquidate from there with black ending a pawn up in the endgame. A distant pawn that would just about guarantee a win.

For the people always asking, what does Agad do with "sorry about that", you can hear in this video that it hasn't been done :) I'm not complaining, I'm just giving ithe info. Also, the gues made the cereminial move with the black pawn because th move with white was done by the little girl, who is hidden behind Ding in that photo. For some reason they had two guests today.

I don't think it's abt finding the whole engine line, I think it's more abt staying patient and making it's difficult to white to move and avoiding simplification. Make small progress, then u take it from there

6:22 I know I’m probably missing something but what if white played Bishop to H 5? The Knight can’t capture or check mate. Black would need to react to this and if he brought down the g pawn White could sacrifice the bishop and then if captured take a second pawn with the queen with checkmate Obviously I’m an idiot so I missing something can somebody tell me what I missing lol

I watched most of the 6 hours. Had to see how ag does it. Dubov gave some of the lines and nepo was better at some point in the middle and they went all the way just to end up with this draw. Great final game though you could feel the tension in every move.

At 3:40, why no mention of Bxe6, fxe6, Nxe6 forking the queen and rook. This is a combo I often look for and it seems you're getting a rook for bishop and two pawns and opening up the king.

You're getting a rook and 2 pawns for a bishop and knight, but the engine is showing -2.5 for Black after 1. Bxe6 fxe6 2. Nxe6 Qc4 3. Nxf8 Bxf8 4. e4 b6 5. Qa4 Qxa4 6. Nxa4 Nxe4 7. 0-0 Ndf6 The board is open and black still has the bishop pair, and black's knights are in much more active positions.

Hi Agadmator. I love your videos, but could you not use two people shaking hands as the thumbnail in future? I wasn't able to watch this game live, and so I was looking forward to watching your analysis of it later, seeing the game played out and only finding out the result at the end. I've done this several times in this and the previous World Championship, but this time the thumbnail was a bit of a spoiler and all the suspense was lost.

Thank you for your excellent commentary on all the world championship games. I'm actually quite surprised by the 'club-like' level of this championship series. Not particularly high quality games. As carlsen says, ...has become world champion but not more than that!

What to say: Ding with crazy openings, Nepo taking advantage of it, Ding consuming time to mess it up more to find a way back in the game, Nepo with a winning move bit he blitzes (who knows why) ñ, blunders, and rather lose or draw the game... And then you go to press conference to hear many nonsense questions. Idk. It is a very exciting match but full of errors too. I can imagine Magnus rising his chin and smiling
