This reminded me of the first time I ever DM'ed a game. I decided to make a room of burlap beholders. When the PC's opened the door, one of the beholders dropped straight down on them. They all shat themselves, except the monk. The regular DM asked if I knew what I was doing and if I realized the CR of the beholder (this was in the 3.5 days). Once the monk hit the one in the door and all it did was swing back and forth.... that was my "passage" into being a regular DM. They really liked it after the fact.

fuse the Beholder w/ the Medusa; give it eye stocks instead of viper hair & poisonous claws instead of the hair viper fangs; guve it all abilities of both monsters. give this Behdusa a Spell-like ability like the Danse Macabre, but to use w/ the statues it made instead of undead. give it a court of Earth Elemental creatures & statue-turned fallen heroes... & a magic armor, because why not. enjoy the TPK

See my plan was to make a two stage campaign. The first stage works up to the Beholder, the second stage unwravels everything the Beholder had set up shop on top of, revealing the helpful NPC to be a super buffed Archmage type villain that had set things into motion centuries before just before his memories and magical power was suppressed.

That thing is _very_ powerful in the hands of a merciless DM. The Beholder is at least assumed to use each of its rays at random. The Atropal can just spend all of it's legendary actions to cause 1 level of exhaustion per round and kill most of the party in 6 rounds.

beholders are badass to use since there are SO MANY WAYS to kill your players! smashing players into each other with telekinesis, disintegrating the player's weapons, paralysing them, turning them to stone, filling them with too much energy for the player to handle... one time i made a extremely powerful beholder that had it's center eye act with glowing energy that acts a lot like a basilisks eyes, turning them into stone and whatnot. the players especially love aiming to chop the eyestalks off of beholders to limit their eye rays!

DOOM has actually already reskinned the beholder as another beholder-like creature by the name of the cacodemon. I've used them in my Starfinder campaign... you just take away all the eye stalks and usual spells, then add horns for a gore attack, a fire ball spell like ability as an attack, a bite, and a slam.

I use home-brewed altered Beholders as boss monsters. Let me introduce you to Ten-Eye. He is an electro-mechanical-magical augmented Beholder, basically, someone from our universe would see him as a cyborg Beholder. His main eye is super anti-magic, draining charges while within the eye and turned off magical items stay off for 10 minutes after exposure to the eye. The eye blasts affect things only hit by magic but are somehow immune to anti-magic and magic resistance. When nearly killed, he teleports away to recover. Most of his minions are either Clockwork (mechanical golems of some sort) or Dark Elf operatives of the city he owns property in.

You never hear about anti (or evil) Paladins of wicked deities. I had them in my game many times. I even had evil Paladins of Magic. They were battle monsters with priest and mage spells but specialized in fighter tactics. Anti Paladins of Death make great hordes of undead and could have vampire slaves.

I'd rather make it a What Would You Do For a God To Call Your Own? Campaign. The pcs help out the unborn god by organizing a cult that can pray him in the image of a god they (the characters) would actually want to worship. Lots of challenges in that: first write down the doctrine and the legends and deeds for said ideal god (all of which will become retrispectively real with his ascension to actual godhood status,) gather the followers, deal with apostasy in the cult, people not praying with sincere faith thus tainting your god to be, schisms etc. Good luck nursing a god into existence. But if they manage that 😀😁

Omg that sounds amazing I'm going to have to do that. It would be interesting if there was 2 or 3 and you could pick one and then you had to kill the others to help make the one you chose a god, making there be a larger moral choise of who they should choose.
@GlacialScion

Mr L You could also tie the party's actions to the development of the god without telling them. If they succeed in creating the god they want, it ends up also being a reflection of how the party acted throughout the course of the campaign. They stole alot? Their god doesn't believe in the concept of ownership. They murder hobo'd a few times? Their god doesn't think life is all that special. Anything and everything that characterized their campaign could come into play, good or bad. Maybe even make it an inverse response to their actions. Tons of possibilities. I love this idea.

I like the idea of the god fetus it made me think of a couple of different ways I can make a campaign based around one. I like the idea of the cult worshiping it but I would instead have a bunch of undead. In my mind it's probably more of a mindless monster so it could just be somewhere creating a undead plague that needs to be stopped and the party needs to figure out where it's coming from.

The beholder is the most iconic, not the coolest. There are a ton of other monsters that can be just as, if not more terrifying. The Brass Dragon for example can be an utterly terrifying thing for a person to come across on their own. Especially a bard. Brass love to talk and if their conversation partner is very interesting, but wants to leave, the dragon will bury them to their head in sand to keep them from leaving. Then, depending on how the conversation goes, they will leave them there. In my opinion, the possibility of this happening alone makes them one of the more dangerous metallic dragons.

My biggest problem with Beholders isn't even talked about. It the lair actions. Random eye beam every 6 seconds as you try to navigate a dungeon full of slaves as well. I greatly enjoy the idea of the villain magic user that has ingrained themselves into society so much that the party can't just walk up and fight them but must first prove that they are evil

Did charisma have anything to do with physical appearance in other editions? I ask because Ted said, “The thing looks disgusting, but yet it’s got a 24 charisma.” The 5e PHB states, “Charisma measures your ability to interact effectively with others. It includes such factors as confidence and eloquence, and it can represent a charming or commanding personality.” Nothing about that mentions physical appearance which brings me to my original question. Only asking because I’ve seen others reference physical appearance and charisma as feeding off of each other.
@MartyrPandaGaming
@MartyrPandaGaming 6 жыл бұрын
No, Charisma has never bee a reflection of a characters level of appearance. It is a common mistake made among newer players and those who play on the persistent worlds of Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 for PC. That said, in my opinion, you could give advantage or disadvantage on Charisma based skill checks (within reason) depending on if a character is interacting with common folk, nobility and royalty. I would imagine a character with a kept appearance is going to have an easier time speaking with a Lord, than someone covered in weeks old dirt and blood.

clericofchaos1 wait really I love low levels. Resource management is so much more important at low levels. You have less spells slots which are weaker, you have less hit dice and hp. All monsters seem so much more terrifying. Level 3 to around 10 is my personal favorite part of dnd
@clericofchaos1
@clericofchaos1 6 жыл бұрын
that's fine...for you. i play games like this to escape from reality though. that's why, to me, the early levels aren't "terrifying" they're a grind. a boring slogfest to get to the real meat of the game.
@maromania7
@maromania7 6 жыл бұрын
we aren't ignoring stats. the exact opposite in fact, low levels are te areas where your stats actually matter and games aren't a matter of rocket tag while you wonder why the wizard needs a party, given his future vision and insane damage burst from distance and meatshields and wishes. it's the time where that 1 point in constitution is a matter of life and death, and there's a decent line between slaughter and TPK. You want crazy powerful with huge numbers? pathfinder's still alive and kicking, it's literally made for that style. I've got half the bestiary memorized, It's great for when you wanna let loose with crazy powers. but 5e's focused on RP and combat, the developers have made it clear that they aren't spending much time focused on 12+ because their target audience doesn't typically play that far. every system doesn't have to work for every style.
