When it was first announced that the sequel to How I Met Your Mother was coming to Hulu, many fans weren't sure how to take How I Met Your Father. Would How I Met Your Father come anywhere close to living up to the standard set by How I Met Your Mother? Or would this new Hilary Duff driven sitcom fall short like the previous attempt. Well, after 2 short seasons, it seems fans got their answer when How I Met Your Father was abruptly cancelled before getting a third season.

I don't always agree on your takes, but this is spot on. What kept me from liking this show was the dynamic of the friends group. They totally felt like strangers to one another and barely gave you the feeling they knew each other. The relationships felt forced and it felt like the show was trying to tell you they were friends vs actually showing you they were. In HIMYM by contrast you knew the core group had history and it felt like they knew each other forever, because they did. The only exception was Barney, who outlandishly forced himself into the group. But his introduction was so funny and jarring, but at the same time it didn't really skip a beat. By the next episode he was part of the gang and you didn't question it. Like you said, it's magic. HIMYM is special and it's hard to capture that again.

I would agree with this. I kinda understand why they did this since they wanted her to meet all of the potential fathers in one night to have a different take on the mystery. But in doing that, they missed out on a core element of the original cast. I think if they really wanted to go that route, they could have made Sophie, the only outsider in the friend group, and in the first episode, she could have had a meaningful connection (either funny or heartfelt) with all of the main cast, and the episode could have ended with Sophie being despondent and the group collectively deciding to adopt her and boost her spirits. But even relationships that should have had a lot of history like Jesse and Ellen were written with them being estranged for most of their childhood. They could have given them a strong sibling bond on the outset, even if she was still new to New York after her divorce. They could have made Charlie an old friend of Sid or Hannah, that was just in town for their engagement party, but decided to stay after meeting Val. They also could have had Sophie and Val end up at the engagement party serendipitously for their own reasons, have the plotlines converge rather than Val and Charlie just being along for the ride of Sophie's adventure. I really wanted to like this show, but the jokes were never as clever or relatable as the OG show. It's tone reminds me of an ABC family sitcom like Young and Hungry or Baby Daddy

Thing is, Parks and Rec went from a bad/mediocre first season to being arguably the best sitcom on TV its second. It’s leap in quality wasn’t just from bad to meh with occasional glimpses of not bad or even good; it was from bottom half to top tier. So while it may sound similar, it isn’t close to the same because it was the jump in quality and subsequent buzz/word of mouth that came from it was much bigger. Although, as a side note, I suspect Parks and Rec would have been a 2 season or less sitcom if it came out today for exactly the same reason HIMYF failed, especially if it was on a streaming service and not a network, as there seems to be very little patience to actually let shows find their stride anymore.

I feel like season two was *MUCH* better than the first season and had it been given a third season, that's when it would have shined. Also, I abhor the fact that shows now get 6-10 episodes per season now. I hate how streaming halved the episodes and still expect the same reward.

Shows go on based on their viewership. Either you're on the upswing or on the downswing. This series was polarizing from the very beginning and I bet the numbers for the second season were much lower than the first. I agree about continuing a show longer if it's extraordinarily good and the backlash from cancelling it will be harmful in itself, but if that isn't the case, then there's no reason why the platform should keep running it at a loss.

Wouldn't work, they had an episode of HIMYM about her life and her life is too tragic for comedy. You would have to introduce a fiance she is in love with who dies suddenly in a car accident and then have her spend years of grief before she's finally ready to see someone again and that person is Ted. And then you know your main character had to die off like 10 years after they meet. Ultimately the knowledge that the fiance will die, his actual death, and the grief afterwards would destroy it.

1) HIMYM was in the verge of cancelation for at least it's first 3 seasons. It wasn't an instant hit. When it started i didn't had anyone to chat about it. 2) Thinking it's success was the "mystery" of who the mother was is why EVERYONE is wrong. It was the charm it had with it's humor and the chemistry between the cast. The narration was also a nice touch and it was actually the only reason why the name of the show made sense, but Ted's kids already knew their mom's name. The main problem was that in the age of streaming your either a instant success or your doom to get getting cancelled and that doesn’t allow a show to find its audience before they cancel it with how i met your mother it had the time to find its audiences especially when dvd was the best way to catch up on what u missed cause I found the series in season 3 when I heard my favorite singer Britney Spears was going to make a an appearance as the secretary for Sarah chalke when she was removing Ted’s tramp stamp from his lower back and I instantly loved the show and went back and got the first 2 seasons DVD sets and loved it and with physical media becoming more niche there isn’t that time for a show to find its audience anymore and that hinders a show’s potential like the video pointed out if it had been allowed to continue we don’t know if it would’ve found it audience or not

More like two friend groups. Sophie and Valentina are besties and roommates. Same goes for Jesse and Sid. Ellen is in the loop by being Jesse’s sister that moved back to the east coast. And Charlie was in love with Valentina and followed her back to the states from England.

@@arfhat89 Yea, I was thinking the two main groups and then Charlie, as he and Valentina were still getting to know each other. So it's people from three different directions, kind of meeting up at around the same time. Perhaps saying "Three different friend groups" was a bit of a mislead.

What triggered me the most was the ending where the guy abandoned the love of his life for another woman in order to have children, then this woman dies and he goes straight back to the ancient one. Like, the fact that he made children with another woman who was never as important to him as his former love and then had the balls to come back and she just accepts it ??

I honestly never really gave How I Met Your Father a shot when it started. I was never against it, but what drew me off was that it seemed like a cash grab. HIMYM was great. I got into it around the time season 5 was airing and I was finishing up College. I still quote the show to this day. I honestly relate more to Ted, especially now that I'm 35 and still searching for my one, then I did back then. HIMYF just didn't connect with me. I watched an episode and realized, it just wasn't for me and didn't watch another episode

I havent finished the series yet, and I may not now due to it being cancelled, but my main complaint was always that the dialog didnt feel real. Meaning that the things that were said never felt like something a real person would say, and in many ways they would force the jokes and then back them with a laugh track. It just didn't feel real. In many ways we want characters to make choices we would make. Abed from Community states that in one of the halloween episodes when he is talking about why a story wasnt scary. He simply states that its not scary because the characters are not making choices the audience would make. This very much also applies to comedy and drama. Of course there should be an element of surprise, but the reactions should feel real. Many new shows I have found get this wrong. A newer show that does this correctly is Big Mouth. It puts the characters in familiar situations and makes us feel validated and connected due to the fact that the characters make choices that make sense, and say things that feel organic and not forced. Its a reason I go back and watch old shows over and over rather then jump into new ones.

I have no interest in new characters and modern era. There are two ways to go really. Try make a series for the young generation, and lose the original viewers, or do something that tries to work for the original viewers, but doesn't catch on with the youth. Hard to get both ways I think... and it never really hit either.

Honestly what was arguably more important to me is that HIMYF never played around with storytelling. It was a very linear experience, unlike HIMYM which would have episodes told in reverse order, or divided by each room of the house, or each character's individual story while running the race, etc, etc. It wasn't afraid to change up how the story was told, and that makes a world of difference.

HIMYM success is build on the fact that they’re given time to build their audiences and streaming services are non existent back then. Now HIMYF is a series on Hulu owned by a large conglomerate in Disney, HIMYF has bigger, more diverse cast members and perhaps even the bigger budget but the story telling seems lacking and I do give him credit as they’re significantly improving themselves on season 2 however the world is just too fast paced especially with Disney trying to control the streaming market and even just a small hiccup is non tolerable for them.

I agree with your take on the show. Most of those TV shows that last almost or over a decade running needed some time to find their footing. HIMYM, TBBT, Seinfeld, The Office. All of those had some things tweaked out from the first couple of seasons and then come the seasons that make us remember those shows mostly fondly. The issue here is that HIMYF was denied that. I mean, the step up from season 1 to 2 is noticeable and you see that the cast is finding their footing and the timing to make the show a good one, while the writers are also trying new things. But today, in a world that doesn't let a show take its time to find its footing, we're gonna get a lot of shows that maybe were cancelled too soon.

While I can think of many spinoffs that went on to be as beloved as the original, I can't think of reboots that have managed to do so. Part of it is that the new series is going to be judged against our nostalgia and love for the heights of the original. It will be really hard to get judged as a separate work and given the room to develop along different lines. Plus, there was a reason the original got canceled. It most likely overstayed and there wasn't much left to explore in the premise.

It was just getting started and I loved the fact the first episode set it a part by letting us know that one of the boys was the father and leading to speculation as to how. The reason that characters seem to not know each other is that even plot-line wise - they didn't. Sophie only knew her roommate, whom I would say she seemed close to as far as the type of character Valentina was. Then you have Charlie who just moved to NY, Ellen who just moved to NY and didn't have much of a relationship with her brother beforehand. Sid and Jesse knew eachother but that actually didn't seem that genuine and Sid was already preoccupied with his long distance relationship. So we basically have two pairs of people who know each other, 2 strangers and Hannah who seems like was not that close to anyone, cause she was not living there. A lot of time was put to showcase all those different people. You have 7 people instead of 5 and in HIMYM it seemed organic - two college buddies, one gets a girlfriend, Barney was very persistant to become their friend and then you have Robin who Ted really wanted to have around, but I would say that the fact that Lily accepted her into the group was the key, otherwise I think Robin wouldn't keep on hanging out with them. In HIMYF it seems unrealistic that these people would hang out more than once, given that their first collective hangout after they met was kinda awkward with Jesse thinking it's a date. Would those people actually meet again in real life?

I was with you right up until the end. I have no problem with a show being cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons if it's not working out. That's not only asking for a time commitment from audiences but a financial one from the studios. Why would they pay for a show thats not working after 2 years than a newer show that might work better? There are plenty of shows I love like Babylon 5, Star Trek: TNG and Arrow that had rough first seasons, but they got it together pretty much for season 2. I think it's fair to give a show a another shot after the first season if the ratings support it but 2 years is a limit I completely agree with.

A spin off needs to be different from the original show. A group of friends in their twenties living in New York trying to navigate work life, their love lives and friendships has been done much better with shows like Friends and the original How I Met Your Mother. Also the original idea of having the show from the point of view of one of the characters 20 years later has been done already. Why would anyone want to watch it again and done poorly? Joey had the same problem after Friends. If you want to do a spin off it needs to be different. Cheers was a successful show so the creators of Fraiser created something different to Cheers. Also the How I Met Your Father characters seemed annoying and the writers were already relying on cameos from the original cast to boost the ratings which isn't a good sign.

When it first came out, that show is the equivalent to a young bird trying to fly for the first time, only to majestically fail, hitting the ground. The 2nd season is much better than the 1st, like the same bird learned from its mistake and trying to learn how to fly properly, gaining a bit more distance than the first time. If only Hulu gave it more time, we would've seen it fly its first few kilometers.

I never watched HIMYF until recently mainly due to the fact that I didn't want to sign up for Hulu. I loved HIMYM and would have given it a chance if they just aired it on TV like HIMYM. That changed for the Futurama revival so I gave both a shot and can honestly say I'm not too disappointed it was canceled, but I'd watch a season 3 if they gave them one last season to wrap up. It's too bad they didn't have a contingency plan like HIMYM, where they were ready to have Victoria be the mother if they got the cancellation notice.

It's weird because I really did like HIMYF more in some ways. You know by the very end of the pilot that one of the following guys is the father, so unlike HIMYM there was a proper end. Also, since there was a final father who was in the cast, you can kinda grow and see potential relationships with Sophie that would lead to her final romance versus HIMYM where they were truly lucky to cast someone who could stand on her own and mesh well with the cast despite only appearing for the final 2 seasons. Also, everyone struggling for money and figuring things out felt a bit relatable given they live in new york. But unfortunately, as you mentioned, it was cancelled before it could flourish. I really wanted to see how it worked out.

While i agree that some shows need to be given more time to develop, the example of himym doesn't fit here at all. It had something special from the very beginning and while keeping it's quality mostly until about season five, the first few episodes are amongst my favorites of the entire show. Picking the Cab scene with Barney as an example for an outdated joke is ridiculous, this was episode 1 (i think) and done to establish the character. Also it was 2005, almost 20 years ago! A lot has changed since then
