Adam Sandler without question is a comedy icon. Movies like Billy Madison, The Waterboy, Happy Gilmore, and The Wedding Singer put Sandler on the map. Though as his career moved forward it became obvious that Adam Sandler was building every movie essentially off the same character type. But audiences didn't care. There have been some less than great Adam Sandler movies, but overall his roles in both comedy and dramatic movies have cemented him as an icon.

Click is my favorite Adam Sandler film. It starts off as a typical funny Sandler comedy but then morphs into a sad heartbreaking drama. The scene where he sees his dad for the last time always makes me tear up. That movie didn't deserve the hate.

I fully agree. I can't believe anyone can hate that movie it isn't only my favourite Sandler movie, but one of my favourite of all time. I'm generally not a huge Sandler fan, but Click was different from most of his other movies and I have a soft spot for father and son/daughter relationships being explored like this and Interstellar (my favourite movie of all time).

I can't rewatch that movie because the existential dread that comes along with it would keep me up at night lol. Really great genre-switch midway through the movie. I'm sure it caught almost everyone off guard.

It's just recommended that you don't spend all the money on hookers and blow because careers like that are usually not going to be multi-decade affairs.

One other thing, in every movie there is a positive message or "moral lesson", it's not just someone acting stupid, there is always a positive message that makes you feel good: "money is not everything", "family first", "be tolerant towards those different to you", "caring for someone instead being selfish", etc.

Something that I always found interesting is that Steve Buscemi, someone I think is not only a great dramatic actor but also director, it's always part of Sandler's posse, only to play the weirdest of human beings conceiveable, and he's there playing the buffoon with Sandler

@@bes03c That's right. Steve is a native Brooklynite and returned to doing volunteer firefighter work in the days after 9/11, helping dig through the rubble searching for survivors. He's one of the nicest celebrities out there.

What's weird though is that this isn't really a bad thing. Adam Sandler's movies between '95 and '05 are a part of American culture. Like you said, Audience tastes changed after that, but man Uncut Gems was good :)

I feel like the fact that Adam Sandler proved that he can be a great dramatic actor in the 21st century was enough to prove that he was never at any point bad at what he did. His brand of humor is what made him a household name, and you could honestly call him a genius for finding a way to profit off of appealing to his audience in the right way. His 90s movies began to grow tiresome over time, and once they did, he shifted to a different genre that he also found success in. That’s enough to forgive all the poor critical reception he received early on.

Grown Ups is still one of my favorite PG-13 comedies of all time. It's so well done and I don't think it deserves any of the predisposed hate just from Adam Sandler being in it

I agree, but probably because I am at that age where your best friends sort of begin to drift apart (we get married, have kids, move, etc). So the idea of us all having a big reunion with our future spouses and kids, seems like a nice thing to look forward. Grownups kind of (at least to me) is more of a looking glass into the future, of something that I hope I can achieve.

I’ll say this, when his films pop up on tv, and they do quite a bit, I sit there and watch them and still laugh… that’s hard to achieve! If you can watch a movie and still be entertained by them years later, that has to say a lot about how Sandler has made his impact on us!

You should have mentioned "Reign Over Me" as one of his dramatic roles. Also, this is how I see "Grown Ups." It was made for the people who aren't from big cities, that didn't grow up around fancy thing, with lots of money, or around the L.A. vibe. I relate so much to it, and I feel like I'm watching my Dad and his friends goof around. Growing up, my Dad and his pals would constantly do over the top things to make us kids laugh. That's what those movies are. Guys from a small town, who are lifelong friends, pal-ing around, being goofballs, and reminding themselves that sometimes it's better to slow down, and enjoy life. It's not a movie for critics. It's a movie for regular people.

Anybody who does has NEVER seen it and only talks negatively about it because of the critic reviews/ numbers. It is a GREAT movie and even though I’m atheist there’s not many Chanukah based movies out there/ or at least that get any level of mainstream recognition whatsoever. It’s one of my top five (at least) Adam Sandler movies.

Ngl, Grown Ups has a special place in my heart. It was shown to me by my older brother (by 15 months) when I had just turned 12, & I could relate most of the characters to family members. It helps that at the time a significant amount of my external family were really close at the time & would go on holidays just like in the movie. What I would give to be back in that time...

Time-travel and regret-filled "Click" is my favorite movie of his. It was the movie that introduced me to his comedy when I was at the age I could understand his comedy. I watched all his older movies and had fun. In the 2010s, I was a teenager and found it a bit cringe, and Uncut Gems was not my cup of tea at the time, but I still find myself going back and watching his movies. Reminds me of a simple era, where man-child was something I saw on TV and not on the streets.

I never thought I would argue this, but I don't think you are giving Sandler enough credit. I think the similarities between his characters are surface level and come down to quarks in Sandler's performance. He plays his characters in his early films with subtle differences. Billy Madison is more childlike as he is in a state of arrested development at the beginning of the movie, Happy Gilmore leans more into Sandler's rage, Bobby Bouche is more timid at the beginning of the film, and so on. To address your comment at the top of the video, because of these subtle character differences, I would have a hard time believing the scene shown would come from any film other than Billy Madison.

Its amazing that he plays the same character in Punch Drunk Love but the world around him is normal and his character is a massive outcast. The bathroom destruction scene and the consequences of it is a great example.

Great video. I grew up on Sandler movies and I love his brand of comedy. But I distinctly remember my first glimpse of his more serious dramatic skills in a 2007 movie called Reign on me. He costarred with Don Cheadle and blew my mind (and my tear ducts). I don’t understand why this movie is never mentioned. It was so good and he was great.

I agree. I enjoy seeing comedic actors step out of line for more dramatic roles. Shows their versatility. Ferrell in Stranger Than Fiction, Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting, Jim Carey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Steve Carell in Foxcatcher, Sacha Baron Cohen in The Trial of the Chicago 7, Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and before Philadelphia, Tom Hanks was really an exclusive comedic actor and after that, he made the switch to become one of the best dramatic actors in history, though he's still able to lean over to his comedic side when required. I also like seeing actors you'd never think of as a badass step into those shoes and break heads, like Bob Odenkirk in Nobody. That movie is insane 😵

It's crazy how Sandler's films seem universally liked and rake in so much, and yet you always of hear "critics" giving it the lowest of the low ratings. I've never personally met anyone who didn't like his movies and yet there's apparently some mysterious entire continent out there devoted to giving him a thumbs down.

When i was a kid Adam Sandler movies were always a delight to watch. His characters , though goofy or silly, were always easy to root for and were heartfelt. His supporting cast always had characters you either felt really good for or despised, and it shows how great Adam is at writing characters. Some of ny favorite adam Sandler movies are The Longest Yard, Eight crazy nights, the waterboy, billy Madison and Big Daddy.

Used to be Happy Gilmore, but then I became a father and rewatched big daddy. I immediately realized how much I personally relate to that movie, and I’m not ashamed to say it made me cry more than once. So now it has to be Big Daddy. But I do still put happy Gilmore and Billy Madison in the top 5, which also includes uncut gems and the criminally under acknowledged The Myorwitz Chronicles (I never connected to punch drunk love). Big shout out though to 50 first dates, Mr. Deeds, and even grown ups as honorable mentions.

Somehow, Click was the first movie to ever make me cry. I was probably just in middle school when I saw it, but it holds a place in my heart for that reason alone....Also, Zohan is a guilty pleasure

Comics are like musicians. They write a set (of songs or jokes) and they play that same set over and over and people love them for it. So when comics move to film, what do they do? Their set, they just play their set until they find their feet as a actor. Going to these different Adam Sandler movies is like going to two shows from the same band. You know they're going to play the songs you've heard before, but you're ok with that because you like it.

I absolutely love the range Adam has displayed over the years while he was still full on committed to the fourteen year old comedy all fellow men children love like me. He’s always been the shit and dare say I put him up with Jim Carey and Robin Williams in depth and breadth. What I really get a kick out of is I believe we’ve yet to see his best but it’s coming. Last but not least the dude has a huge heart and big love for his family, friends and fans. Truly a story of a man who won great admiration, made everyone laugh their ass off and remember our “immaturity” was an endless source of funny and each time wove a message into his stories that was, well damn it was heartwarming. Rock on Adam, bring us some more!!!

As a long time Adam Sandler fan the older I get the more I've come to realized that he always plays an over exaggerated version of himself. By all accounts everybody who’s worked with him loves him. It’s why they keep going back to make more movies with him.

Spanglish is my favorite Sandler movie it’s soooooo good his romantic comedies are really amazing and him drew are a match made in cinematic heaven his catalogue is full of quotables and his ability to sing when needed laugh when wanted and bring emotion when deserved is highly underrated

Waterboy is a movie I watched when I was little didn't remember it I knew it was funny but when I showed it to my little brother that's 7 years younger and his little friend we were all losing it! It's a movie I see once in a while to get a huge laugh! I showed them all the classics not sanders but Farley and spade movies too and they wanted to watch them all now they are 22 23 lol crazy how time flies.

My friends and I would watch his movies over and over in the 90s, and be crying laughing every time. Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer are classics and will remain two of my favorite movies. Tastes were different then they are now for movies, and especially comedies. There is nothing wrong with following a formula if its executed well and is hilarious every time.

Great actor and great guy as well. Hes been able to keep a ton of people consistently employed for 25+ years under his Happy Maddison Productions. In such a cutthroat business where many dont know when there next job will be thats a big deal.

It’s his voice and it worked for nearly 2 decades. Tyler Perry does something similar and flat out says long as it makes money, he has no intentions of deviating from it. Also a fun fact: the unexpected success of Water Boy allowed more budget and time for Big Daddy (all after filming had begun). Hence they were able to really decorate his loft setting, film more scene with Rob Schneider. It was due to water boys success that allowed more focus on a serious project of his

As were most 90’s comedic characters. And as a matter of fact, so we’re most characters in general. Many legends in acting did the same characters constantly. Robert De Niro for example. Not everything has to “subvert expectations” to be good... That being said, Adam Sandler movies always seemed kinda childish and meant for a younger audience. I don’t really enjoy his movies any more, but as a kid they were awesome.

Don’t recall this being mentioned. Years ago I noticed all his character names in this period end in an ‘ee’ sounds. Billy, Happy, Bobby, Robbie, Sonny, Nicky.

He's a very unique personality. He seems the actor who the same people who both love and hate at different times. As for me I hate his obnoxious comedies but like his lovable ones. Yet i pretty much like to love all of his dramatic performances.

I feel like the fact they all the same makes me feel more comfortable. His movies are the type I play to go to sleep or for back ground noice, we find comfort in familiarity

I think I watched a video essay on uncut gems once that made the point that Sandler’s movies usually focuses on a “man-child” that through the course of the movie chooses to “mature,” giving his characters a happy ending. What’s cool about uncut gems, like I think the point you’re making in your video, is that Howard in uncut gems is the de-evolution of Sandler’s archetype character, a man-child who doubles down and refuses to learn from his mistakes. A character that Sandler spent his whole career playing in numerous movies
