Why You Still Remember Avatar The Last Airbender So Well

Avatar The Last Airbender is without a doubt one of the greatest animated shows of all time and definitely one of Nickelodeon’s best. The best Avatar The Last Airbender episodes are all pieces of animation that go against the grain of what Nick was doing on their network at that time. This was a show that people still talk about today, these characters, Aang, Zuko and the world that surrounded them are still a huge part of todays television conversation and why it got a spinoff like Legend of Korra.
There’s a reason, well reasons, that you still remember Avatar the Last Airbender.

"Great shows grow with you." Most shows cast adult women voice actors to portray children in animation because there is no risk of their voice changing (bc they've already gone through puberty). Dimartino and Konietzo said that they decided to cast children as the voice actors for the main characters because they wanted the show to be genuine to connect with kids. They were okay with the actors' voices changing/maturing over time because the characters would be maturing, too. I think about that detail a lot. It's subtle, but impactful. EDIT: Now you know why Aang was played by a lady in that play in The Ember Island Players episode. The creators were poking fun at that common practice in the industry.
@joliecrusoe387

@Anas Exactly. Zuko never stopped wanting to go back to the Fire Nation. He just thought that he couldn't. It's like taking a recovering drug addict and danging a year's supply of cocaine in front of them. OF COURSE they're going to take it. It would be unrealistic and unsatisfying if they didn't. Zuko is an abused kid. Even abused ADULTS go back to their abusers all the time. Of course a child would go back to his father and sister.

The ending of that episode was very sad for 2 reasons: - The death of Iroh’s son. It gives subtle insight into how Iroh was passed over as the next Fire Lord despite being Ozai’s older brother: He lost his only son & his sole heir in the war, & the death of his son was what stopped Iroh from fighting on behalf of the Fire Nation & why he wanted to turn Zuko onto a better path. - In memory of Mako. Iroh’s voice actor Mako died after Season 2 wrapped up, so that was extra salt on the wound.

Why I remember it so well: Great story. Great characters overall. Great character archs & development of main characters, side characters and even some minor characters. Great art style. Great voice actors. Great messages and values delivered through its many stories within the story. This show managed to deliver a story most of Hollywood's writers today can only dream of accomplishing. Characters you can look up to, as despite of their journey being tough and full of hardships, they succeeded through perseverance, bravery, sacrifice, friendship and love. It elevated young and old, men and women, girls and boys - All had value and everyone could grow and aspire to become better together and learn from each other. It showed how terrible war and tyranny can be, without being overly grotesque or violent, yet sufficently emotional. This show is a treasure, and certainly a lot more can be said about it - Which is why I love it and remember it so well!

@Jake Sangria @pedreiva already said why they're showing up. Though that similar interests thing is also plausible,that's just what it is. As someone who didn’t get to experience it in it’s cultural moment I watched it because there are so many video essays about it and was slightly underwhelmed having come to it after Steven Universe and Netflix’s She-ra, but this really does a good job of expressing why people who grew up with it love it so much. For me, one of the reasons this show is highly regarded is the fact that it does not belittle or limit its audience. There is (probably) a character/there are characters that people can connect to and learn valuable lessons because of it. Kids and Pre-Teens can relate to Aang's playfulness and eventual growth to becoming more responsible, and come to accept realities like suffering and even death. Teens can relate to Sokka's feeling of powerlessness or self doubt, but learn to use their own individual strengths in the end, usually with the help of friends like the Ga-Aang, or with other strong characters like Suki or Master Piandao. They can also connect with Toph or Zuko, in a way that finding yourself, not being bound by what others (like their parents) say, can be a good thing, as long as they have the courage to do so, and that their heart is in the right path. Parents can relate to Katara or Uncle Iroh or many of the parental figures in the show, that effort pays out in the end, that learning from the older generation and teaching the newer generation is more important than personal vendettas, unlike say the Fire Lord's ambition or Hama's vengeance. There are still MANY examples, and I would be here all day just listing half of them, that's just how good this show is.

I gotta say my favorite episode was definitely "The Firebending Masters". We spent two whole seasons building up the fire nation as an evil, ruthless, war driven superpower that rules their youth through lies and propoganda. Then in *1* episode, we are exposed to the true origin of fire bending and that whole idea changes to a misunderstood art that was used for bad when by nature, it was good. Also, are we just going to ignore the Dragon Dance? When the dragons synchronized to it, that was a whole tsunami of surprise and amazement.

I'd talk about Avatar the Last Airbender for centuries if I could because it is the show that taught me what storytelling could do. It could thematically represent the wonders and terrors of humanity, the nuances between culture and identity, how to respect emotions that one may not understand. And beyond that it has taught me that storytelling is a tradition I want to continue so we can have more beautiful, thrilling, everlasting yet ephemeral journeys like we all took with this show. Thank you Nerdstalgic for expanding the conversation and rekindling my gratitude for ATLA.

Common Sense I don’t think any side of politics is without consideration of identity and it is tough to break the mold of what we’ve all been taught. Left or right, up or down, I won’t care about what people say if my voice is supported by those who know and care for me. I’ve got my answers like you’ve got yours, and it’s up to ourselves to pass our own tests. But I certainly understand your thinking that somehow emotions are irrelevant to the “facts” of reality. Avatar: the Last Airbender really is a stroke of genius. Its target audience is mainly 7 - 11 year olds (roughly), but its philosophical symbolisms; adult, mature and well-thought out characters and themes (who puts alluded genocide into a cartoon?); a simple yet effective and entertaining narrative arc and some of the most gorgeously produced animation the likes of which television and media have never seen before. I think the characters are what shine the most. Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Suki, Zuko, Iroh, Azula, Mai, Ty Lee, Roku, Ozai, Long Feng, Gyatso, Jet, Pakku, Bumi, Jeong Jeong, Piandao, Zhao... all these people, major and minor, some better developed than others, have an *impact* on the show. They are what make the show work and what makes it so enjoyable to watch. My favourite moments are when Iroh sings Leaves From the Vine, Aang and Zuko meet the dragons Ran and Shaw, Katara meets the man who killed her mother, Sokka leads the assault on the airship fleet and Aang and Ozai's final battle. Just brilliantly ripe cherries on top of a filling, rich and *satisfying* cake.

That's what I love so much about this show. They have jokes and stuff, and yeah those are great, but what really stuck with me as a kid wasn't the jokes, it was Aang's anger after Appa is stolen, it was Zuko crying as he knelt, looking up at his father who was about to burn and banish him, it was Iroh crying as he sang Leaves from the Vine to his dead son on his birthday, in the city he died trying to conquer at Iroh's command. Most kid shows don't trust their audience to be able to grapple with that stuff, but ATLA did, and that's a huge reason why it is so loved.

Having complex characters on both sides of the conflict was important. Iroh was a great man, but he was fire nation, the "bad guys". And there were many villains on the good side of things, or good people trying to to the right thing the wrong way. The show didn't shy away from grey areas and that was huge.
