There's a piece of comic book trivia that's been going around the internet about how Marvel almost bought DC Comics in the late 1980s, but they canceled the deal because they didn't think Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of DC's pantheon of superheroes were popular enough. How true is that? And what's the whole story behind this strange comic book history? Scott explains...

Fresh in my mind is Film Theory's breakdown of the Wakandan economy's over reliance on a single resource to fuel their economy. He obviously bases his opinions on real world parallels but the point is that he ultimately concludes that the country could stay afloat, or even stand on top for awhile, but eventually the lack of urgent need for innovation or encouragement of any real competition will hinder necessary progress, leading to an eventual downturn. That's where Disney is in this Fox deal, and why it _looks_ so good to so many, for now. They've got the winning formula - for now. They may be the best - for now... but eventually tides will change, or leadership will change, and then agendas will change and that's when the most obvious negatives of their overwhelming power over the industry will lead to a qualitative nosedive. Those who are excited for Disney to take on Fox's beloved franchises might well be right to be excited in the short term, and I'm sure they'll revel in the benefits of the changeover for that time, but in the long term this kind of thing has traditionally led to disaster. It seems a little too appropriate sometimes that Disney's trademark is a castle.

I don't think Disney can have a Monopoly. Because of Viacom & Warner. They own just as much. I'm glad Disney got Fox because the way I see it Fox was trying to take Marvel's property from them they were one step away from calling their movies "Fox's X-Men"

NerdSync Well for once it's not wrong. Also while I haven't read all the Marvel/DC crossover event books I don't believe this would have been a great thing in the long run. Because yes monopolies are bad! It's the same reason why I don't like Disney is buying up almost every single franchise. Try as they might uniformity happens when a corporation takes over too many things and it would have been really weird reading a Justice League book that read like an X-men book. (Especially if Wonder Woman kept dying like Jean) 😥 So why it is a interesting story I am very glad it didn't happened.

I think pop culture would be very different. It's possible that comics in general would have become far less popular if Marvel got a bigger monopoly, which would mean less variety. People could have gotten sick of the same stuff and abandoned comics altogether.

Also Imagine if they tied the justice society to Magneto and the holocaust. After all the jsa were a superhero team active during ww2 who fought against Adolf Hitler just like Captain America and Wolverine so maybe they could easily explain that the jsa did indeed fight during ww2 with them having fought in the European Theatre and having helped liberate a Nazi concentration camp possibly the same concentration camp that Magneto had been sent to. They could still easily keep the fact that Magneto had been in Auschwitz as when the Soviets were pushing back the Nazis realizing that if they got caught by the Soviets and their crimes at Auschwitz were revealed that they would likely be executed by the Soviets out of revenge as unlike the western allies the Soviets were bent on revenge against the Nazis for invading their country and enslaving and attempting to kill them so the Nazis sent most of the surviving Jewish people and other minorities to concentration camps further in Germany such as Buchenwald or Mauthassen or Dachau where many of the Jewish people who hadn’t been killed or starved to death or been exhausted to death were eventually liberated by American soldiers so they could easily explain that Magneto was one of those people who were sent to concentration camps further in Germany such as Dachau, Buchenwald, and Mauthassen and survived long enough to be liberated by the justice society. It could also show what the justice society thought about seeing the horrors that the Nazis had done to innocent people but because they were fighting against Hitler and are shown to not be anti semites they would probably be horrified at what they saw and because they are heroes they would probably be doing all they could to help the survivors. It would also show what Magneto possibly thought about the justice society as although he thought that all humans hated mutants due to his own experiences in the holocaust in one episode in X-men evolution despite being enemies with Wolverine he let him go due to Wolverine having helped liberate and save Magneto from the Nazis and in some Marvel Comics Magneto respects Captain America and thinks of him as the only good human who cares about mutants so maybe they could explain that Magneto respects the justice society and thinks of them as among the very few humans who are actually good as maybe not only had they helped liberate him from the concentration camp but maybe also were kind to him and that Magneto never forgot their kindness towards him. Then Magneto could actually become an ally of the justice society and actually helping them to return the favor. He would actually be somewhat similar to Black Adam in the comics as Black Adam was both a foe of the justice society and even a ally and member of the justice society when he briefly turned over a new leaf so it could happen with Magneto as well. I would also like for the justice society not initially recognizing him due to his helmet but after him being defeated he recognizes the justice society and reveals his identity to them. In the 80s Magneto was like today going through a redemption arc. I would also like for the villains that Magneto and the jsa fought to be the injustice society with all of the former members of the team up to that point in time. I would also think that they would actually keep deaging Batman and Superman as they wanted to keep them young thus like in real life retconning their stories and removing Heleana Wayne aka Huntress from the timeline and they would still unify earth 1 and earth 2 together. However since Wonder Woman was a god who typically doesn’t age they could keep her backstory of having fought in ww2 and having been a member of the justice society and keep Lyta Trevor aka Fury her and Steve Trevor’s daughter thus making her the maternal grandmother of Daniel Hall and having Liberty Belle and Agabil Hunkel aka Red Tornado also having been members of the jsa but other than that I think that they would keep the jsa lineup the same as had been before in comics. Other than that the children and grandchildren of the jsa such as Hector Hall aka Silver Scarab or in this case Hawkman like his father would remain the same and remain canon. However I would also make Kent V Nelson aka Dr Fate be instead of Dr Fates great nephew his and his wife Inzas paternal grandson as since he was old enough to be their great nephew he could also be old enough to be their grandson which we could explain as that after the jsa retired Kent and Inza got married and had a son together possibly named either Sven Nelson after Kent’s father or Kent Nelson Jr and then that son grew up and then had a son of his own who he named Kent V Nelson after his father and then when he got older Kent V Nelson took on his grandparents mantle of Dr Fate to continue their legacy and later joined the jsa and dc comic’s actually planned on having Jay Garrick have a son who would like his father inherit speed abilities and would call himself the silver streak but because Jay Garrick had been appearing in a lot of dc comics in earth 2 for over 2 decades without a child appearing they decided to not do so. However in the recent reboot they introduced Judy Garrick aka Boon who was Jay and Joan’s daughter so I would keep her in this version as well. However I would have him appear in dc comics as well. It could easily explain it by saying that after the jsa retired Jay and Joan got married and had two children named Judy and either John or Josh Garrick in the late 1940s and early 1950s and when they grew up they decided to take on their fathers legacy by becoming superheroes as well and imagine if they became friends with Todd and Jade just like their fathers Jay and Alan are friends. I would however keep Wesley Dodds aka Sandman, Jim Corrigan aka Specter, Charles Mcnider aka Dr Midnite, Johnny Thunder and Thunderbolt, and Terry Solane aka Mr Terrific childless with them being succeeded by either Beth Chapel or Peter Cross aka Dr Midnite, Sandy Hawkins aka Sandman Wesley’s nephew, Cripus Allen as Specter, Michael Holt as Mr Terrific, and Jakeem Thunder and Thunderbolt. I would also keep Jay, Alan, and Ted as members of the jsa along with Dinah Drake aka Black Canary and Agabil Hunkel aka Red Tornado and Liberty Belle and Al Pratt aka Atom as well and I would keep Atom, and Black Canary alive as members of the jsa and I would also keep Rex Tyler aka Hourman and Carter Hall aka Hawkman and Sheyera Saunders Hall aka Hawkgirl and Ted Knight aka Starman and Johnny Thunder and Thunderbolt and Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman alive as well but they would be retired or in wonder woman’s case a member of the justice league. I would keep Specter, Sandman, Dr Midnite, Mr Terrific, and Dr Fate dead as they died in dc comics while the rest of the jsa will remain alive as I would want to see them have a good relationship with their grandchildren and children and I would want Atom to be able to be with his son Grant. I would also Keep Brainwave, Icicle, Fiddler, and Gambler dead as they died in dc comics with the rest of the injustice society remaining alive and with Shade and Molly Mayne aka Harlequin reforming and becoming allies with the justice society and with Harlequin still marrying Alan like she did in the comics. It would also not help that Vandal Savage was a Nazi who helped Adolf Hitler rise to power thus also possibly being another motivation for Magneto to fight the injustice society due to his understandable hate of the Nazis due to his experience in the Holocaust when the Nazis horribly mistreated him and killed his family.

Man, this video took me for a ride. You're a master of suspense Scott. As for your question about culture, DC comics being licensed out would probably lead to all of the 90's comic culture just not happening as it did. Most veteran creators from the time would probably be lost to the limited amount of slots in Marvel's new infrastructure and the amount of the market Marvel would own would mean that even if creators wanted to part with an entire extra universe of characters to leave Marvel Image would not be able to stand on its own two feet. The concept of event comics just wouldn't happen as Crisis On Infinite Earths wouldn't be made to celebrate DC history and Marvel would be strong enough that a marketing stunt like Secret Wars wouldn't be as seductive. Jim Shooter would probably never be fired if those numbers are even close to correct so the very idea of what an Editor-Chief would be different. Comic book movies would probably just not be as popular as they are today if they happen at all because the iconic, game-changing ones(Batman '89, Blade, X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man) were all made in a time of either desperation or cash-ins that wouldn't be needed or capable respectively. X-Men would probably not be pushed as hard so any character that stems from them past the early 90's would either not be made or not be in the zeitgeist due to a lack of spin-off solos and events(so no Cable, Deadpool, X-Factor, Exiles, Age of Apocalypse). I could go on and on but this comment is getting long.

Comic Misconceptions is one of my favorite segments on this channel. I really appreciate your interest and effort to properly inform us. The fact that you don't just give your opinion and/or thoughts but use verifiable sources makes the videos not only interesting but also - and very important, trustworthy. I, as a regular person find funny that someone is sued for being successful... Anyway... I'm glad the deal didn't go through not only because of the great stories that DC produced afterwards but also it would have been an Amalgam Comics sooner than when it happened or with a longer running time. And who Knows how the DC characters would have changed, especially Batman. And something else, probably the comic book and cinematic industries function differently, but would someone ever sue Disney? They own the majority of the successful franchises and studios. When would they be at risk of having a Monopoly? (Even though it's by no means Disney's fault that other studios don't make good enough movies at the level of Disney - Marvel - Pixar - Star Wars)

Hey there Scott and Nerd Sync Team! I'm Marcus, long time watcher first time commenter... that I remember. Great Video! NO DEATH OF SUPERMAN!?!? NO COLLECTION!?!? I started collecting in 1996, but It was the copy of Superman Vol.2 #75, that sparked the 3000+ collection that I have now. I doubt that if the deal went threw, that the events leading up to "The Death of Superman" (i.e. Lois & Clark TV Show causing Superman to be beaten to death! Look up that awesome Trivia!) would have played out that way. Long story short I might not such an avid collector.

so emphatizw on comments... credits given where credits due, great channel, keep the awsome work up, love you video (and miss the podcast a little) and also thanks for the debunked misconceptions i;ll have a video to point to now. and for the impact i think it would havem i agree with your point, that it would have eroded the edge, but in the head i also think that it might just have take slightly longer to get to "those Stories" but that we wouldt have get something similar in the end. so as much as it could have been fun to see Batman with iron-man and thor, i thnk, one, we're better off with competition, and two i think even under marvel direction, the gritty and dark would have arrived had some point, at least to mirror part of the history of the world. but in conclusion happy it didn't went through especially because the Watchmen and the Dark Knight returns are just so good

Jim Shooter actually is a nice guy I met him at a convention a few months ago. Also did you use the history of comic books in the 1980s as a source for this video because I read it for a school project last year and I remember reading about this. Great video as always.👍👍💥

If you did a speedround video, debunking smaller misconceptions ending with a "which one do you want to know more about" call to action would be a brilliant way to get people interested in upcoming videos and come back for more.
