@@robertt9342 unless you prove an antithesis, shows like Superman, Power Rangers, Dragonball to name a few will still continue to be produced exploiting that baser instinct to survive. It does not mean we are lower than animals, but we do have descended from tribes who will protect the community by preparing for survival, in either hunt or warfare. But in contrast to what I previously said, those who have fought in wars, will likely make an effort to discourage their offspring to participate in one.

After watching this, I'm now thinking about how interesting Superman's partnership with Batman is. The one originated as a way to critique technology while the other leans on it so heavily. Idk, it kind of puts their whole relationship of generally mutually supportive while occasionally trying to tear each other apart in a whole new light for me.
@NoJusticeNoPeace
@NoJusticeNoPeace 5 жыл бұрын
I think it goes a little deeper than that. Remember that Siegel and Shuster were Jews, and that Germany had been at the forefront of the drive for industrialization. Henry Ford sold tanks to the Nazis and George W. Bush's grandfather, Prescott Bush, sold oil to the Nazis to run those tanks. Superman was essentially the Golem of Jewish folklore, an unkillable and super-strong creature, brought to life by the Hebrew word Emet imprinted on its forehead, a word which means... "truth." Sound familiar?

He slapped an abusive husband through a wall after leaping in through the window. He threw criminals dozens of feet through the air to land in the back of paddy wagons. He crushed guns and the hands holding them with equal regularity. He walked through gun fire like nothing and threw people around like rag dolls. Criminals used strength and guns to intimidate people and here was a guy that laughed at that. Damn right they were terrified to their souls. He didn't answer to anybody, he went wherever he wanted and no place was safe from him. They couldn't hide from him, they couldn't hurt him and they couldn't outrun him. He was their nightmare.

Fun Fact: Originally, Superman was not supposed to be able to fly (hence the "able to leap tall buildings with a single bound" thing) but at some stage, the publishers said that Superman looked silly when he jumped around everywhere and "can't we just make him fly?" The creators said "sure" and so Superman few instead of leaped from then on. (I probably have some of the details wrong, but the essentials are true)
@TacomasterStudios
@TacomasterStudios Жыл бұрын
It was actually Fleischer Studios, creators of the Superman cartoon series from the 40s, that thought that “leaping” looked silly, and changed it to flight. It then made its way to the comics due to the popularity of the shorts. The shorts are also where his X-ray vision comes from by the way.
@melkiorwiseman5234

Seeing the full context of this story makes the scene in Man of Steel where Clark wrecks a guy's truck because he was a huge jerk to his female coworker make a lot more sense - it just replaces the scene where the guy gets hung up on the power pole with hanging the truck itself around the pole, to further emphasise his strength.

Nice analysis. I knew all this information before but didn't see the connecting thread. Thanks and good job. Eager to see more. It did make me wonder though; in the same way people say smartphones make us dumb, could you say driving automobiles made us move faster and stop looking at the world and consequently more concerned with the goals than the smoke and danger we leave in our wake. Wow, that sounded sad. This video also indirectly brings up the idea of another contradiction: technological advancement is can be both amazingly helpful and mind blowingly terrifing, which brings it full circle to Superman and how people feel about in universe. Man, i love it when videos get me in these trains of thoughts. I am going to stop typing now because this train has way too much track. Thanks guys! As a footnote, Polyanna is another classic tale with an 'evil' automobile.

Never thought about the implications of Superman smashing some cars… and I think about comics a lot! But you make a good argument. Thanks for the infos, as always.

I am ridiculously proud to be related to Scott. However distant that relation might be, I still get to say "My cousin makes awesome KZfaq videos." Hell ya good job bro.

Everybody needs to see this one. It's very timely and timeless. Most if not all of Scott's videos are worthwhile but I think this one really hits the nail on the proverbial head. Where our country has been, where it is at the moment, and where it's going.. warts and all! We should take an objective sober view of it.

I feel like Texas is the perfect example of the mix of American ideals of technological advancement and good ol boy country values.

@@dansonoflightning2277 Just where I live so I understand Texas better than any other state. Why we're like this probably has a lot to do with oil. We grew so fast because of the 30s oil boom and industrialized super quickly, but since it's oil people still kept their good ol' boy ways despite buying mansions in the city. Dallas/Fort Worth is such a confusing mix of country values and big city ways especially.

I always thought it was more as a way to allow for visual strenght measurement back in the day. Everybody knows a human being isn't able to lift a car over his head because of how heavy it is, even if one doesnt exactly know precisely how much. Lifting a car over one's head could give you a good idea of the overall physical prowess this guy has. A car would also be the "smallest heavy object" we contact with on a daily basis. So it would be a close-to-home manner of feeling how strong he is. We never try to lift a building or a ship, but we have certainly tried to lift a car from the back at some point, even if as a joke.

This is a fascinating analysis. I don’t know if Siegel and Shuster intended for that meaning, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it came through subconsciously. This is the sort of stuff I write about at grad school. I love it!

I feel like the fact that the car is green also hints at an antagonist role since early comics used secondary colors for villains and green specifically for poisons/poison themed villains. Like the new technology was seen as poisoning the old way of life
