Tool-assisted speedrun (TAS)
- aims for fastest completion
- warpless
- ONE person controls 2 players
- trades some speed for entertainment
NES Battletoads played by Nesrocks. It's a TAS meaning it was played on an emulator using tools, such as savestates to undo mistakes and slowdown to allow precise input, to overcome human limitations. The objective of a TAS is to show the game pushed to it's limits, without the constraints of human skills and reflexes.
This run has "two players" and does not use warps.
As always, a bug on level 11 prevents player 2 from moving, so he gets a game over for that level. Player 1 plays level 11 alone and player 2 comes back for level 12. This is a bug in Battletoads itself.

This is one of my all-time favorite NES games. When I was younger I mastered the game and could beat it in one sitting, with very few deaths, if any. Took a LOOOOOOOT of practice, though. Now, playing this beast with TWO players is a whole different animal...

I totally mastered this game when I was a little younger. It's hard, but it's doable. One of the keys for me was using Level 2 to stock as many lives as possible, so on subsequent plays I had more of a stockpile to practice. After that it's mostly just memorizing the levels. You also need a control pad that is super tight, like the original NES control pad...there's NO room for mistakes in most of these levels!

and yes... stocking lives up on lvl 2 helps a lot. I beat it using 1 warp and then a 2nd time warpless

este juego era de los mejores que jugué en la NES, solo llegué hasta el 3 nivel me cansé de estrellarme en la nave de carreras, sé que lo de este vídeo lo hace un TAS osea un programa simulador un software, además muchas risas me sacó este juego sobretodo cuando jugábamos dos los gestos de las ranas y las patizas y puñetazos que dan xD.

И таки я пошел в свое время эту сложную игру: предпоследний уровень с догоняющим колесом (11 вроде) - самый сложный и кнопко(нерво)ломательный. 11 lvl - One of the most difficult. 11:07 - best part

ugh ... 11 years ago this Video! ... I remember i had this game for the Genesis ... but for some reason i never was able to beat the last few jumps to the Tower in the last Level. I played the whole game with one life ... and then could not get past that spot, lol. For some reason ... playing it years later on Emulator ... i beat it ... even first try, lol. So much nostalgica.

Oh yes it can be done faster, but there were many moments that I did things a few frames slower to deliver more entertaining moments. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Absolutely agree, and is completely true. As a kid I could only pass this level via a warp. Even now, I still have some timing issues, attempting the tall wall jump with its timing is a challenge not for the faint of heart.

I've added additional information on the movie description, you can check those links. Aside from that, these movies are what we call tool-assisted speedruns. The goal is to keep the game unaltered, but use tools to overcome human limitations. Such tools include savestates and slowing down the game during recording.

It is loaded with modifications to make it easier. Like less spikes, more ramps so you don't need to jump on level 3, slower speed on level 3, less pits... Very different. It also doesn't bug on level 11.

Honestly I'm a bit biased towards Wookie Hole. I've always loved the music in that level and it's so different than any other level in the game. Plus you rack up so many extra lives it's just entertaining. :> After that I'd have to say Karnath's Lair. Definitely a lot of amusement there.

Interesting. The only difference between the US and European one seems to be the bugfix of stage 11, difficulty (aside from hz difference) remains the same. Thanks for clearing that up

Pressing start works like adding a coin and you join whenever the other player passes a level. It costs a continue.

Yes, there are 3 releases: the american one (which is the hardest, and has a bug on level 11), the european (which is similar to the american, has no bug on lvl 11 but runs at 50 fps only), and the japanese version which is the easy version.

The end of level checkpoint is located in the middle of that tunnel. You can hear the familiar sound right after I died. I guess they put it there because the beta testers were scared to go all the way to the end of the tunnel. Also, I skipped some a section there. The correct path is to go up after you get to the left part of the map, then right, then down an elevator that leads to that pit with the final tunnel.

The mega drive version is based on the NES japanese version, which is easier. There are less obstacles on stage 3 for example.

MJ OaS Вот именно это тебя и должно было предупредить, не возможно настолько до пикселя совместить синхронность двух людей, почитай описание, это специальная программа с помощью которой делают подобные записи, с ее помощью можно сохраняться и загружаться покадрово и сделать такую запись. 0:22 тут написано, что игрок 1 и сделано 19000 перезаписей. @skrizhali It is a TAS (tool-assisted speedrun). It plays the game on an emulator to enable precise controls to be input, allowing me to slowly progress through the game, building the gameplay while using savestates to undo the mistakes. You can see several more videos on the tasvideos website.

that's how it is in battletoads. you knock an enemy on the ground, then you run and hit B to hit him on the ground, and it is a "1 hit" kill. It's actually 2 because you had to knock him down.

Most emulators disallow left+right. You might need to go through its options and check "allow left+right".

Nice TAS! I really enjoyed watching this. If you are interested, we have a co-op run (non-emulator) in our channel of the European version, where clinger winger isnt glitched!

There are different versions of the game. This was played on the US version. There is no error.
