Adults didn't game back then like they do today. That might explain why the sales weren't like they are today. Our parents didn't understand gaming and viewed it as a waste of time, worse than watching TV. Parents today are soooo different. My sister and bro-in-law have a gaming room with ridiculous PC setups for THEMSELVES.

@@GamingOffTheGrid , though I grew up with an NES/FDS, an SNES/NSFC , and a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, honestly, the best bang for your buck, as well as the most diverse video game console, is, and will also most likely still be, the Sony PlayStation 2, as it was truly the last gasp of traditional video games and the peek into the future of what was to come.

Great channel and content. Being born in the first week of 1980 my first console and memories were of the Atari 2600. When I finally got an NES, I was blown away by the graphics and gameplay. The music in NES games is also legendary. To this day I still play NES predominantly and have also started collecting for other (all cartridge based) consoles. CRT and original hardware is the only way to fly in my opinion, but I've found an Everdrive to be handy for playing some of the out of reach games and to "try before you buy" other titles. You have a solid list of games here that anyone collecting and playing NES should absolutely get. Recently, I beat Batman and Castlevania after playing them for the first time 30 years ago. I've been working on Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man 3 lately...long live the NES.

@J Dub, et al, your opinion sucks and CRT is an outdated technology that is hard to find, as well as is also harder to repair, with fewer and fewer people, as well as parts, to find for such things. Also, have you all ever tried to lug around a 19 inch color CRT television by yourselves? Yeah, that is pretty heavy, and I now have a 55 inch LCD television and, back in the day, you all literally could not get a television that was equipped with a CRT set up that was that big in the terms for screen size (I think that the maximum CRT television screen size was around 35 or 42 inches), so, unfortunately, you all were stuck with a projection screen television and only recently could projectors even play video games, but not so prior to the 2010s, so playing on an old school projection screen television, yeah, good luck being out of a few thousand dollars simply for a desire to play Super Mario Brothers. I think that I will stick with my 55 inch HD widescreen LCD television, as well as a fatter wallet, a happier back, no paralysis, and no death due to having heavy objects falling on myself, thanks. Oh, and if any of you want to argue with myself on the topic, a. I have actually lived through that era of video games, and b. I also had family that worked for a person that repaired television and electronics, as well as had owned a skating rink/dance hall/arcade, so I kind of speak from experience on the matter.

After my grandfather passed away in 2020 I started helping my grandmother around her house with outdoor chores. One day after a strong storm she wanted me to inspect the attic area to see if there were any signs of wet spots or leaks. When I got up there the first thing that I saw was a grey gun Nintendo box in mint condition. I must have been from '88 or '89. I opened the box and all the bags and instruction books and foam were in there. I already had the Nintendo and Mario/Duck Hunt at home. Ended up with a complete, in box NES. It felt like a last gift from my grandfather and instantly became one of the most cherished pieces in all of my collections.

@@GamingOffTheGrid , agreed, and an Atari was old hat at that point, and the 5200, 7800, and 8-Bit computer honestly were pathetic in comparison to the offerings of Nintendo and Sega, as well as, to lesser extents, Microsoft, Commodore, and NEC. The only Atari system that was good that was not the 2600 was honestly the ST, but Commodore and MS-DOS were beating that console to a pulp, and Nintendo, Sega, and NEC were helping them along, and whoever was better than Atari was snacking on the remnants of the carcass of Atari at that point in its history.

I became a Sega kid in the 90s starting with Genesis, but before that, NES was King! So many great memories with NES playing with family and friends as a kid. My parents never bought me many games, I had WrestleMania, Arch Rivals, Heavy Barrel, Tecmo Bowl, and Mario/Duck, but my cousin had tons of games so would hang at his house when I could. Have a collection of about 40 cib games now, got all the games could never afford back then. After NES went out back then, got a Genesis, then Saturn, then DC and never played much any other Nintendo console, but in the 80s/early 90s, NES was King for me. Great memories. Love the NES.

What I love most about the NES is how most of the games are quick and easy to pick-up-and-play yet very challenging to beat. This makes them great for replayability and it feels so damn good when you finally get good enough to beat a game that you have been trying to beat for years. Modern games tend to be the complete opposite of that in that they are a hassle to pick-up-and-play and take forever to get going yet are easy for pretty much anybody to beat if you just put in the time which is why I’m still often choosing to pop-in a NES game over all of the games on the modern consoles that I own. Oh, and Team Gray, of course.

GRAY! They were all intended to be gray. That was the only option when I got my NES in 1988 at 5 years old. Some law was passed that year saying that toy guns had to be made in flamboyant colors, so it was replaced with the orange one in 1989. I ROLL WITH GRAY! Stay outta my toy box, Washington! Side note, I remember when I first realized I could control the select screen for Duck Hunt by shooting off the screen to switch options and firing at the screen to select. That's at least 35 years ago now and I still remember it.

I remember we got our NES very late in the game (meaning it was impossible to coerce my dad to get us a SNES so soon after). In rural MO we hardly knew anybody else that had a Nintendo, so for the longest time I didn't think of it as a household staple--meaning it's very strange to me now to hear of so many who grew up with one since that wasn't the case in our area. If I recall, the design of the NA NES was to liken it to a VCR to help sell it as more than just a video game console (because of said US crash)--then again, that could have been somebody talking out of their ass and me listening to every toot. Shout out to Lady Laci who hooked us up with the Deluxe set complete with a never-used R.O.B.! Tom here--only ever had the grey zapper BUT the Capt. N. cartoon made me want the orange. My NES trick was the Game Genie--get the game working through that and just don't remove the genie. No need for codes, it just maintained that pin connection for you. BUT, I was so happy to get the top-loader. I DO like the dogbone because it's so similar to the SNES pad, but yeah, still hold that nostalgia for the rectangle. Ugh, the Power Glove really was so bad! But nearly every somebody comes over, they want to put it on. lol SMB2 is my favorite NES Mario. Dude, the soundtrack to NES Batman--it still floors me that the 8-bit toaster was capable of such jams! Do love me some Dr. Mario!

This is the second comment I've seen referring to the good ol' "Game Genie Trick." Very interesting. We had to get creative back then. Ahhh the days before the internet. What developers were able to pull off on the NES is remarkable. Hell, some of the later released damn near look like SNES games. Not quite but really remarkable stuff. Cheers!

I got the action set with Mario/Duck Hunt for Christmas in 87. Funny thing is all my friends got it that Christmas too to the point where it wasn't until early KZfaq that I found out it came out in 86. Had no idea. I don't know which gun I had. I wish I did. My neighbor had the gamepad and we beat the shit out of that thing. My friend a street over had the power glove. We thought it was the coolest thing ever even though it sucked. I had another friend who lived in another town who I'd see over the summer. He was basically a rich kid who got everything who for some reason would only use the Max controller. I still don't understand why, but seeing him beat Megaman 1 with one was impressive. I've got some NES games still. I got rid of most of my games for Genesis games but early 2000s a friend of mine was getting rid of their games and gave me two shoeboxes of loose games for free. All the Mario games, all 3 Ninja Turtles games, Contra, Tetris, Dr. Mario, Solomon's Key and more. I've managed to get box and manuals for 4 of them: All 3 Castlevania games and Legend of Zelda with the map. There's only two games I want: Batman and Mike Tyson's Punchout. There were tons of systems prior to the NES but the NES is the first gaming system where gaming had figured out what works that all game systems afterwards built off of. I don't play modern games and think "This is the logical evolution of the Vectrex." NES is where the gaming of today started.

The orange zapper was created to align with the toy gun safety laws at the time (still to this day). Kids were being shot while brandishing toy guns, so laws were passed to make toy guns have bright orange/red and other bright colors so cops would know not to shoot the kids that were just playing with their toy guns outside. Nintendo will always be my first love. I did have an Atari 2600 but by the time I got one, the NES was released and it was game over for Atari. I didn't have it for more than a month. I think I traded it for a toy or something...

This was actually the third or fourth console I played lol. I'm slightly older than you guys, but I had Atari 2600, that was first system. A Colecovision and A Commodore 64. The last one is technically a PC, but as a kid I only used it for gaming. The Nes though, once I got that I never wanted to go back to those previous consoles. It was mind blowing at the time, and of course the system that brought gaming back after the crash of 83'. Cheers fellas!

Love the perspective. The 2600 is weird for me. Born in '86. I literally never crossed paths with one until like '99. I don't know how that could be possible. It was like no one in my area had one. I even hung out with a lot of older kids. Sucks because I wish I had some nostalgia for that era proceeding the NES. Cheers!

Nice break down guys! I had a NES twice. In college my PS1 broke so I started trawling the pawnshops. I had a huge collection of games for around $80. Honestly though I just play nes on my wiiu now. It's a space concern. That was a good list. I would pick Lifeforce over Gradius and Bionic Commando over Dr. Mario, but Mario 1-3 are some of the best games ever made. With the zapper, I used to go to Walmart as a kid, and there were shelves of fake machine guns. Then a couple of kids got stupid and got shot so they started putting orange tips on all the guns, then phased them out.

Thank you for all that. The NES Max is pretty bad. I'm a little older than you guys (‘77), but while I did play an Atari 2600, the NES was my first obsession. I never had either growing up (cause my parents knew I'd get crazy-addicted), but I played at friends' and cousins'. I didn’t get my own NES until college in 1995, and I donated that box to a children's hospital when I got married in'08. I have since tracked down another NES that I don’t play as much because I have a modded Wii on a CRT or the NES mini or Switch Online. There’s so much choice now. I'm thinking of getting an everdrive so I can go back to original hardware, though.
