I always say video games are video games there to be played and enjoyed and not to sit there to laugh at . yes I collect but i collect to play them and enjoy them . I stopped collecting sale when I got robbed has you may have protection but one day mother nature or some dick will just come by and take or destroy that piece of plastic . enjoy them now and not never

it's so nice to hear someone holds so much power in regards to prices increasing as well as so much power in how much money could be in his pocket right now but still keeps to his ethics and respects the hobby in such a simply admirable and respectful way. God speed Tim haha

I'm not even into collecting, but I absolutely love this. I just love the idea of elitists getting taken down a peg or two and maybe the hobby becoming just a little more accessible for people who do want to collect. The joy Pat and Ian have in this video is pretty god damn infectious, too.
@mattypenta
@mattypenta 7 жыл бұрын
Not at all. I'm against the elitist or profit driven side of it, but fully support collecting for the love of collecting. When people start trying to hold their collections as status symbols against other collectors, make it difficult for other collectors to enjoy the hobby, and try to turn what should be a fun hobby into a money game, it's gross. Those are the only people negatively affected by their collections not being worth as much or the items becoming more common. The people who collect because they simply enjoy collecting won't be affected because they're not doing it to feel superior or make money.
@mattypenta
@mattypenta 7 жыл бұрын
If someone is collecting in a desperate hope that someday it'll pay off then they're misguided. It's that same kind of mentality that nearly killed the comic industry twenty years ago when collecting for future profit got out of control. It's also a foolish gamble because it will almost never pay off the way those people would like for it to. If someone wants to invest money for a future financial gain, they're better off learning their way around the stock market than spending their cash on old video games and video game memorabilia. The rest... I really don't know what you're getting at that couldn't already fall under collecting for the sake of collecting, which I already said I'm completely for. Collecting for the sake of preservation won't be affected by the ridiculous prices dropping or items becoming less rare. In fact, it will directly benefit that cause simply by more items existing and more people being able to get a hold of them. The prices raising and rarity of items only helps to serve the people who are already in a good position to profit/benefit from it at the expense of everyone else.

Video games as commodities. Collectors can do what they want, but I'll never adopt that mentality. Getting mad because your "investment" declined? Your games probably still work, so it's not like your collection is "ruined". You can still play them, right? Ugh. This was never what video games were about. They were never trading cards or porkbellies. They were about being played. If collectors are in it strictly for the money, all power to them-- but the speculation bubble inevitably bursts, and if you don't sell at the right time? That's on you.

+Rinoa Super-Genius This isn't going to help actual gamer's looking to play these games, this is only going to bring down the prices of some sealed games, and some rare games that you probably still won't be able to afford anyway, like Little Samson, or Stadium Events(not that you'd actually want it).
@RinoaL

Joe Snes oh i can afford these games if i really wanted to spend my savings on them, pushing these sealed games out into the market could effect the price of their non-boxed counterparts because it fills a demand.

@euphoria_7477 8 жыл бұрын
+Rinoa Super-Genius Yes, it will fill the demand of a few sealed and rare games. Once they're gone it will be like they never existed. This will only effect the the value of these exact games, and only the ones in sealed condition, not every game ever made on every system. People seem to be reading everything into this situation, except what it's actually going to do. I hope Pat explains what this does, and doesn't mean for the hobby.

Please, try to get him on the podcast, or a in a phone interview, or just have a big e-mail you could read for us. I own a small video game store, and I absolutely love this. Things have been getting way out of hand price wise. I vend at a video game convention every year and last year I was speaking to one of the bigger vendors there. He explained to me he had over 20 copies of Little Samson. I asked him if he was going to sell any this year? He told me that No I won't be because other vendors here are asking too little. This is the type of shit Pat is exactly talking about.

this is where Pat and Ian shine. when they are neck-deep talking about rare games or collecting games or anything about the marketplace for video games. this is their area of expertise, this is what makes the show worth watching and listening to. please don't get out of your depth more than you have to. you guys are great at analyzing things within this very specific field and you do it so so well, that it's a shame when you have to comment or attempt to analyze something for which you are not experts and for which I tend to leave very very disappointed comments. but today is not one of those days. for today you have shown that this is your area, this is your element, its where your expertise resides and I encourage you to embrace it.

The biggest thing that bugs me about this hobby are those who only buy games as an investment and don't even play them. I have no interest in that myself. I only buy games that appeal to me and that I'd want to play often. This is an amazing story, I hope this guy makes a lot of collectors happy when he sells those games and ensure they'll go to a good home.

+Darkstar263 I would have never said this years ago, but you're better off just rocking an everdrive if it's about the games. If you want to actually support Nintendo you can buy the popular stuff on the Wii U or whatever - I do understand it's not the same, but it's better than supporting flippers. Right now most of us are supporting a hobby that's being fueled and hyped by speculators. I've watched kids pay $40 -$60 for ridiculously COMMON SNES and N64 games and it rips my heart out.

Actually I read the thread on NA. Most all the people in the thread are opposite of what pat is saying. Its actually pretty funny. This might put a dent in sealed collecting price for a little while but there are definitely more than 18 people that want those games for a high price. Dont see it affect cart or cib much. Theyll go right back up. His auctions are ending for higher than they are worth lol.

Pat please just keep doing your thing. I collect what I can (which isn't much) and rarely if ever begrudge anyone their collections. However some people are just so arrogant that they deserve to be taken down a peg and I love that Tim Atwood is taking the piss out these "High End Collectors" that want to lord the value of their collections over others. The funniest part of this whole thing is that these people he is going after are forgetting that he is probably not the only person with a sealed collection like this. Hell if somebody owned a game store in the 80s and 90s they could easily have a collection similar or even surpassing Tim's. I would love for some of these people to come out of the wood work and course correct this hobby some. People need a reality check. I love collecting video games, but it is getting harder and harder to interact with many fellow collectors. Way to many people I have met start all conversations with collectors they don't know by stating how many games and systems they have and asking the other person how many they have. If that person doesn't measure the first collector than just seems to dismiss them.

I am enjoying the hell out of this! Tim Atwood is also my new favorite collector. I collect for personal enjoyment; from video games, to obscure computers, to even vinyl and other media catalogs. I whole-fully agree with you Pat: These are hobbies that help the enjoyment and preservation of artifacts within different eras. I likely have many of what you have, but I would happily sign a contract of non-resale with Mr. Atwood if we ever were to do business. Some folks like to collect for some weird value appreciation. Me? I fucking love to play games. I hope that most other classic gamer collectors are the same.

I do hope and wish that with him selling all of those Sealed games would lower the prices of the loose versions, some of those are ridiculously expensive. I just want to rebuild my small collection from my childhood so I can play and enjoy them and share the classic original versions with my kids. I have a Retron 5 and had to buy Super Famicom versions of Mother 2/Earthbound and Illusion of Gaia just so I could enjoy replaying them without paying a ridiculous amount.

Tim Atwood is a hero to many. I hope that he does it and sells the box collection off (and gives away some as well). Hell, I'll be happy if someday I get my collection to 100 or so games. I have a base goal at 70....but if I can get it to 100...I'd be overjoyed. (I am at 37 right now). If he does....he destroys the market for a lot of games and crashes them back down to levels we haven't seen in a good 5-7 years at least...before it got insane with prices. It will make it so that maybe...I can afford to get my collection to 100 games. So that maybe, Ducktales 2 or Chip n' Dale's RR 2 or Gun-Nac.....that these games, which I want lose copies of....so I can play them....maybe they will come down about 50% in value....and give me a chance at this trio. (They are the only rare ones that I honestly want in my collection...but I want them lose because I want to play them...but 200-300 for each right now is way, way, way above any budget I could ever afford to spend on a game. At least if they got back down to the 130-200 range where they were just a few years ago...I might have a chance someday, but right now, it's never going to happen. I am starting to think I might have to suck it up and get a multi-cart from somewhere that has the rare 20 and then another 40-60 or something like that that I can buy someday. (so long as I can pick the ones I want on it in the 40-60, this way...no doubles for the games I already have). But, I'd rather just get the games themselves. But, it's really expensive right now...and it sucks. Hell, it's so expensive right now...that I'm even thinking if the price continues to go up.....I'm going to have to just stop for good at 50 games, and maybe get a homebrew or hack game once in a great while....but that would be it. The other day...was looking on Ebay, just to see what some games were going for. One asshole out there wanted $250 for a lose copy (no manual, no dust cover, no box, nothing else) of The Adventures of Bayou Billy. Now, I like Bayou Billy....but that some assholes think this game is worth anymore than 3-5 bucks, max....is beyond stupid. Just saying, I really hope Tim Atwood takes the sealed market down, because by default...he deflates the prices on lose ones as well some.

I do not know who Tim Atwood is, but I am glad there are more games out on the market. People that complain about spend thousands of dollars on their collections are missing the point of gaming. It is for fun. Games are meant to be played, not put on a shelf and never touched again. You are the one that decided to spend thousands on video games. Now you have to live with your decision.

the prices are insane on games now. went to the flea market today and out of curiosity i asked about a few games or systems. sega genesis with 32x is now $80 with no games.... and why the hell is mario/duckhunt cart 10+ dollars? isnt that one oft he most common games made? also most the sellers even put them in their locked display case like its amazing. i was looking for megaman legends 1 and breath of fire 4 for ps1, kinda sought after games i had from my childhood, cant even imagine what insane prices they would want for those two titles

I understand where you guys are coming from, but at the end of the day, is there really any difference between a guy buying 4 stadium events on ebay, and another guy holding on to 18 of them for almost 30 years? They are both withholding rare games from the market and keeping them out of the hands of other collectors, right?
