Hi, here we have a coffee maker which is not working. It powers on, but no water is pumped through it. I purchased it faulty on eBay, let's see if it can be fixed.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

@Fix it Phil Spoiler Good attempt Phil, but SEES doesn't read correct when upside down. The 'E' is wrong. So it needs to look the same upside down as it does the right way up. For example 'O' looks the same 😁👍👍

After my machine popped out a day as well, I took your vid as an instruction. I replaced the thermal fuse of my machine. Recognized a broken SMD on the plating later. Ordered a new platine (called electronic board), which enabled to switch the machine on again. But the pump refrained to work. Lastly I ordered a new pump as well. Applied it today: Eureka! The machine works again. All in all, almost as expensive as buying a second-hand one, but I learned a hell of stuff... You made that possible. Thanks a million, Vince!

That first thing you took out is a flow meter, that is how it senses how much coffee to pour. It measures how much water went through by spinning the flow blades with a magnet near the hal effect sensor and by counting how many pulses it senses.

@Klippy you are indeed lucky. My wife used to travel a lot especially pre covid and almost every hotel would have a Nespresso machine. When covid restrictions finally ended about 2 years ago, we bought a Essenza Mini (along with 300 pods) for our home. It never worked properly. We googled several sites, tried descaling it, resetting it, pressed every button combination that was mentioned. We called Nespresso, spent more on service than we spent on the new machine but no luck. We made a total of 10 cups of coffee after maybe a grad total of 6-7 hours of trying. Finally the Nespresso machine and 290 pods ended up being gifted to a electronics and plastic recycling center and we swore never to buy ANYTHING from Nespresso ever again.

Good find with the thermal fuse Vince! Also, welcome to the fidgety hand club 😂. The vibratory pump (solenoid valve) are common in a lot of consumer goods such as irons, coffee makers, steamers, and carpet cleaners. I did a video last year (November) on a Hoover carpet cleaner. If interested I tried to explain (to the best of my ability) how those pumps work. Yours is a wee bit different, but should be similar in function.

I wonder if there was a tiny something and/or air that prevented the plunger from closing and the coil started to overheat as the inrush can stay high without the correct travel . I’ve looked a fair few pumps in fog and haze machines and sometimes just stripping the pump and putting it back together clears it. It could have been the tiniest bit of scale or grit, you wouldn’t perhaps notice. Funny you should mention a syringe. Recharging the lines by sucking the glycol fluid through is not pleasant and I got a syringe for this very job.
@HavingFunRepairs
@HavingFunRepairs 3 жыл бұрын
@@epsilonzero77 it's possible and the heat generated in that section, without water assisting to displace it, could have been what cause the thermal fuse to open. You are right, a lot of times a small amount of scale is the problem. However I have come across a few where the resistance of the coil windings was the culprit and a strong enough magnetic field could not be generated to actuate the plunger.

Hi Vince, was busy fixing same, your clip was helpful, I noted that yours was heating up but no working pump. I'd replaced the green printed electronic plate, sadly, it wasn't the cause. I almost bought a new pump and a few fuses but thought, let me test the pump by connecting it directly so not through the machine, but with two wires. It turned out to be working. I then realised since my thermoblock did not get hot at all, that it must be broken. Got a new one, and while installing it, I discovered the old one was hard to remove as the thick rubbers (two) one either side of the thermo, had melted to the thermo, I had to drill out the largest hole, and finally got the back cover off, so from that I knew the thermo had become very, very hot. Connected new thermo, tested, and machine worked. Conclusions: 1) if the thermo works but the pump does not, it is highly likely that the pump is damaged in some way, like your one was, with blown fuse 2) If the thermo does not work ''the pump will not switch on'', therefore one should never assume the pump is broken if it has not been tested separately. I bought a few secondhand machines (10 euros each), different ones, online, and was able to exchange some of the parts. Nespresso Essenza Mini uses the same thermoblock and pump as the KRUPS XN110B and other models too.

Hey Vince, after fixing a DeLonghi Magnifica, I can name myself a coffee machine noob XD The white thing you mistook for the pump earlier in the video is a flow meter. You could have opened it by twisting, but there is just a wheel inside with a magnet on top somewhere. You see, the machine has to know how much water has flowed through, so it can stop itself after a given amount of water. This is done by this little flow meter. And yes, it works inductive. Very nice video, I always enjoy watching them. Greetings, Andreas.

I have fixed a few of these , what I did to fix them was to put a rubber washer around the pump intake to make a proper seal ...then you need a squirt bottle or empty water bottle (whatever fits better) with your bottle filled with (distilled water) place over the pump intake with the rubber washer seal.....then turn on the machine and select and start your shot whilst squeeze your bottle into the pump intake at the same time. Once the machine starts taking on water stop , refill water bin and run a few shots to test.

Nice. Just for ref, anything subject to vibration gets crimped electrical joints and not soldered. This mainly why that thermal fuse was crimped in. It is also why car electrics use crimp connectors, as solder joints break with vibration. A good crimp or wire wrap connection is just as good as soldering believe it or not.

There are now solid state temperature switch which can act like a thermal fuse except that when the temperature goes back to normal, continuity is re-established. With a thermal fuse, once temperature exceeds the specs, continuity is cut off and one has to replace it. I had an old rice cooker which "eats" thermal fuses until I replaced it with a temperature switch. They are about the same size.

Good video vince. I have one of these and if it ever stops running I'll know why. I was surprised you didn't recognise that as a fuse at first sight, I would have thought you'd be able to spot a fuse a mile off! I suppose they do come in various shapes/sizes. You'll usually find these kind of thermal fuses around simple heating elements though., its a cheap way to do thermal protection without needing sensors. Shame as you say though, many of these have likely ended up in landfill all because of a little fuse! P.s I would have done the exact same thing soldering the fuse 😂 good job you bought spares!

I remember roughly 20 years ago Guinness finally came across the Atlantic to the United States there was big fanfare on TV how wonderful Guinness is with American news reporters going to English taverns and pubs who sold guinness asking brits how great guinness was and nothing but praise. My dad who’d been to Britain warned me that Guinness was terrible and how men would force a smile while drinking it making a sour face. I tried it and promptly poured it into the yard where the grass turned yellow and died. Note that Guinness has really taken off in the US since and many Americans love it. I myself do like guinness after I’ve already become drunk it goes down like water but does leave a nice taste on the drunken tongue. I mentioned this because I was thinking the same thing about the stout bitter beer as the first cup of coffee and you mentioned it.

These pumps are fairily ingenious. They work like a classic "ding-dong" door bell. A electro-magnetic coil gets active because of electricity applied to it. It then pushes the metal cylinder away. The spring pushes it back. So you have a forth and back swing which allows to pump the water.

Nice repair, you could use some needle nose pliers on the leads to draw away the heat while soldering the thermal fuse, Thermal fuses has a life span the repeated cycling kills the fuse after sometime

99 percent of the thermal fuses i have worked with, are all crimped, and never soldered as solder can melt and drip onto other components or circuit board and short out ... maybe not in your case but certainly when dealing with bare electrical heating elements .. so do bare this in mind in the future ... nice one vince ...

You spend ages trying to get into it. You have to take it apart slowly and carefully incase you ruin it. Then its all so complicated once you get inside and see all the things you are familiar with but they don't seem to fit together like you are used to, give it a good fiddle, blow in some holes, suck in other places, work out the best way to get your movement detected, then when you think you are done work out how to get it all back together give it a good run and you end up with a YEEEESSSSSSSS. Reminds me of something cant think what ;-)

I stand in solidarity with the Bugle Union Local 778. I tend to have your videos on in the background and when I heard the shoutout to the MMV massive without the sound I looked up and the writing totally got a laugh :-)

I have LOR capsules and I love it. I pay abou R$1,35 per capsule. Which is around £0.18 for a decent espresso. If I go to a coffee shop I pay three times as much for a crappy one.
