In this video we teach you how to wire a Nest Thermostat with a Heat Pump. The Nest Thermostat works great with a Heat Pump set up but it's important to understand the Heat Pump wiring diagram for the Nest Thermostat.
Wiring a Nest for Heat Pump operation is different than wiring a standard HVAC system. Heat pumps operate differently than standard HVAC system with a furnace and air conditioner.
Heat pumps use a reversing valve to change the direction of flow of heat through your heat pump system. Because of this it's important to know what wires go where for your heat pump.

Thank you! I was freaking out a little setting up a nest in my new house because previously I had a very simple system and now I have dual heat and I kept seeing all the warnings about how I could mess up my system. I understand that I’m not a pro and I still could mess it up but these are the same exact wires that I have available to me other than the emergency heat asterisk one. I didn’t necessarily need this video to set it up (already had it done just wanted to double check) but I don’t like setting something like this up without knowing what the wires mean so I really appreciate it.

Thank you! Your video saved the day for me as I was installing Nest Learning thermostat for my heat pump HVAC system in Pflugerville, TX. Your graphic with red outlines was the clincher as I had 7 wires. There were no wiring diagrams provided by Nest engineers, which is so basic for HVAC system variations. Great video and very much appreciate your knowledge and teaching abilities.

I have watched two of your videos. You are very good. And, I finally picked up how thermostats manage to work without a common wire.. they steel a little current through the other circuits but do not sink enough to turn them on. That explains it.

Excellent video. I have a White-Rodgers 1F92-71. I have 6 wires but I also have jumper wires. Nest online says I don't need jumpers and it appears the Nest thermostat does not allow enough space for more than one wire at the terminals. I'm glad you mentioned the software programming of the Nest. Great video!

This video made my day, after 3 different visits from 3 Professional HVAC they couldn't figure this out. Not too mention the $150 dollars they charged me each time. They would either get my heat pump only producing heat or only cooling. They never connected the reversing valve wire from the control board to the thermostat as the wire is spliced in the middle. I did this myself after confirming and chasing down the wires. I noticed they were both not connected on either end. After watching this video I was able to understand what each wire did and then relate it to my issue.

This was a huge help. Double checked what Google sent me and they had me wiring my heat pump up like a dual fuel setup. This was confusing to me as I have no gas lines going to the house at all. Not entirely their fault as whoever installed the system originally ran the Aux heat as a white wire plugged into a W1 terminal and a black wire plugged into terminal with 2 labels W2/X2 which has to be emergency heat.

Just wanted to add a bit of info about heat pumps: Auxilary heat also engages when the heat pump enters "defrost mode" which, (much like a freezer) occurs when the "evaporator" (outdoor coil in this case) ices over tripping the sensor which causes the reversing valve to disengage, turning the system back into an "air conditioner". This causes cold air to blow inside the house. (ya, in heat mode!) So to offset the temperature split, the electric heat strips engage simultaneously until the defrost cycle completes, and the system returns to normal "heat pump" operation (extremely inefficient way to do your heat).

Hello. I think this comment helps with my issue. I have a heat pump that is tuning off before getting to the set point temperature and starts blowing cold air inside in heat mode. I think is because I connected the aux heat (w2) but I don't have the auxilary electric strip ( optional accesory). Should I disconnect the W2 cable? Or adjust some setting in the Nest thermostat?
@chicenburger
@chicenburger Жыл бұрын
@@davidportillo6006 Whats the outside air temperature? If the unit is going into defrost because its too cold outside but you dont have an "emergency" electric heat strip, it will blow cold. Although noone should have ever let there be no heat strips unless you live in South Florida, its more likely that the heat strip isnt engaging either because of relay, board, or T-stat.

Thanks for the overview guide. I'm curious if the Nest can be wired to run a gas furnace for auxiliary heat. I'm considering adding a heat pump to my existing heat-only HVAC system and would like to use the furnace when the hear pump would be overtaxed by the exterior temperature (more efficient than the resistive coil). I've also heard of a UK smart device from Homely Energy that will run your heat pump based on current weather conditions and electricity prices. Would be great if that could be combined with a nest for automation.

Thank you! This fixed my problem! I installed a nest e thermostat late last spring. When in cooling mode, my draft inducer fan (for heating) was turning off and on continuously when the air conditioner was running. After what you said about sometimes using the "common" wire, it turns out that I had to connect the blue wire to the "C" terminal and also to the "C" terminal on the furnace circuit board. My old t-stat did not use this wire. The nest e directions did not require me to do this. It solved my issue, no more draft inducer fan running during the cooling mode. THANKS!

Hi there, I have a similar problem but in heat mode and emergency heat option. After that our Nest stopped working with the WiFi is getting bad, looks like it’s trying to connect find a connection even if you want to used just like a thermostat with “Do Not Connect” option and sometimes it’s doing a fast reset that doesn’t works because all the time the Nest never find a signal automatically or manually. Now our Heater is turning On and Off every 1 second when the temperature is close to the set temperature and I need to down the temperature to turning Off, so I believe that our system will damage soon. Do you know what’s going on?

Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for this amazing video. I feel so smart now fixing the heat pump issue myself. I had warm air, but it would not start my unit outside, so I figured it is a heat pump issue. I checked the wires (which I installed initially) and just pressed the OB cable a bit further in, despite being properly in. Nest recognized some changes in wiring and prompted me to change my heating options, among one of them being the heat pump. Cranked up the target temperature and lo and behold , AC unit outside kicked on. My question is, is the heat pump heating option going to be less expensive then without. Since I had heat already without using the pump. Thank you!! I will subscribe to your channel.

Ok, I'm having to replace my nest learning 3rd gen thermostat. I replaced my heat pump about 6 months ago which has the heating coils in the blower area where if the heat pump goes into cooling mode while in "heat" to unfreeze the outside coils but delivers some luke warm air to the home during the process. Is this something the heat pump does on its own or is it something I need to deal with in wiring the thermostat? In the Nest instructions online it talks about "If your system is a heat pump with an additional heat wire". Would the heating coils be considered "an additional heat wire"?

Would it be right to disconnect W1 and tie the wire from the boiler control board to W2? On the other hand, he wants to have an emergency T-stat to turn on the heat from the heat pump. Can we do it through the main T-stat using emergency contact? Or it should be a different decision?

I made the mistake of installing a Google Nest thermostat on a 110 degree Saturday afternoon. The old thermostat had a white wire going into a W1(O/B) position. I carelessly put this wire in the Nest's W1 position. The system started blowing hot air instead of cool air. The outside box was blowing cool air and I noticed that it said it was a heat pump. Another site said there could be a problem if we had a heat pump system. Upon further inspection, I saw that the label said "O/B". I switched the white wire into the O/B position and now the system in blowing cool air. Thank you very much!

Have a furnace for heat and a heat pump for cooling. I only want to use the heat pump for cooling, not heating as the furnace is more efficient. Curious to know how you would wire this setup

Love your videos, thanks. I have a heat pump but my old wiring has two bridges, one from Rc to Rh and one from W to Y. I have the white wire going directly to Y before bridging to W and other than that I only have the orange wire going to O. So I am not sure how to reconfigure these bridges to the Nest?

Hi, I have the exact same issue. Old system bridged Y to W. I tried connecting the Y only (and O, G, and Rh) on the Nest but only cooling works, not heat. Any suggestions much appreciated!

My current setup is a Lennox thermostat, and it has a wire going to W1. I’m assuming that that W1 goes to the * on Nest? Thanks for the video! Lots of help.

Question, With a heat pump and a nest. On my air handler circuit board I have a W1 and W2 input. Currently I have them connected together to the W2 from the nest??? Correct? Heat pump operation work correctly at this time.

This is awesome! Only one question- if I have emergency heat and I had two O/B wires (not the common wire), which one goes to the star and which goes to O/B

My system is different in that the house builder installed a heat pump (I guess for marketing purposes) AND a 95% efficient natural gas furnace. So in my case I do not ever want the heat pump to run (I wish it weren't there). My Emergency heat is actually cheaper to run than the heat pump. I am trying to decide should I connect the O/B or not?

Just had heat pump and air handler updated. Wanted to update thermostat as well. Only problem only 4 wires. They are currently using the the fan wire for the reversing valve. Suggestions on haw to fix?

You could fish new wires to the thermostat. Or if running wires would be a big project you could relocate the thermostat next to the HVAC system where it would be easier to run new wires. Since most of the time you could control the thermostat: amzn.to/3omfvmu from the phone or with Alexa. You can also install Nest thermostat temperature sensors: amzn.to/37sSpEC so that you dial in the heating and cooling to the location your existing thermostat was located or to hold the setpoint for another part of your home.
