In this video we teach you how to fix Nest Thermostat low battery issues and Nest Thermostat low power issues. There are several things that could cause your Nest Thermostat to have a low battery. Typically Nest low batteries are caused by your HVAC system not putting out enough power, or by an issue with your HVAC system that has cut off the power supply to the Nest Thermostat. A Nest low power issue can also be caused if your Nest has sat in the box for an extended period of time.

To fix Nest Low battery or Nest Low Power issues there are a few common ways to fix the low power issue.
1. The easiest method to fix a nest low power issue is to try charging the Nest using the built in charging port on the back side of the Nest. This will typically work for a Nest Thermostat that has sat in a box to long or the power to your HVAC system has been turned off for an extended period of time.
2. If charging the Nest doesn't work you can then connect a common wire to your HVAC system. Some thermostat wires will have an extra wire run with the thermostat wire that you can connect to the C terminal on the HVAC system and the C terminal on the Nest Thermostat. If you don't have an extra wire you with the thermostat wiring you can add another wire connected from the C terminal on the HVAC system to the Nest Thermostat.
3. If adding a common wire doesn't work your HVAC system is either not compatible or is not putting out enough power to power the Nest Thermostat and a common wire transformer might be needed.

The Nest is disgraceful trash. Even when functioning, the UI and "learning" is brain-dead and incompetent. Even worse, it's an entire computing device that you're supposed to THROW AWAY WHEN THE BATTERY DIES. Unfuckingbelievable. I have a powered (C-wire) thermostat connection, and I had to trash the Nest because the battery died and the aftermarket batteries all have hideous reviews.

Most easiest video I've found to follow for the Nest thermostats. Much clearer than trying to get results from the Nest help line, I did the settings check and found these readings...6.5 and 40I , indicating as you said the battery(s) were low. I did find a USB charger that had the correct end on it and the batteries are charging as I type. let them run for an hour or two and see if that fixes the immediate problem. Thanks for the great video...a grateful friend.... Don

We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version kzfaq.infoUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

I was having problems through the app while away. The temps have been from low 20’s to single digits (and even a few minus degree days) so I decided to stay with my bf and save my fuel. I check my Nest app regularly when I’m not home to make sure everything is ok @ home. Several times I’ve had one (of 2) thermostats show “offline” in the app. Researched the issue & determined that it was likely a low battery. Thanks for the well done video explanation on how to charge the existing battery. I almost bought a new one on Amazon! Good thing I read reviews & one person said better off recharging rather than replacing. I would have taken my unit apart trying to figure this out. THANK YOU 🙏🏻

Great detail. Our AC unit was being replaced. Amazing how fast the power drains on the nest. Low battery would not recharge on its own on the wall after power was off for half the day. I pulled it off the wall and charged it with USB for and hour and put it back and it connected to everything and worked fine afterword.

Having the same issue… power outage triggered both Nest thermostats to start having battery issue. I can charge via phone cable and that will work for a few hours, then the battery dies again. These worked together fine for 5 years and all the sudden BOTH stop working at the exact same time. Idk what the issue is. Voltage and Lin seem fine.

Excellent video, as are your other ones! Thank you. For me when installing transformer, it only worked when I combined one of the wires from the transformer in/into the terminal with the existing Rh wire, and of course the other transformer wire into the C terminal. This video single handedly helped me fix my mother's Nest Learning 2nd gen thermostat when nothing in Google's Nest Troubleshooting site, Nest ProTech Diag pdf, Nest Community forums, or any other Google Search return could. The Event: Heating for past few winter months (NO A/C usage since October 2022). Beautiful day in East Texas, mom turns Nest "Off". Next day, 80°F+ and 95% humidity, mom turns on A/C, and leaves to run a few errands. On arrival home she realizes that it's 78°F in the house. Air Handler blowing air, air not cooled. She calls me, the dutiful son. Nest Learning 2nd Gen display in error mode with message E30 - "No Power Detected for Y1 wire". Y1 is the Air Condenser unit outside of home. In Tech Info menu, it also says that "WiFi Disconnected". Can't get out of error mode other than to view "Wiring Diagram" and the various "Tech Info" submenus. I remove display unit to check wiring, all are fully seated. Wires are Y1 (A/C Condenser), G (Ground), Rc (Cooling Power), W1 (Furnace/Air Handler), Rh (Heating Power). I go outside and manually inspect A/C and it's independent breaker, not on breaker good, flip breaker, still nothing. Go inside reinstall display unit, same message error mode, can't get out of error mode. Left. Today the A/C came on by itself and started blowing cold air. No more error mode. Settings display "No Wifi Connected" and several functions auto disabled. Removed display unit and then it showed "low battery". I think the turning the nest "Off" for a full day drained the battery enough that it just couldn't function and was drawing it's power from the Y1 A/C or W1 Heater, but since we were trying to run the A/C and not the heater it couldn't charge itself to switch the A/C on and since we have no C wire it can't charge itself when neither HVAC systems are running maybe?

The room is rarely used, so I’ve had the system in that room set to OFF. Your advice to connect the Nest to a charger while it's off the base was excellent! It's charging right now. I'm troubleshooting why the Nest is dead. I did verify the 24 volts is NOT present at the base. But if I can verify the system works otherwise, then I'll resolve the issue with the 24 volts. How can I determine which generation my Nest is? I think it's Gen II. I want to change the battery simply because the thermostat is more than 5 years old. But, before I buy a new battery, I want to be sure I get the correct one.

I have a 2nd Gen Nest thermostat. In the past I've had intermittent battery issues. We just came out of a 3 day power outage in Texas. When the power finally came on, the thermostat was acting really weird. Most notably, when it called for heat, it would just turn on the fan and never light the burners in the furnace. I re-installed the old thermostat and the system works fine. Problem is with the Nest. Charged it for 24 hours and re-installed it. Now it won't even turn on the blower. Just constantly says "Delayed 3:00". With no C wire, is my battery just shot and can't keep up with the demand even though it says it's at 3.8v?

Our battery was low, however after charging we had an “e74” error...found out drain pan was clogged, shutting the red power wire off. I switched everything back to how it was before when it worked, but the unit still does not turn on. Please help. Thanks!

I bought three Nest E's yesterday on clearance. They are obviously old stock and had to be charged prior to installing/setting up. That said, two work perfect, one when putting it on the base said "remove from base and reattach" I left it over night and now it's dead, no light, no nothig. I currently have it on charge assuming its dead again? Have you encountered this with the "e"?

Occasionally my Nest disconnects from the WiFi because the battery voltage drops. I have an older house designed for the outdated mechanical thermostats so I have the 4 wire system. In the more temperate months when my HVAC system doesn't run much is when I run into this problem the most. Without the common wire the Nest battery only charges when the system is running from my understanding. From the info in this video I could relocate the fan wire on my nest and HVAC system to the common wire to correct this, but wouldn't this prevent me from being able to run the fan by itself (without heat or AC running in conjunction)? If that's the case I would prefer not to use that option. On the other hand, does the battery recharge when you run the fan by itself, or does the heat or AC have to be running for the battery to be recharged? If the battery does recharge running the fan alone, then simply programming the fan to come on for 30 minutes twice a day at strategic times should ensure the battery stays charged. I say strategic times because if I program the fan to run from 4pm-4:30pm and the AC is running during part of that time I wouldn't see 30 minutes of additional charge time on the battery. I'd want to program the fan to run at times when it is unlikely the heat or AC would be running to get the full benefit of this technique.

I have 2 wire boiler system with heat zone manifolds. Think the manifolds take power from nest learning. How to get power without effecting all zones?

Thanks for this video. I'm heating only and am diagnosing an e74 code. Nest shows 3.8 battery voltage and lin mA of 20. I connected rh to w1 and the furnace/fan shuts off after about 6 min pretty consistently then turns back on. Time to look at furnace? Note: It's only about 5 years old.

If it's running and shutting off it typically means that a limit sensor is tripping on the HVAC system. The limit sensors can be tripped because there isn't enough airflow, it's getting too hot or the burners are not preforming as they should. A very simple thing to check is your air filter. If your air filter is clogged it can cause the system to cycle like yours is. There's plenty of other things that it could be but checking the air filter and replacing it is an easy inexpensive place to start that could help you avoid a service call. I'm going to be doing several videos on diagnosing HVAC issues over the next few months so stay tuned for that. In some cases people misdiagnose an HVAC system issue as a smart thermostat issue so I want to help people understand what the difference is and how to so some basic troubleshooting.

It looks like the green wire at the Nest was not actually plugged into the furnace at all. I took the green wire and put on the C terminal along with a red wire at the furnace wiring block. Now my Nest is showing voltage at 3.8+ and my mA went from 20 to 200. Is that ok? And my AC seems to be staying on ok. Thanks.

Where is the link to your furnace video on replace fuse or flame sensors? Can't find it. Also do you have a conversion video of 4 - 5 wires using an adapter?
