Nestle is one of the most disliked companies out there. This video looks into what I believe to be the biggest reasons behind the hatred.

I do want to make it clear that formula is an acceptable and necessary alternative for mothers who can't produce healthy milk or are facing any other issues that make breastfeeding impractical. There's obviously no shame in that. I felt this went without saying, but it seems that some segments may have given the viewer a different impression. As I stated in the video, it's up to the parents to decide what's suitable for their baby in their own particular situation.

When you say things like "As far as undeveloped countries, get it out of there", it really takes away from that point you are trying to make. It also makes you sound racist. A lot of moms get a ton of shame piled on them for using formula when breastfeeding is not an option. My sister in law had her baby early and couldn’t do things through breastfeeding. She is a great mom. What got me to comment was the suggestion baby formula should be eliminated. Responsible use it works fine and kids grow up fine. Some countries have high mortality rates for the mother during childbirth and formula helps the dad keep the child fed.

I live in the Philippines. Honestly, it took me until my adult years to realize that my country produces coffee and cocoa locally, because all my family ever consumed my entire life was Nescafe coffee and Nestle/foreign made chocolates. For many filipinos, Nescafe 3 in 1's was (still is?) the default idea of "coffee" because they market it so goddamn well. Thankfully things are a bit changing now and local coffee and choco farms is starting to get more business. Seriously, just stop buying Nestle. I first learned the water thing from a comment the president made on his thoughts on water. He genuinely told people water is a privilege and not everyone deserves it. Literally one of the main things people don't want but NEED along with food, air, and shelter. Clothes, reading and writing, these are more of a privilege than water and yet if he could the president of Nestle would happily stockpile all of it and try to sell it back to people saying if you can't afford water (something that almost everyone else makes free) you don't deserve it.

I’m from China, Idk what exactly happened but apparently when I was a baby, people are recommending Nestle’s baby formula for me to my parents because other ones causes brain damage or something. There was like a phase where news covered babies drinking certain baby formula died for whatever reason…something about having their head grown larger, or brain, from the formula. And nestle was supposedly safer because it’s expensive…and expensive means it’s legit. Or something

This was because it was around the time Nestle was exposed for running wide-scale fraud, where they would pay women to pretend to be nurses and convince other women to use formula over breast milk by lying about the benefits. However, the main drawback of formula is that it has none of the ingredients needed to build a healthy immune system. Babies raised solely on formula, thus, have a significantly higher chance of dying or succumbing to disease in early life. This means that, over a long period of time, Nestle's downright evil marketing of their product killed many, many babies, and permanently crippled many more, especially in poorer countries (where they primarily marketed formula in the first place) where most mothers and their children didn't have access to healthcare.

Contrary to some of the comments I've been seeing, I thought it was pretty clear in the video that Company Man was assessing the way Nestle chose to promote its formula, not the use of formula itself. The video said nothing about whether using formula is "right" or "wrong". Nestle making blanket statements that formula is always the better option for everyone with no personal assessment of individual situations or scientific proof, merely for the sake of sales and not health, is sloppy and a good reason not to like the company. If they had our best interest in mind, they would not market this way. It would be nearly the same deal if they sold a bottled breastmilk and said breastfeeding is always the right option for everyone, because that would also be a blanket statement that is purely sales-minded, but that affects the health of children. Each family needs to decide on their own what is right for their child: to breastfeed or to formula feed, and which formula to use if that route is chosen, but Nestle shouldn't be funneling you towards a decision just to line their pockets.

The worst thing about it when it comes to the formula fiasco, is that while it is far from a 1 to 1 with breast milk, it is still very useful. Not every mother is able produce enough milk to feed their child (and before formula was created in the 1800’s, infant mortality due to not getting enough milk was tragically common), to say nothing of the fact it the “breastmilk only” argument ignores infants in foster care or being raised by same sex couples, who might not have the breastfeeding option to begin with. But that’s the thing, it’s best use is as a supplement, not a replacement, which is what makes what nestle did especially evil. If you need formula as a part of your infants care, there’s nothing wrong with that, just listen to your pediatrician as to the best formula option and check the ingredients (because they’re not all are the same quality). Do not just listen to the people selling it, their first priority is maximizing their profit margin and making their shareholders happy.

My niece was born premature and my sister had a lot of difficulty giving milk both naturally and via pump. So her baby had to take formula through a feeding tube her first month of life, then transition to a bottle. We were given a couple free jugs of the formula when they were released and so far has never been part of a recall. My niece is now 1 and as active and smart as any other kid her age. Even though my sister wanted to do it naturally circumstances changed to priority over preference. Fed is best. We never used the Nastle formula but it still bothers me that people dare to shame mothers for feeding their babies no matter which method they choose (even when they have the option to choose)

So I knew about these problems Nestle were involved in and tend to avoid the bigger companies like nestle. My wife naturally fed our daughter but her supply was limited and dried up much sooner then it should have so we had to supplement her food. But we payed way more for the smaller more natural formula’s and did a ton of research to make sure that other mothers had good reviews and there were no problems like nestles. We avoided all major brands especially nestle. I always tell people natural is best but if not an option do your research thoroughly. The internet is easily obtained and free here in America so no excuses for us. The other countries that don’t have our resources are so easily victimized by false generosity it sickens me. Nestle should have been stripped of their business license for such treatment of its costumers.

Another reason why I hate Nestle is that when I was a kid there was this town that was about a 20 minute drive from the town I grew up in. We had a family friend who lived in that town, so we would visit her there often. When we got to that town the air smelled like coffee. I asked my mom once why the air in that town always smelled like coffee. She said it was because there was a Nestle chocolate factory in that town. Nestle was a huge employer in the area. In the 90's they decided to shut down that factory so they could open one in Mexico for cheap labor. The people who were employed there now had no jobs, and that town's economy when down the drain. I try my best not to buy anything made by Nestle because of that.

The hospital where I gave birth did everything they could think of to try to get me to use the formula they were pushing rather than breastfeed. They made me watch formula infomercials while they fed my baby a full bottle of sugar water before they would even let me see her. The nurses also fed me all kinds of scare stories about how my child would ravage my nipples and cause me all kinds of suffering and how I might not be able to even make enough milk to feed her, even though my breasts were leaking like crazy while I waited impatiently for them to give her back to me. I had nobody there to advocate for me so the nurses felt they could push me around. I'm sure they were getting massive kickbacks from the formula company that supplied them with the free samples they insisted I take home with me. This was 30 years ago in Arizona.

I agree that their approach in the develpoing world is horrible, but do think it's an invaluable resource for mothers who otherwise can't breast feed (like if they adopted an infant) and it needs to be readily accessable for all mothers in order for it to have a price tag that keeps it affordable.
@TheVikingbob
@TheVikingbob 2 жыл бұрын
The problem is giving half the story; these countries have rampant malnutrition and environmental contamination which affects the mothers as much as the children. If the water is poison, the mother drinks it to make her own milk if she is healthy enough to nurse at all. If 800,000 die through *resource scarcity* it isn't from using the product. Removing it would kill how many tens of millions instead? Your reductive stance shows the danger of presenting one interpretation of a statistic. Globally 60% of all infants are raised on formula according to the WHO. 60%. 84 MILLION babies. If just 10% of the mothers were incapable of nursing due to poverty or other reasons you killed 8,400,000 children to "save" 800,000 dying because of a LACK of access to baby formula?

In my mind, Nestlé is evil. Each ethics and human rights violation on its own would be a valid reason for this sentiment, but take a step back and look at it as a whole: In almost every single area of their incredibly massive, global business, they're involved in some of the worst problems of mankind in the modern era. They meticulously set up networks of subsidiary corporations to shield themselves from obvious direct contact. There's a case to be made that if you include all of the supply, farming, fishing, transport, etc companies which Nestlé operates worldwide, Nestlé is the largest slave-owning corporation on the globe. No those companies are not Nestle. but if Nestle organized their creation, and are the sole or majority customer, and turns a blind eye to the atrocities committed by them in the name of profits, why are we really drawing a line? They're fishing our oceans to depletion. They're driving the trafficking and ownership of slaves. They're dressing up as doctors to give out free samples of baby formula sized just right to make the mothers reliant on it in areas Nestle know are without a safe way to prepare it. They're taking little to no action to stop. And they're profiting massively off every single step. Why are they evil? They know what they're doing. They know damn well. They've decided profits are more important. That's the epitome of evil.

There are mothers there for some reason or another can't produce milk. There are also still mothers that die when the child is infant! And for situations like that, the formula is brilliant! The problem is that they try to upsell it as being better than breastmilk!
@Omicron716
@Omicron716 2 жыл бұрын
The problem with the baby formula is that Nestle lied about the nutritional benefits, and would bribe poor women into pretending to be nurses and to convince other women to use formula. In the process, it would make women stop naturally producing milk and thus make them completely reliant on formula, which lacks many of the required ingredients for things like development of a healthy immune system for fighting diseases. This, combined with the sheer scale of Nestle's deception, resulted in literal mountains of dead babies. American doesn't hate them because of the bottled water, it's because they industrialized infanticide by dealing formula like it was drugs; Hooking users for free and then making them reliant on their product and then lying about the potential drawbacks. Nestle still does this btw, only now in primarily poorer countries where they're less likely to be prosecuted.

no one said anything about banning baby formula. the dispute is their offensive, shameful, manipulative practices, which involve giving free samples that make people dependent on the product, when breastfeeding is the superior option.

I feel like it should be acknowledged that the baby formula part lacks information on the fact that some parents, especially in developing nations with less medical access can't breast feed due to the fact that there may be diseases that can be transmitted to the child. I think the solution would just be a healthy and free formula.

Not to mention, new moms in underdeveloped countries may not healthy enough for their bodies to reliably produce breast milk. Removing formula altogether just ensures EVRY baby will starve.

No one suggested formula was always bad or that no one in the developing world should ever use. This is about scummy business practices, not about the merits of formula. I hate Nestle with a burning passion, not only because they’re the world’s biggest food company, they make so much bad business decisions especially with water buyouts. Instead of focusing on chocolate which they’re known for, they ruined the Butterfingers and the ice cream brands they bought, they got so much backlash for ruining Butterfinger and other candy bars, they sold off their candy brands some years ago!

these hated company has one thing in common, they're big. therefore has many customer, then obviously has lot people complain, then look as evil corporation. but remember buy other products than nestle doesn't mean you're taking the right choice. other company might have done the same thing, but because they're small company, has less customer, has less complain, then look as okay company (or even good company). keep caution on what you buy, check the ingredients, check the company.

Great video! Yes, formula is still a solid choice for babies, but there’s nothing wrong with admitting that it’s not the best choice for everyone (like some in underdeveloped countries). And as you said in the video, the way Nestle markets their formula in those countries is quite problematic. People seem to be criticizing the video for speaking negatively when it’s really speaking negatively about Nestle and their formula business in particular.

I personally believe that breastfeeding is the best., but sometimes that isn't always an option because a mother might not produce as much milk as the child needs, which was the case for our kids so we had to offset the difference with formula otherwise our kids would have been malnourished.

I am 100% guilty of still buying Deer Park water after the news about the potential “sustainability” concerns of the springs they get the water from…largely because of the quantity, price, and that it doesn’t taste like garbage compared to other brands.
