The lack of understanding and empathy in the comments is stunning. This TV series was essentially the catalyst for Netflix getting big and making a name for their originals. Everyone was talking about it at the time. Acting has never been a stable job, nevertheless, they need to be paid fairly for the work- which makes millions for the execs and makes great TV for us! I hope they can hold out as long as possible. It's now or never to stand up for their rights and pay 💪

@@thestarkster9940 actually we are of the understanding that it is a real job. Because we are of that understanding we seem to understand far more than you and other people with “boo-hoo” mentalities. 1. Those actors sign contracts. They are responsible for the money they do or do not make. To sign a contract and then say “oh wait, i want to be paid more now because this company (show) is making more money than I imagined when I signed my contract” is not really a valid argument or reason to bitch. You signed that contract with the understanding that this is what you will be paid. Thats on the actor! 2. We understand acting is a real job. OITNB is a show filmed in New York. Cost of living is expensive in New York. You can get paid what many believe to be quite a bit and still need a SECOND JOB!!! The fact you all want to whine and pretend its so awful this poor actor has to work a second job, is pathetic. Lets be real for a moment, she may be in 40 something episodes. Thats not even top 30 for the cast of the show. They have to pay the top 30 actors, the crew, production, directors, writers, and more. Netflix also has much more than OITNB to pay. And they do it alllllll from subscription fees! So i have no issue at all with the poor actors having to have second jobs, thats life. If you want Ads on Netflix then keep supporting these whiny ass attitudes. Or, dont complain when Netflix raises their prices while ALSO charging even more if you want ad free content! The level of uneducated takes that go behind people supporting this actors over exaggerated bs is ridiculous!

It will be never and rightfully so. These are such awful takes and reasonings to support an actor crying like a baby. Guess what, MANY Americans work for companies and large corporations where their CEOs and and other Execs bring in quite a hefty sum! But you choose to work there. And if you need to work more at a second job you do it. If those jobs arent paying what you want, then you can leave. You can quit. To feel sorry for an actor who signed a contract and now wants to change that contract is so ridiculously pathetic. Learn how business works and if you arent ok with it, educate yourself and dont sign the contract you are expected to uphold. When Netflix has actors sign a contract you dont see Netflix choosing not to pay those actors when their show is a total flop. The actors have no one to blame but themselves. Sorry, not everyone gets to work their dream job, especially if it doesnt pay you enough to feel valued. Suck it up, you signed up for it!

There's plenty more industries doing worse to good employees who will go unheard and won't have the luxury of a spotlight of news coverage. A deal will be struck and they'll all be back to work is how this ends. My empathy goes to those who actually need it and are not lucky enough to have a voice. Capitalism is the heart of not just this issues but a lot issues that plague modern society. Whether you’re talking about these strikes/exploitation. Or the soulless empty nature of their bad movies and reboots. Animators being overworked via “crunch” times. Outside of the arts, we see the problems with healthcare, education, climate change, social media, mass incarceration, broken criminal justice system, and a lack of collective/communal bonds, and on and on. Capitalism, greed and the profit motive incentivizes unethical domination of your fellow human beings. Putting human lives in competition with one another. All essential and normalized under capitalism. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY. We can make sure everyone gets what they need and that we all can live happy comfortable lives, and we will all be better off for it. I used to be a model/actor in my teens and I landed the male lead in a commercial. I got the equivalent of 2100-2400 dollars for one shooting day. However, I needed to pay for going to castings, callbacks, fittings, phone bills, a prep day (there was some stunt work involved even though I for sure wasn't a stunt man), etc just to get that gig. And I was going to school, worked in a video store and had no financial backing from my family and had rent to pay. Then comes taxes on top of this. And the casting agent was SHOCKED that I wasn't treating it like I got a jackpot. Well because reality is that if you are highly visible in a gig, other clients tend to look the other way in later castings even though you're not a spokesperson for the brand. So sure, flattering to land a gig, but at the same time it won't change your life. And I have no idea how many photo shoots I did basically for free because it kind of looked good on my set card. Friends and family thought it all sounded glamorous and kinda thought that I more or less was set for life, while it actually was hard work, loads of determination, more "no's" than "yes's" and you kinda know that you have an expiration date for certain types of jobs. Fortunately for me, I did make some great friends in this era of my life, but it's not a cake walk.

There needs to be a customers union so we can threaten to cancel our service until the companies begin treating their employees fairly. You want leverage? Imagine Netflix having to deal with their 232.5 million subscribers (or a significant percentage) cancling their subscriptions at once.

Orange is The New Black had such a large cast, if they paid them what they deserved the show wouldn't have existed. That doesn't make it right to not pay them. Everyone deserves a fair wage. When the streaming services end up paying actors and writers more the result will be fewer shows. These shows with have lower budgets and smaller casts, they will be quickly canceled if they don't do well out of the gate. Expect an increase in cheap programing like reality, true crime, and cooking shows. All of this with a price increase dumped onto the consumer who will have less selection and quality to chose from.

I guarantee if we were to get the numbers of show that they offer and of that total how many are performing, I assure you we will see something very wrong. This is about those actors/actresses; who do have to live paycheck to paycheck within the system of the career they've chosen. This ain't about the Brad Pitts of the world; this is about the Civilian #4's of the world.

In my opinion actors should get proper payment for the work they deliver. The producers take the risk on the success or failure of the production. I do wonder if the residuals were introduced in the past as an agreed deduction of payment now with the prospect of receiving more later. As in:" I could pay you your nornal salary now for your work (100%) or we could pay you 60% now as salary but if it is a succes you will probably earn another 60% which ads up to 120%. So the potential of earning more IF the product is a success. If that was the trade-off at the time and you want to keep that model with streamers that is fine to negotiate. But then you accept the risk of living of 60% if you are in unsuccessfull productions for 2 years, for instance. You kind of forfeited the right to complain about having to live of 60% if you chose the model that has this risk element in it Wouldn't you prefer a 100% pay instead? I would.

So, an accountant should only be paid for their work when they’re actively doing accounting, but an actor should be paid each time the show is screened? What about an aircraft engineer? Should they be paid a yearly salary or should they get residuals for each time a passenger boards the plane and takes a flight?
@tonyfan872

Well the difference here is that aircraft engineers work for a company, and they get paid a stable monthly salary from the revenue that their companies make from each ticket. Actors don't usually work for any single studio so their income is almost entirely dependent on their work, usually the one-time paycheck, which apparently isn't enough. So imo it's very reasonable for them to ask for residual or a higher paycheck.

There's problems with many companies under paying and mistreating their employees. Many of them are not in the public eye. It's all very sad but everyone has a choice. If someone is unhappy with the fairness of the employer then they should not take the job or should just have a second job to balance the pay like the majority of people do. Most people want to live comfortably doing their dream job but that is not the reality of most cases. Acting is just another job like any other unless you're a movie star. Not all actors are movie stars just like burger flippers at McDonald's aren't top chefs. You get paid according to your worth to the company because we are all replaceable in their eyes. Most actors are a dime a dozen just like McDonald's employees. There is nothing wrong with having multiple jobs and people who are lucky enough to even get paid to realize their passion should not be b!itching after the fact. Just so you know, not every actor is a mega star or a millionaire. SAG is over 150,000 members. Residuals aren't a thing most Americans have to worry about, but that is what their union negotiated decades ago. Other unions across the country have negotiated many other things that normal hourly workers don't have. So you can't compare them to everyone else. This is what happens when you have a specialized career field and a union. As far as residuals go, it has more to do with an actor's name, image, and likeness being used forever. Normal TV pays these residuals, but the streaming services don't, or they residuals are miniscule. Even if the show is super popular and has millions of views on a service, the residuals are almost nonexistent.

They are hardly on the call sheet, so of course they will need other work during filming. Netflix being called out for this is a little disingenuous. If Netflix’s filming schedule, contingent on its episodic writing, forced actors into contracts that prevented them from taking other acting jobs while they were waiting around, then that’s perhaps the fault of the writers.

Actors want to bish about can't afford this, can't afford that, but at least you're in the industry and getting paid at all for it. What about the people working at restaurants and department stores who have families and bust their ass for minimum wage who are barely getting by and can't afford things like streaming services because buying food is a priority. Boo hoo, have a 2nd job like the rest of us. A lot of people are hurting, not just actors. Why is this the only thing being covered? SMH, grow the hell up.

@@TheShop90sKids I completely agree with you. I was touching on a larger conversation that I'm upset about that's not being covered. But I got to discuss it yesterday further with Kris Carr and another commentator in the comments. I work in the entertainment industry and it is very hard to make a living wage without burning yourself out or having multiple jobs but that's how it goes with several industry types. I just feel horrible for some people that will never see change or have the opportunity to be in the spotlight to fight for fairness. I'm sure I came off a certain way but it's very personal for me. I have my dream job but it's extremely hard to maintain and so many people are going through it. It's a touchy subject and makes me sad. People shouldn't be treated as disposable assets that are so easily replaced.

Because art is amazing and important. Partially makes life worth living. Understanding that we all want these products, then we should make sure they’re paid enough to have a comfortable healthy living situation. And honestly I’m sure a lot of people in the sciences don’t have that either.

@@IamBrixTM Well said!! I took a class in college all about the importance of the arts and it opened my eyes to just how crucial art and entertainment is to society. Sure, making films aren't saving lives like doctors or helping to progress humanity like scientists, but art and entertainment help us to have fun. To dream (Stark Trek inspired the phone btw). And to take a break, live in someone else's story for a few hours before returning to our own. Life would be depressing without all the arts.

@@collettewilson1319 Exactly. It’s kind of a cultural reflection of where the minds of the masses are at in a way. Art is powerful and has influenced and shaped our culture a lot. (For better or for worse considering films like Birth of a Nation.) but also it’s capable of bringing about progress in its own way. It’s partially the reason Entertainment/Hollywood has generally been at the forefront of progressive causes. It’s entertains ideas/themes that we haven’t considered, and challenges norms we take for granted. Art is important in a lot of ways. Whether it’s challenging the status quo norms, or whether it’s just bringing us joy and comfort, which is also important. Unfortunate that people don’t realize how essential it is for human beings.

@@Ralph_Beckman You do not need $120k to live in LA as a single person. There are PLENTY of people making less who are still able to get by with way less money than $120k. Having roommates is normal in big cities like LA or Ny. Like Kris said, many of them are just asking for 40-50k salary, so they can at the very least qualify for basic needs like health care benefits. That is reasonable. What you are describing is a comfortable lifestyle with that salary. Comfortable is not the same as livable.

@@Ralph_Beckman How am I moving the goal post? Who’s saying they want to make 120k, 100k or 80k? This actress certainly didn’t. You are the one picking arbitrary numbers and thinking that these are the numbers these low-key actors are asking for. Kris has said before that most people within the union are asking for a livable wage where they can have basic livable benefits like healthcare. The number she has shared is in the 40-50k range, which is not at all crazy to ask for. More than 80% of these people on strike don’t even qualify for health care benefits. Google defines a living wage as a theoretical income level that allows individuals or families to afford adequate shelter, food, and other basic necessities like health care.

You're missing the point. KG isn't complaining that her salary is low; she's complaining that she doesn't get any residuals / royalties of her work, which is being viewed and aired in perpetuity so there are always new viewers consuming the show repeatedly.
