PLATON has to be one of the most unpretentious , intelligent, quiet & yet brilliant portrait specialists of this last 30 years & to boot he’s an outstanding human being. He’s a purist with a passion for telling the story behind the lens.

He is amazing both as a person and as an artist. Few people are that transparent, clear, and direct. Also, the people that worked on this documentary did a majestic job! I really appreciated the way they balanced out the emotionally dark part of the women's stories in Congo by introducing right after that the warm atmosphere of Platon talking about his family.

His sublime sensitivity to his subjects at the most intimate of moments is an inspiration, not just for its art but for its sheer humanity. It reminds me of the work of the late David Bohm, a Nobel prize-winning quantum physicist who is equally as well known for his philosoophy and deep inquiries into the nature of consciousness, explored through a simple term he called "dialogue." When he explained his concept of dialogue, the simplest summation I've heard, is that to enter into a deep dialogue with another human being you have to show "attention and care." The purpose of dialogue was to get past the baggage that we all bring to conversation and relationships, that comes from our personal history. Bohm wanted to connect with the human being, not that baggage. And his notion of "care" was the essence of how he went about it: he connected with his care for another human being. Platon's work embodies Bohm's notion of dialogue exquisitely.

This statement right here: 36:23 "...Because if I get it wrong, I can actually do great harm." This statement just culminated my respect for Planton and has defined his work ethic for me. How many photo-journalists do you think go to Africa to take photage of African people then end up with portraits of Africa & her people that corrupts the view of non-Africans who's only window into the life of the mother- land is the Frame of the camera they pointed at Africa.

Platon is his art. His images have power and humanity shines under his lens. He works incredibly close up and I was intrigued by his lens choices. Was he using a 50mm distagon and a 120mm or a 150mm perhaps with extension tubes? The power of his documentary work was very moving. Really visionary!
