What made this show so great is that they’re playing real games, it was all choreographed by a master chess player who was the show’s consultant. It added intensity to the chess scenes.

All too often in movies you see a chessboard in a library of some supposed smart guy to hint at his intelligence, and the pieces are all wrong because someone just put them there without knowing anything about chess. I'm glad they did better in this one.

Not master but GM and the former World Champ, Gary Kasparov. He selected the real games for the show played by GM's and IM's. One of the players was the great GM Leonid Stein from Kiev, Ukraine who was 3 times USSR champ back in the 1960's...

Someone was smart enough to realize that if you're going to make a movie about a chess prodigy, all those nerdy chess players are going to watch and know and instantly disrespect you if you screw up. You have to make the sport/activity/profession/etc. the star. The actors are just filler. It's a very hard lesson for the entertainment industry to learn. They usually get it backwards and make the activity the filler and make the actors the stars ("It's all about the drama!")

Isla Johnston is marvellous! And she has to carry the first episode which is such a difficult thing to ask of such a very young actor, and especially considering they asked her to do so much non-verbal acting which child actors aren't exactly the strongest at. They found a real star, I hope she stays in the business.

@Jimserac

I played in chess tournaments in the decade before Fischer won the world championship and it was very much as depicted in the series. Like Beth, I took Russian courses so I could read the Russian chess magazines. It's a miracle i graduated high school because I'd be sitting very attentively in class while the teacher was lecturing but I'd be visualizing chess moves and games in my mind. I stopped playing in my senior year of college in 1970 but played in one last tournament in 1975 at the Harvest Open in Providence, Rhode Island. It was the only tournament in which I won first place (tied with a young mathematician). This series captures it all, the mood of the times, what it was like start playing in tournaments, trying to get up the 50 cents to buy a copy of Chess Life magazine and running to the library to read chess books. The mood, the Weltanschuang, to use a fancy word, what the exuberance and the dreams of the 1960's were all about, it's in that series for any person, sociologist or otherwise, to watch and get some semblance of understanding from where we, of that generation, came.

Personally, this scene reminds me very much of Hou Yifan, who was the second best female chess player in history after Judit Polgar, who also once beat her in a game. She told in one interview that when she was 7 years old, the coach of a major chess club heard about her successes and considered accepting her into the group. In the first class, he wanted to test her skills. He chose his best students and asked her to play a game with each of them. They were all boys and much older than she was. They were between 14 and 16 years old. She was only 7 and the only girl there, but she easily beat everyone. Later, they solved various tasks, practiced difficult endgames such as mate with only knight and bishop. Hou Yifan said that she had never studied chess theory before, but her solutions to these problems were the best of all in the group. After these classes, the owner of the club called her coach and said that he was ready to take her even from tomorrow because he had never seen such a talented chess child before. She later became the youngest female GM ever to win the GM title and broke Judit Polgar's record. She was 14 years old and the youngest GM at the world then, both among girls and boys.

I love her so much. I forget if it says in the show whether or not she has Aspergers or something similar, but I related a ton to her mind, and I feel like she gives some awesome representation to the weird deep thinkers out there. You don't often see women portrayed with this kind of thing, so this show is super refreshing and exhilarating on the mind. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it, Beth is awesome.

It was really a heart breaking scene in the series final episode when she visits orphanage to attend Mr Shaibel funeral and found her wall of fame in the basement. It is the first time in the series when she breakdown in the car.

I've just rewatched the series and just realised if she was adopted earlier and had supportive adoptive parents, she could have become a world champion at a younger age.

True, but if she was adopted too early, she might not have met Mr. Shaible at all.

@@Hailey_Paige_1937 I meant for her to still meet Mr. Shaible, but to be adopted slightly earlier. She was adopted at 15. If she was adopted at 9-10 she would have met Mr.Shaible and still be a chess prodigy.

@@syahidahabidin65 In fact, it would be enough if the guardians at the orphanage enrolled her in some chess club, which would then allow her to participate in tournaments, play with grandmasters and develop her skills. Although she actually became World Champion at a very young age. She was 22 when she won the title, the youngest in chess history. Although, in fact, if she honed her skills with players better than the janitor from the orphanage all the time, she could have achieved this title at the age of 15.

When i was 15, i played over 200 games against a grandmaster, only won once. The practice mixed with his teachings made me pretty much unstoppable, as noone has beaten me since, and im 36 now. This was a good scene, i like it.

Many years ago, when I was a senior in high school, I was asked to help with an elementary school chess club of kids up to 3rd grade I ended up playing simultaneous chess against about 15 or so 6-9 year olds. I was not at all unhappy when they had to go home on the bus. I seem to remember leaving at least one or two losing positions behind.😳

At last, someone who realizes that a story well told is complete. Yes, if this were network tv, there would be sequels to keep the cash rolling in. Sequels with increasingly absurd plots as the writers slowly run out of ideas, and when they're completely out of ideas, there will be another two seasons....
