Netflix Is A Joke

Netflix Is A Joke

4 жыл бұрын

The Asian American population has grown large enough to swing elections, but it remains one of the least politically active groups in the country. Hasan travels to Asian American communities to hear the issues that matter to voters and to sit down with two politicians running to represent them--presidential candidates Andrew Yang and Cory Booker. Hasan also reaches out to more conservative voices in the Asian American community, but gets barred from an event featuring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump.

We've been such a chill country with such passive nature for a majority of our history (there were almost no weapons in the Indus Valley civilization, those guys just cared about really good infrastructure, and a giant pool), I think that we should be able to respect the fact that people may have different opinions, and not call them "deshdrohis", but that's not really what's happening right now....

I’m in the UK, when folks talk about “Asian” here it means someone that’s of Indian, Pakistani, Bengali ... origin. The Chinese, Japanese, Korean ... communities are entirely separate entities. It’s fascinating how the US has a different idea of Asian altogether.

Huh! Fascinating indeed. When you use "Americans", I feel like you're only meaning "Continental United States of Americans". How unfair, ya know? I just feel like people from Paraguay and everywhere else in North America and South America should be included. Anyways, back to your point ...... rather, the hints of brain activity I noticed from that heap of letters and punctuation ......... (???What happened?? What the fuck am I talking about? ....... Ahh, yes ..... back to insulting this fascinated fuck) ...... Dear Ass Clown, When using the term "Asian", it would be fair to say that "Asian people" are from "Asia". If you want to go a bit further with your heaps of letters and punctuation that you refer to as "Thoughts", then try out this gem ..... "Non-Asians" which would include any people that are from places that do not identify as "Being from the continent of Asia". Love, Jacob Harman P.S. Masalmeh Rami, in all seriousness, you are my brother (Or sister ........ remember that I'm an ignorant American so I have no clue) and I love you! I truly do! That being said, I think its important to know what we are all good at ......... and the ..... rest of the stuff in the world. In your case, insulting Continental Americans in some weird attempt to sound P.C. would fall into the "rest of the stuff in the world" category. Talk less, listen more. You will thank me later! Goodbye my sibling ...... and good luck! Wow this insult is getting a bit friendly ........ let me rub some reality on ya ........ Christian? Muslim? Buddhist? Do you pray to Joe Pesci? Whichever one you identify as makes you a fucking asshole. I can't wait to meet you at the Finish Line of Life, so I can laugh at your dumb ass! I will be the one equipped with the "Shit-Eating Grin". Seriously though, your beliefs make you an embarrassment to the entire human race. FIN

@MrMagooo it's the leaders we grew up with, the system we grew up in. In Lebanon there is a confessional sectarian system and they're trying to rise above it so politicians can stop using their religions to make the citizens weak. Previous generations had it simpler, the common enemy was the colonizers but now everybody is allied with their oppressor because they share a religious sect and see them as their form of representation when in reality BJP does not want Muslims and Hindus to be united so they stoke anger fear and xenophobia

@MrMagooo you're right I watched very one sided coverage of Kashmir and India but frankly I have no spoken to someone who speak about it like you, it's very polarized and many people pointing fingers as you see above. You're right Muslims voted for BJP but that does not mean they aren't anti Muslim and that they are exacerbating preexisting rivalries in Hindu majority regions where Muslims face discrimination. How else can you explain the rise in natiolalist sentiments and Islamophobic violence? I understand nobody's hands are clean but Mori and BJP certainly act against the public's faith in each other they would rather spur sectarian tensions.

HenryDavidT So, I don’t think the question is whether or not Yang knows a lot of doctors or if knowing doctors is bad. Like a lot of people are saying, as Asians, it’s common for us to know doctors. A lot of these stereotypes exist because we see them in the asian American community (congrats on your academic achievements, by the way), and when we look at the individual stereotypes as bullet points, they don’t necessarily reflect poorly on us. People are more taking issue with Yang’s rhetoric because he’s saying he is the opposite of Trump because he’s an asian that’s good at math. It gets laughs out of people, but it plays into the “model minority” image Hasan talks about in this. He doesn’t go into extensive detail, but he does mention how the model minority image is problematic. The first reason, which is less exciting but still valid, is that not all Asians are smart and good at math (obviously true and nothing revolutionary). The second reason, which is way more concerning, is that since Asians Americans tend to be more successful (like Hassan’s stat about Indian men) despite our unfortunate history in this country (Chinese exclusion act, alien land owning acts in Cali, Japanese internment, the railroads) it builds a narrative that pits PoC against each other. “Look at the Japanese Americans. We locked them up in WWII, but now they’re going to Stanford and Harvard and make so much money. This country is so great. Why can’t you do that, black people?” Do you see what I mean? I’m not asking anyone to feel bad for me as an Asian American or to cry about it. I’ve been living awesome life, but that’s kind of the point. I get to because systemically there are less barriers than for other minority groups. I think this is often why some of the first people to defend or justify white people are Asians. We play into the narrative because we benefit from it. None of this is to say being Asian American is easier or the same than being white (it’s not). This isn’t me saying Yang is a bad candidate because of this. He doesn’t have my vote personally, but he’s incredibly important in this race and has brought up incredibly relevant issues that aren’t talked about today. And, most importantly, I’m not discrediting any your accomplishments, or any accomplishments by Asian Americans. Being in a top 20 research university is hard, and you definitely worked your ass off and should be proud. But, when we read into these things, rather than dismiss them as political correctness or people getting triggered, we build better understanding of ourselves and our community.

@@Doobomb I am Chinese who don't good at Maths and I don't have a problem with Yang saying this. For the model minority thing, do you think Asian should be less successful to fit the narrative of minority in America in general? I know you don't think so, but what you said sound like you do. What about Jews? Do Jews count as minority or Whites? The main problem is Asian do not speak up politically, so the other can force the model minority image to us, and use us to fit their narrative. I hope what Yang does here can encourage more Asian Americans to engage in politic and shift the stereotype put onto Asian. It is more powerful to just say "don't joke about being Asian".

You are definitely funny, but you’re intelligent and telling us things we need to know! I want to learn about minorities and immigrants and their profound contributions to America! And their political potential. Thank you so much! Modi and Trump were made for each other. But we need inclusion. Not divisiveness. Please keep up your good work. It seems a little easier to understand the world when humor is thrown in. I felt ignorant about the world. Thanks to you, Hasan , I feel just smidge smarter. That feels good. @Ultra Mega Desis are Asians in the UK. East Asians are Asians in the New World. Turks are Asians in Germany. There's probably more. Asian basically means 'other', or 'the people we don't talk to', or 'can't communicate with' or 'who stick to their own kind'. It's basically a term of exclusion, and non specific.
@zhouwu
@zhouwu 4 жыл бұрын
@Alice Rodríguez Desis are called "Asians" in the UK (because India was the jewel of the British crown while it was still an empire, so naturally, due to freer migration within the Commonwealth, Desis became the most prominent "Asian" population in the UK. So in the UK, to this very day, an "Asian" is a "Desi". In the US and the rest of the Commonwealth: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, maybe South Africa, but I'm not so sure, "Asian" tends to refer to "East Asian", and maybe also "South East Asian", because they can't tell us apart. But in Germany, due to their geography, "Asian" tends to refer to Turks, or even Arabs, possibly even other Middle Eastern nations, like Persians and other Iranians, etc. But mainly Turks. So "Asian" is pretty much the most versatile and non specific definition of "other" in most European and other Western countries. Basically, if not Black and not White, then Asian. Which isn't always very helpful.

@Alice Rodríguez Oh dear, the typical American stereotypes: "Ignorant, and proud of it" confirmed, at least, for this person. Is this what people call a "ValGirl"? Japan had solid walls against immigration, still do, but they are lowered significantly. It will come, not fast, but it will come. Mick In what way are his policies being “picked up” by other candidates? His UBI is a back door way to cut welfare and it is funded by a regressive VAT tax. The only thing he has in common with other candidates, except Bernie, is that he backtracked on Medicare for all

Roshan Ailani how is it regressive? You have to spend 120k a year to lose on UBI. You know who’s going to spend $120k a year? Pretty sure not middle class or poor people.
@roy4173
@roy4173 4 жыл бұрын
@@roshana110 VAT is only regressive if not supplemented by UBI. And it can be tweaked so the common middle class citizen rarely sees it. The idea is to tax the production of goods instead of taxing the wealthy directly, the latter of which has massive implement problems demonstrated by other developed nations who all discontinued the wealth tax in favor of the VAT. And if we only tax the production of luxury items, the poor will never see this. It's not regressive because it's doomed to fail (as demonstrated by other nations, it's actually the opposite). It's regressive because the cost is passed down to consumers. If we only limit the VAT to apply to luxury items, the only consumers affected will be those purchasing them i.e. the wealthy. And the vast majority of the cost will be burdened by the companies manufacturing those goods. I don't see you complaining that taxes will go up with Bernie's m4a plan. It's the same concept. Except you're actually not paying more for staple goods. Your defending the current welfare programs is the same as other candidates defending private insurances. It's actually worse since literally nobody likes applying for these things month to month, whereas there are people who do have a good deal with their current insurances. If you think our current welfare plans are so great, i recommend you try and apply for one of them and realize how dehumanizing and time consuming it is to stay on them. In addition, the "no stack" argument is unconvincing when you see that the number of applicants for welfare benefits go down during tax season, which is money that DOES stack with things like food stamps. Nevertheless, people opt to not apply to them anyway because the aid they receive is too meager compared to the time investment needed. So even if UBI stacked with welfare benefits, you'll inevitably see people opt to not apply for them anyway. In other words the argument is an arbitrary one.

Yang's problem analysis is pretty good. His solutions to those problems are just atrocious. A VAT (regressive) tax to fund UBI is nonsensical considering he thinks a UBI is necessary because automation will destroy jobs and funnel money to rich people. ...so the question becomes, we need ubi because of automation, automation benefits the rich, so we tax the working class to pay for the ubi we need because the rich become richer. ...what? He seems like a cool dude tho. Easily my #3 candidate, maybe even #2.
@Delheru
@Delheru 4 жыл бұрын
@@rebirthoflegend4797 I don't think you understand tax optimization very well if you think the VAT wouldn't hit the rich. It's the one tax that you cannot really avoid. And don't say "step on tax avoidance". Sure you can do that with people you know are rich, but you have to drop one of these three on the income/wealth taxing side: 1. International financial transactions (can't give international loans or investments) 2. National sovereignty (US must be able to dictate to other countries) 3. Rule of law (we acknowledge you followed the letter of the law, but we know you are rich and will confiscate some more) Those are all horrible. Yangs plan moves nearly $2 trn to the bottoms 90% of society. From the VAT+Carbo tax+UBI basically everyone outside the top 5% comes out as a winner.
@huyngo1466

@RebirthOfLeGenD I can def see where you’re coming from and I rlly appreciate ur criticisms. Even in Europe the VAT has mixed results. I’m no tax or policy expert, but Andrews proposed VAT tax is a VAT with a higher rate on luxury goods (which would be more effective in recapturing money from the rich who I assume spend much more on) and a lower rate on consumer staples seems to be easier to implement as opposed to an income tax. But who knows what is the best way to go about it, it could flop. But as u pointed out a bit, I think being able to diagnose and recognize a problem comes first, a proposed solution doesn’t have to be the end all be all. Yang has admitted this as well, he’s open to trying things out and pivoting if necessary. I’m Yang gang all the way but I would be able to get behind some of the other non establishment candidates if they were to secure dem nomination. If Yang can’t win, I hope he’ll have a place in somebody’s cabinet!

"Yang's problem analysis is pretty good. His solutions to those problems are just atrocious. A VAT (regressive) tax to fund UBI is nonsensical " Andrew Yang has examined successful methods other major countries have used. The VAT tax is one of them. It is the response to tax evasion rampant in the USA. The VAT tax can be adjusted to only target luxury goods. "....considering he thinks a UBI is necessary because automation will destroy jobs and funnel money to rich people." Your nonsense statement. "...so the question becomes, we need ubi because of automation, automation benefits the rich, so we tax the working class to pay for the ubi we need because the rich become richer." False. The working class is not taxed by UBI (universal basic income). UBI is paid for by the VAT tax and will also be paid for by facebook, google, and other tech companies that profit massively off people's data. ...what? Any close examination of your argument, and it all falls apart. Yang's opponents and detractors don't want to debate on facts or will attempt to twist his platform when he cannot respond, much like rebirthoflegend.......................................................................
