this movie took the quirky, wacky version of the original movie and made her truly psychotic and a ton of fun! I couldn't believe my eyes when they kept the scene where she hammer-throws a girl by the pigtails xD I though netflix would chicken out on that marveloous display of psychotic child cruelty.

While I don't think Emma's portrayal is as terrifying as Pam Ferris', I think it still works in its own way. Her version puts more of an emphasis on Trunchbull basically being an insecure coward who hides behind abusive and controlling behavior. It actually highlights the irony from the stage version of how she calls Miss Honey pathetic for the whole show yet she is truly the pathetic one - while Jenny is strong enough to stand up to her abuser to defend her students, Agatha by comparison is actually weak and chooses to be cruel to children because they are easy targets. Emma's Trunchbull is a great (albeit exaggerated) representation of what bullies are often actually like, insecure people who wear cruelty as a mask to make themselves feel more powerful than they truly are
@lynnmcghee9459
@lynnmcghee9459 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Even in this song she says she doesn’t need happiness or self esteem as long as she follows the rules. Honestly let’s be real Agatha probably had no friends or people who loved her because of her nature. The ONLY time where she got to feel that validation is when she won the hammer throw. To her it must have been such a rush that in that moment so many people loved her simply for being a champion. But now nobody really knows her anymore. She can’t feel that validation anymore. However it’s easy to obtain self validation and be a champion when you competition is school children

I actually disagree with this. This version is much more courageous than any other version of the character we've ever seen, and it kinda messes up the climax and themes of the show. In the finale, the entire point of the chalk writing is that matilda is able to defeat her with her mind, and her powers only serve to enable that. This suits the theme so well because the point of the musical/book/movie is that you can stand up to bullies and stop them without needing to be strong physically. Trunchbull in every other version of the story is like you describe Emma's portrayal, so terrified of the ghost of magnus that she runs away from just the chalk writing, and this serves the theme well. matilda didn't defeat the trunchbull by overpowering her with her magic powers, she defeated her with all the information she gathered over the show. But in this movie, Agatha isn't deterred by the chalk writing, she actually stands her ground, the bravest feat we've ever seen of her (other than apparently killing magnus, which didn't happen onscreen anyways). It definitely shows how she's much braver than the other iterations, and is more than just a bully who makes empty promises, she shows that she can truly back them up. It takes a lot of force on Matilda's part, superpowers, throwing her out of the building, etc to finally defeat her, which really messes up the theme trying to be conveyed by saying "oh you actually just need superpowers and to be super strong to defeat bullies" which is a bad message. Anyways, those are my thoughts, but I just think you may be looking at her wrong. She's more courageous than the version from the stage adaptation, and pretty much every other version.

One of the things I commend this movie for is how they play up how scared Miss Honey is of Trunchbull due to all the abuse she’s taken from her. She’s very much a victim too in this story and it makes the way she stands up to her even more amazing. To the little touches the movie brings, like seeing the terror in the children’s eyes through the panopticon style monitors as they’re forced to sing along to this drilled in anthem with the latin tagline “Children are maggots” (you can even see one older girl wince getting to the latin words “Bambinatum es maggitum”) And then at the end, Stepping onto the table wearing the most ridiculous, loud, and impractical set of boots I have ever seen. Look at these trophies See how my trophies gleam in the sunlight? See how they shine? What do you think it took to become English Hammer Throwing Champion 1959? Do you think in that moment, when my big moment came That I treated the rules with casual disdain? Well? Like hell! As I stepped up to the circle, did I change my plan? Hm? What? As a chalked up my palms, did I wave my hands? I did not! As I started my spin, did I look at the view? Did I drift off and dream for a minute or two? Do you think I faltered or amended my rotation? Do you think I altered my intended elevation? As the hammer took off, did I change my grunt From the grunt I had practiced for many a month? Not a jot! Not a dot did I stray from the plot Not a detail of my throw was adjusted or forgotten Not even when the hammer left my hands And sailed high up, up above the stands Did I let myself go No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no . . . If you want to throw the hammer for your country You have to stay inside the circle all the time And if you want to make the team You don't need happiness or self-esteem You just need to keep your feet inside the line Sing, children. Two, three, four If you want to throw the hammer for your country Bambinatum est magitum You have to stay inside the circle All the time Circulum, maggitum, maggitum And if you want to teach success You don't use sympathy or tenderness Tenderness You have to force the little squits to toe the line! Sing, Jenny! Two, three, four! If you want to throw the hammer for your country Bambinatum! Bambinatum! Gloria Magitum! You have to stay inside the circle all the time Circulum est Deus! Deus! Gloria! I apply just one simple rule To a hammer throwing, life, at school - Life's a ball, so learn to throw it Find the bally line and toe it And always keep your feet inside the line! Now get out

I was liking the movie fine up to this point but when I heard the kids sing the sweet patriotic tune through a garbled 1984-style speaker I was sold

This is actually something of a good philosophy. Although I definitely think you should be humble this does work for some people. It’s basically saying that you should strive to be the greatest and the best person in whatever you do by using discipline, rules, and all of such values in your life.

Lyrics Look at my trophies See how my trophies gleam In the sunlight, see how they shine? What Do you think it took to become English Hammer-Throwing Champion 1959? Do you think in that moment when my big moment came That I treated the rules with casual disdain? Well? Like hell! As I stepped up to the circle, did I change my plan? Hmm? What? As I chalked up to my palms, did I wave my hands? I did not! As I started my spin, did I look at the view? Did I drift off and dream for a minute or two? Do you think I faltered or amended my rotation? Do you think I altered my intended elevation? As the hammer took off, did I change my grunt From the grunt I had practiced for many a month? Not a jot! Not a dot did I stray from the plot! Not a detail of my throw was adjusted or forgotten Not even when the hammer left my hands And sailed high up, up above the stands Did I let myself go? No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no! (She's done it! She is the best!) If you want to throw the hammer for your country You have to stay inside the circle all the time If you want to make a team You don't need happiness or self-esteem You just need to keep your feet inside the line. Sing, children. 2, 3, 4! If you want to throw the hammer for your country Bambinautm est magitum You have to stay inside the circle all the time Circulum magitum magitum And if you want to teach success You don't use sympathy or tenderness Tenderness You have to force the little squits to toe the line. Sing, Jenny! If you want to throw the hammer for your country Bambinautm est magitum You have to stay inside the circle all the time Circulum magitum magitum Circulum est deus! Deus! Gloria! I apply just one simple rule To a hammer-throwing life at school: Life's a ball, so learn to throw it Find the bally line and toe it And always keep your feet inside the line. Now, get out!
