I cried so hard after this movie that I couldn't breathe because I was so, so happy to see this relationship. Two men who weren't a throwaway joke, or a two-line implied romance; they were in love and open about it and it was shown in all the ways it would be with a straight couple. They slept in the same bed, leaned against each other, winked at each other across a dinner table - and then there's this scene, which is absolutely devastating. One homophobic comment in the whole movie and it's shut down like this; every other time they're treated as a normal couple. It broke me, a little, to see how we can be treated as if we're normal on such a big stage.

@whyarepeoplethewaythattheyare

I completely agree with you. The actor's delivery turned what could have been a cringey PDA into a bold, unapologetic, factual declaration of love in its highest form. I don't wish to ever love anybody as much as Joe and Nicolo love each other because we wouldn't have the "advantage" of immortality. When you love someone in that way - so deep and all encompassing - losing them would render you hopeless. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I agree. I normally am not into the cheesy, sappy declarations of love, but when Joe delivered that speech, the way he said it was beautiful and romantic. It wasn't dramatic, but genuine, sincere, unapologetic, and shows just how much Nicky means to him. Joe basically was like "You're damn right I'm in love with this man, got a problem with that?"; it was his version of "fuck you, bigot!" That there is what unconditional love is.

I only thought it wasn't corny because of Don't Ask Don't Tell. I have no understanding of military life or anything in that regard nowadays. But it takes awhile for a stigma to go away you know? But hopefully soon, it should be at least working on unstigmatizing it right? Like gays shouldn't be the underdogs just because they're gay or military aren't anti-gay just because they're military. In movies and in TV shows at least I think we're close to that point right?

Out of this whole speech my favourite part was the way he said "Nicolo, destati", in archaic Italian as I've been informed from comments, which implies many waking ups, across centuries, age of their relationship, how peculiar, or abnormal it is, and how Yusuf, from different cultural background learned language of his lover so he could communicate with him on his native tongue and know him better. All of this is conveyed better through his speech which truely is like Islamic poetry of the time, with flourishing poetic pictures and cadence. Really gorgeous scene! Eventhough, in wrong hands, could've ended up way differently.

Ok, as a gay guy at first I thought it was too cheesy and over dramatic because to be honest when have we ever seen gay romance in such a raw form on screen in a mainstream movie ( except for maybe in Cloud Atlas or CMBYN )? But when you watch it again and see how gently he speaks even to his captors, you realise it is his nature to feel so deeply and passionately. And those last two sentences where his eyes well up when he talks about how his partner’s kiss thrills him even after a millennia had me legit bawling. To have loved that deeply and for so long! This scene could have easily looked corny. But the sincerity in the actor’s eyes really sells it. And the fact that Rucka put it in his contact to have this scene is so heartening! ❤️

This speech is so beautiful and Marwan delivered it with such a soft earnesty that it sounds perfectly natural coming from him, instead of corny and ham-handed as it could have been in a less capable actor’s hands. But I’m also so weak for how soft Joe is at the start of the scene? He’s so single-mindedly focused on making sure Nicky is okay, and the gentleness of his hand brushing his shoulder and his voice when Nicky finally wakes up makes me melt just as much as the grand speech that follows. 🥺💖

It could have easily been corny or cringey--and I have a REAL sensitive secondhand embarrassment meter--but instead it's almost *inspiring* in its defiance. I'm sure I'd be beating a dead horse to talk about how that defiance speaks to the LGBT+ experience throughout history, but for two characters that have very literally lived through most of that history, it's especially powerful. Hell yeah.

the shaky breath after saying “he’s not my boyfriend” always gets me because you can just tell how emotional marwan is while making this speech because in that moment he’s joe. you know when you’re so overwhelmed by a feeling that you physically feel it??? like ur body reacts accordingly and ur overwhelmed emotionally and therefore physically. that’s what that shaky breath means to me. he’s been with one person for almost one thousand years. a person who knows the ins and outs of ur entire self and chooses you above literally anything else in the world. how would you not feel overwhelmed by emotion of pure love and adoration???

If the author wanted to grant humanity, sensitivity and sincerity to the immortal characters in this film, I think he did it successfully with these two. They bring charisma to the movie amidst so much action. I am pleased that the original story of the comic was respected, and that the actors have crafted their characters with the commitment that fans of the book expected. I would like to see how the story continues. It is a good movie, from the start because it generates something in the viewer: some will hate it, others will love it, but they will not remain indifferent.

This was what I have wanted to see for the longest time! I relate to Joe so much; I'm a hopeless romantic myself and such an eloquent declaration of love puts me to shame. And that he uses it to declare his love for Nicky, ("No you little sniveling runt, this man is not my "boyfriend", he means the world to me, he means more to me than you could never hope to understand") and put their homophobic kidnappers in their place all in one gesture. I get the impression that this is hardly the first time that Joe has made such a beautiful declaration of his feelings for Nicky~! And that this is only the abridged version of the speech amazes me! And that Joe and Nicky are effectively the only romance in the movie save for Andy and Quynh and that they're shown to be just like any happy couple (immortality notwithstanding) and are not a cheap joke or one-line reference and that it's central to the plot and they stand up for each other... that means the world to me! And Nicky's response to Joe's speech would be my own response. And their kiss and the petulant protests of stunned soldiers (whom they both massacre in retaliation) is the icing on the cake...! If a strikingly beautiful man like Joe made a big, romantic speech for me, I would be weak in the knees...! Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli are both very striking, but Marwan is beautiful-! I like that a Muslim character is not just depicted as a hopeless romantic as well as a daring hero, but also that he's just like anybody else instead of a demeaning caricature. He's like a number of my friends. And it makes sense historically, since the tradition of courtly love has deep roots in Islam, or at least in Southwest Asia and North Africa. Joe's speech sounds like the love poetry that he would have heard when he came of age.

That was so beautiful, I was in awe. I cried at the passion, love and devotion that was conveyed in not just the words spoken but the delivery of the words. You felt that this man truly loved the other and it had been a love born out of years and years of learning who and what this man was about. They spent years killing and hating each other for it to turn into love, a love that would stand the test of time. What a honor it would be to have someone love you that way and to be allowed to love in return.

“Uh, guys? These two semi-immortal warriors are kissing, making my fragile sense of masculinity quiver. How do we separate them?” “Well, they’ve been able to overcome decades of cultural and devout religious doctrine; their own propaganda-driven hatred for each other’s faith and heritage; countless customs and laws dictating they not be together that way; and no shortage of bigots, zealots, and tyrants willing to commit heinous acts to keep them apart. What else is there to try?” “... have we tried pulling them apart?” “... Jerry, you got-damned genius. Let’s do it.”

This scene hands down the greatest, but you have taken note of the subtly of their love, their jokes, the nod to each other check they ok, Joe spooning Nikkie when they share a room with the others, the softnest of their love, their terror that this will the be the last time they will awake? And killing everyone with their hands tied....cherry. Oppposite personalities, but fit together seamlessly. These are warriors. And I desperately need a movie based on each century they have been together.

Imagine being alive for centuries and having to tolerate the mocking of people who won't live a fraction of your lifetime. To have to justify your love for a person who has shared those centuries with you. Imagine the overwhelming bond and love you would have with someone who has experienced all the things you have. There was absolutely nothing those guards could say that would pierce their relationship.
