Thank you Miriam. This project has been a good legacy of the pandemic for us. I’m not sure if it’s fabulous design or utter laziness but this setup will be hitting the road with precious little change this year. If it ain’t broke done fix it…. We’ll except for those glow plugs, that creak in the suspension, that bit of rust I found etc etc etc 😆 there’s always plenty to fix on an 28 year old machine.

Hey thank you for the comment. Yes it is a tough and well thought out tent. I’m about 3 years in and very happy with it. My main issue has been packing it away in higher winds, I tend to be the only adult around and can easily end up being laughed at by my brats during this scenario. Looking forward to getting through your recent episodes. Would love to do such a trip.

Great to hear Philip. Couple of years have gone by and I still use this setup. Boxes and shelves have their benefit. I do a fair bit of solo camping too (and school runs etc too) and when solo I sleep on the dogs bed under the shelf. The great thing about boxes is I can cook or work out of either side or the tailgate depending on weather. This in turn allows me to park on slopes according to how it’s comfortable to sleep rather than trying to avoid wind at my cooking station when parking. Anyway the setup is secondary to the departure. Get out there and enjoy, that’s the real design that we need to get to 🙌.

Thank you Lukasz, as always I really appreciate your feedback. My side steps took a battering alright, but by jumping on them I pushed them back down, and they were fine. Therefore by my estimation I’m bang on budget, at least until they snap off 😄 You can loose many thousands on gear before you even leave the bumper area as I’m sure you’ve noticed. The rear departure angle is affected by my rack, but at the end of the day if on a rare occasion it catches on an obstacle I can just lift it off by hand. Despite my aspirations of daring do off road, the reality is this will do fine as it is - most likely I won’t need to lift it off at all. Your observation on simplicity is exactly where I was trying to go with it 👍👍

Niamh thank you for watching and especially for taking the time for your feedback. It genuinely means a lot. Sending videos out into the digital unknown can be akin to telling jokes to an empty room. They may be hilarious but you do tend to wonder about that a little more in silence😁. The feedback loop from an audience is much appreciated wherever it is found. The roof top tent will certainly not suit everyone at all. In particular the vehicle being tethered to the camp is a disadvantage for multi day stays in one place, although that’s not what we’ve been doing. Our latest camp was in a little wood occupied by three very curious donkeys, probably the first time I genuinely could use the elevation of the tent for the same reason it is deemed valuable by those who explore the South African homeland of the idea. They have far more valid reasons than donkeys mind you😁

Ideal set up. Especially like the flat section for your canine friend. When it’s your everyday driver all the bits and pieces you can get for the D3 can make it a bit inflexible. Especially things like drawer systems. I’d wonders if the only way to mount a RTT would be a rack but the 4 bars is very neath, and lighter I suspect.
@VISTATREKKER
@VISTATREKKER 2 жыл бұрын
I think if you are using a 2 man tent there is an argument for a roof rack as there is less weight up there and yet still space up there to use, however with a 3 man tent it makes no sense at all to me. The rack is 30kg. They cost a fortune, €1500 or so. To be honest with this 75kg tent alone I still feel the additional roll when its up there. I am very pleased with the bars as a solution. They are extremely light, I paid €80 for the extra set 2nd hand, and they work perfectly well, both for the tent and canoe. Happy trails Stephen!!

@@VISTATREKKER and those D4 long rails are a brilliant idea. Easy enough to pick up surely. That rolling isn’t attractive, especially on the many Irish windy roads 🙈 Minimum is the trick. That drifta fire is a great piece of kit! Happy trails and keep the content coming.

Hi Charles, yes of course. The dog stays where she is in the video which is on the folded down second row right side seat - so behind the driver in our case. Being a lurcher she takes up all the space between the drivers seat back and the front of the ARB fridge in the boot. Her safety harness goes straight onto the forward right side cargo securing point. The two kids sit centre and left seat in row 2. Then both Parents up front. The boot space is literally full to the roof, and then the cargo rack on the tow ball as shown carry’s the stuff I don’t really want inside (toilet and fuel - I don’t want a crash with either of them beside us 😄 The Annex is quite bulky to carry, there is a lighter one available that might have been easier. However I just secure that in front of the roof top tent. It basically sits straight on the roof - but it’s only canvass so does no harm. Hope that explains it Charles?

Hi Nik, This is where I bought mine, however the price has gone up significantly in the U.K. I think there are mainland European Howling Moon suppliers. I went for the heavy duty Annex but would recommend the lighter one. The heavy canvass one is pretty heavy to zip on and bulky to carry too. Other than that they are a beautiful heavy duty tent. www.flatdoguk.com/stargazer%2d1%2e8m%7e2400

Thank you Anuroop. That’s correct. Highlighted the car and set it to track, but to be honest this very often does not work, or it drops the car at a tree or just because the car gets smaller. I pretty often end up multi tasking as it can be less hassle to just plan a simple vector for the drone and do it with the joystick as you drive. Just as well I’m off road 🤣 Also the auto track will only put the tracked item in the centre of the frame which is rarely the best shot.

@VISTATREKKER
@VISTATREKKER Жыл бұрын
@@anuroopbs I’m glad to hear you say that. This is a beautiful country but it’s expensive to travel in unless you set yourself up with some level of self sufficiency. My idea is that once you’ve bought a little gear you then feel compelled to use it, as opposed to when you think about booking a hotel and then the price stops you bothering to book and you get put off and hardly ever go. I bought my Discovery for €10k back in 2012. I’d say you can pick them up cheap enough now. Many don’t want them because they are heavy on tax unless commercial, and they are thirsty. They are also relatively complex so they do take a certain level of practical fiddling and tinkering to keep them going on into old age. Mine has 240k miles up now. There are so many variables in vehicle choice it’s hard to say, depends on how many you are traveling with, whether you actually want to go beyond the tarmac and so on. I think there is a lot to be said for doing up a small van for one or two people. Stealth camping in a lay-by is very handy but not an option available to me because my setup is a bit too obvious. In my case that’s okay, I’m usually headed for the back of someone’s field. There’s a lad on instagram who just recently rode along (and wild camped) the entire length of the wild Atlantic way on a bicycle in autumn. He had the cheapest gear that you could imagine and what looked like the richest adventure of them all. We could all take a leaf out of his book. Whatever design you come up with half the fun is the hours you spend pondering your plan, your kit and your route. Make that part of the fun. It’s also an escape of course, but a productive one. There is great satisfaction in settling down in your camp at night and smugly noting that after all your planning you are all set and will have a good nights rest despite all the bits you have forgotten 😁
