Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs) are web-like structures composed of chromatin, histones, and antimicrobial proteins expelled by neutrophils to capture and kill pathogens. This process, known as NETosis, is triggered by various stimuli, including microbial products, cytokines, and immune complexes. NETs ensnare bacteria, fungi, and viruses, facilitating their clearance by immune cells. However, excessive NET formation can lead to tissue damage and contribute to the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases and inflammatory conditions.
