About The Route and Film:
Nevada’s 900-mile south-to-north route leads riders on miles of meandering
two-track roads through Nevada’s expansive deserts, open sagebrush valleys, and seemingly endless mountain ranges. You’ll visit ghost towns, quirky taverns, see desert sculptures, murals, and the world’s largest car forest.

Backcountry Discovery Routes® (BDR®) is a non-profit organization that creates off-highway routes for dual-sport and adventure motorcycle travel. We have introduced a new route with free GPS tracks for the community every year since 2010.

Our work includes rider education, safety campaigns and promoting responsible travel for motorcyclists traveling in the backcountry.
Our volunteer-powered organization works with agencies and land managers to keep trails and remote roads open for motorcycling.

I used to live in Reno and rode an xr650r so seeing Johnny in this was great!...that sand is no joke, tough to ride. You guys did a great job!

Just did the Elko to Jarbidge route July 2022. Absolutely Amazing area! From there camped in Idaho and rode to Twin Falls. Looking forward to doing more of the BDR's. Thanks for all you at the BDR do!

Love these videos. I have been away from bikes for 13 years and just bought a Beta 390 rrs. Son gets pissed Im the slow guy but Im working back into the sport. Im a 57 year old guy who got bit by the bug again. Yes Enduro riding is different than Adventure bike but our lines cross alot. Followed Johnny for years when I had my XR650R. Loved that bike.

Awesome, I use to live in Henderson Nevada, but I didn't cover that much ground. Just a day here and there on my KTM. The dry lakebed along US-95 and I-15 were my favorite. Rode solo I has to make sure I was not too far from HWY. Just in case I crashed, it would be easier for someone to find me, have to go work on Monday.

So good. I'm planning my first long trip. I live right off the Utah BDR, but something about Nevada is just inspiring. More appealing to me and my riding preferences than any of the others. Will probably be doing it solo soon as I don't know a single other rider..

You can probably make 30 different BDR’s in Nevada. The whole damn state is a freaking BDR! We have more ghost towns than inhabited towns. And there’s only a few paved roads across the state. Hell you can take a side by side from California state line to the Nevada state line if you go the right way!

Hey guys, these are the most awesome thing ever! Thank you so much everyone involved. I haven't worked out yet how come these have all just been posted 2 weeks ago but I'm buzzing and have watched most of them now. I'm from Portsmouth, UK and am hoping to come out and ride one (all 😜) of these some day. Apart from being awesome videos, the content, history and information are going to be so useful to anyone doing them. All I can say is thanks again. These are going to go down in history and you should be proud. 🤙🏻

Great doc people! As a northern NV rider, you guys are on the wrong tires. Yeesh. JC has it right with the aggressive DOT knobbies. However, you all look like you had a great time no matter what was thrown at you. Nice work!

OMG, THESE riders had this level of Support. They produced a Movie. Sharing how tough, rough and dangerous this bdr is. Everyone who completes the BDR WITHOUT THIS LEVEL OF SUPPORT. MUST BE PROUD OF THEMSELVES FOR THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENT! there is something lacking with this bdr production, maybe to much Hollywood in it? Thank you for mapping the course. I am sure we will use it wisely. thank you encouraging America to get out and Ride America! Before there is no more gasoline for the common folk!

When I saw you first encounter snow on the way to Jarbidge, I thought you should turn around. I know that country very well and knew you still had a lot of elevation to gain still and the drop into town is kinda steep. Glad you made it out safely

53:30 we learned the same lesson on a muddy climb, ruined one Africa twin DCT and one normal clutch from mud packing the fenders and seizing up the front tire.

I would love to know what the bikes are each team member is riding on a trip like this and how they did, what the bike was good at and what it wasn't and why. These BDR films are valuable. These are great films.

Love the video, I have done some of the AZ BDR . I'm hooked ! Sorry for the jeep issues but that should have been expected, jeeps are not made for that kinda weight, they barely carry there own weight... anyway, definitely made me relook at how u will prep for NV bdr

I've recently discovered your channel. I really enjoy the early stuff and can't praise them enough. From my point of view this Nevada and the Utah videos lost my interest fairly quick. I appreciate the amount of effort that goes into these and don't want this to come off as belittling, but more like feed back. The earlier videos and the east coast videos felt more personal. More immersive. The voice overs on the Nevada and Utah are drab. There is less footage of interaction of the team. The other videos I watched from beginning to end. These two I skipped ahead a few times hoping to find the editing style that hooked me into watching these films. I love the commitment to this program and hope someday you can cover the mid-west. I know there isn't a lot of excitement in the midwest, but for me trips out east or west aren't affordable. something I can drive to locally would be great. keep up the great work!

Austin is great ghost town that place you guys ate at is a great place there’s a lady there that makes great burgers love the ole gringo hot sauce they have and then when you go to the bathroom they got the old-school Meyer soap to wash your hands with ! The old Bar will take you back to the 1800’s

A parallel route along paved roads could allow non off road vehicles, like an RV, to act as support. Even your Harley buddies could ride parallel, perhaps even trade rides for a section. The support vehicle could carry all the heavy tools, spare parts, long range radio/CB, and even kegs of beer. If anything happens, the RV/support is at the next stop.

How about BikePacking hard packed dirt routes? Do you guys do this too? I am seeking areas around Southern Nevada to do this with myself and my two dogs as for shorter routes with my electric mountain bike and one dog being in a meidum sized trailer with only carrying the essential gear and the right type of tires for my bike and dog trailer. Looking to do about 125 out with 125mi back. Camp and ride, Camp and ride with me and my dogs.

Recurring themes; oversized bikes, overloaded with insane amounts of gear. I think people enjoy the planning process of buying gear more than the rides or they would focus on what is actually needed.

Some people...I would never dream of running one of these with anything bigger than a 500cc bike and around 50-60 liters of storage.

They use big bikes with full luggage because they know people will. If they all used little bikes you wouldn't be able to tell if it was possible on a big bike. NV in particular is pretty difficult and a smaller bike is a good idea, but plenty of people use big adventure bikes on these routes.

Serious adventure touring involves sleeping dirty and muddy in the rain with smaller bikes. But they sure look cool and pretty on the big bikes;)

Well I set thru it all and was very entertained with not a boring moment. Much like a easy rider everyone is a friend when your on a motorcycle on an Adventure. Well this one did not disappoint. Thanks for creating the Utah BDR. I just started this year collecting bikes to do just such rides here in the Great Northwest. WR250R, F800GSA. and new this week a 690 enduro R. Il be collecting info to make my one choice to ride BDRs Around Bend Oregon out on 2 wheels

Seriously, I'd like to see an RV show up at each fuel stop or accessible waypoint. The RV could hold all the BBQ, tools, spare parts, and beer, plus tow the bikes to and from the BDR. It would be ideal for small, 450-650cc type bikes that can't carry much gear, especially if you have RV buddies anyways; I'd ply them with gas money.

Support vehicle should never be a Jeep! We use a Ford E-350, towing a trailer. Has never let us down!

Ride right except when on the highway. I drive semi trucks and if your on the white line on my passenger side then your outside of my mirrors. I CANNOT SEE YOU!!! Stay in the middle where I can see you or I may come over thinking the lane is clear

Since very few of us have a chase truck to dump all our gear in - I don't find this video very encouraging... VERY entertaining... but not encouraging. 🙂 I rode sand in quite a few places on the Transamerica trail last year and even with a relatively light bike (701 Enduro) sand was no fun at all given the bike had 60-70lbs of touring gear on the back of it. The sand on the Nevada BDR looks a LOT worse than anything on the TAT.

I like the idea of the BDR, but I think a few things need to be considered more: You shouldn’t need a chase vehicle. IMO, half the routes should be rated beginner to easy intermediate level to get new ADV riders involved. Most BDRs are intermediate to expert. I know there are harder options on the routes, but there should be more options for less experienced riders. I know you’re working on shorter xBDRs or something like that, which is good. It’s easier to get maybe 3 days in than 10. After all, there’s travel time to and from the BDR.

I've now done parts of CA and NV, as well as all of AZ, NM, UT, WA, ID, WY, and CO. I've done AZ and CO twice. You don't need a support vehicle. Beginners can absolutely do the BDRs if they have people with them. (I've done all of them solo except WA) You can do most of them in five days or less, especially if you're a better rider. These routes are set up to be done by an average off road rider running light. They run them on big bikes with luggage to make sure it can be done that way. The lighter your bike, the lighter your luggage, and the higher your skills the easier this will be. But it is still completely doable by your average joe.

A support vehicle with a trailer allows smaller bikes to skip riding hundreds of miles to the start and back home. With support always near, a group of smaller bikes doesn't need to lug so much gear, just the basics. At least with many or most BDR sections, the support vehicle could be an RV, or van, taking a parallel route on paved or well graded dirt roads. A parallel route on pavement is essentially a standard camping/road trip for an RV or touring bike, and folks could switch up, maybe let the RV driver do one or more BDR sections, so everyone gets a turn.

Had a chance to ride a small section of the Nevada BDR in April and managed to wipe out in the sand (lol). I'm forever grateful to the BDR organizers and supporters. These routes are truly amazing! At this rate 2 more bdr films from here. The motorcycles will all be towed on built trailers with rooftop tents, professional chef's and directed by james Cameron.. with added special effects of riding...please... go back to the roots of your inception..

I just wanted to give some constructive criticism. I've watched & really enjoyed all the other BDR videos leading up to this one. This BDR video felt a little overproduced and less in the spirit of real adventure riding. This felt more like a television show and not as raw / adventurous as the previous BDR videos. It was a little hard to connect and get sucked into it because it didn't represent the gritty nature of real adventure riding. I didn't enjoy the glamping with the support truck, sleeping at hotels and the cheesy commentary that overlapped the video. The whole video felt a little impersonal and detached. I'd rather watch some gopro footage from each of the riders, maybe some drone shots, and watch everyone interacting with each other and taking to the camera more instead of the faceless commentary in the background. Hopefully you guys can get back to your roots again and start doing videos in the spirit of the first few. Love what you're doing and the way you're developing these routes and trying to preserve these wild lands for riding. Keep up the good work.

How can you make a BDR look boring? Literally less than 15% of this film shows people riding motorcycles. A lot of cooking, 4x4ing, campsite bs-ing, barhopping, etc. Yawn.

Yeah, I feel like I saw a couple random photos of Nevada scenery thrown in somewhere with the rest of the reality TV garbage. The other BDR films were all inspiring and made me want to go ride them. This one not so much. I feel like I didn't even get to see any of the route.

I think that statement is BS, if you want something bad enough anyone can figure how to achieve it. Nobody needs a brand new bike, I bought used and saved mucho. Then collecting camping gear, one piece at a time, with patience within a few years you’re ready in more ways than one. Then yes it’s gas and time off work, patience and planning anyone can do this. People do these routes almost daily during the season, and they’re just regular kind of folks. But bullshit to for CEO’s and execs only.
