All those names on the Arizona Memorial...they are still in the ship. It's been deemed too dangerous to remove them, with the oil and fuel leaking. So the ship is now the tomb for all the crew. Ship mates that did get out, as they die, if they want to be interned there, they can be. Most get cremated, then a diver goes down to place them (in the urn) among their shipmates.

Lou Conter is the sole living survivor of the U.S.S. Arizona and as of Feb 2024, is 102 yrs old, and he has decided to not be buried with his shipmates. The last internment at the U.S.S. Arizona was Lauren Bruner in 2019, at age 98. Thank you, Gentlemen for all you did for your country.

The irony of that event was the failure of our government to heed the warning of the impending attack. A trillion dollars a year in national defense and they failed to defend us in the only two recorded attacks on US soil in modern history. Now as a result of the "oil and fuel leaking" there will be environmental consequences as a result of leaving those ships where they lay. I feel bad for those men as they were serving the very people that let them down.

As someone who was born and raised in Idaho (and will return there one day to live), but has lived a long time in western Washington, I couldn't live in Hawaii. Not because of the cost (well, partly because of that), but because of the monotony of the climate. Pretty much every day is between 75 and 90 degrees for a high. I like seasons too much. Yes, I reach a point each winter where a week in Hawaii sounds nice, and by the end of each summer, I'm so ready for it to be over. But no matter which your favorite season is, it will roll around again. I love fall most of all, with the crisp mornings, mild afternoons, changing colors of leaves - especially the aspens in Idaho turning gold. But I like living in an area were we cycle through the heat of summer, the cold of winter, and everything in between. So yeah, nobody asked, but for me, Hawaii makes a much better vacation destination than a home.

It was fun to see the trip from another viewpoint! I think Hawaii is a great place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there. There is a huge world out there. Stay home, save your money and make epic trips each year to new places. My oldest son travels the world for his job. I can tell you, the world is beautiful and worth seeing. After you’ve been around the world a few times, then choose your spot. You’ll never have any regrets once you’re well traveled. ❤

It's expensive cause you were shopping in Safeway!!! If you went to FOODLAND down the road where most locals shop, you'll find prices not that bad. I buy a gal. Of milk for $5-6. U can order other items online. Rent is what's the kicker. Lot of young ppl moving here just starting out rent studios or rooms, that can be interesting. And it makes a difference where u rent, what u can afford and ur willing drive, catch the bus, or rail for work. Ppl here, just have a hard time buying a home. With dad having ohana here, I sure there would be someone willing to help you out with a room or couch for a cpl of months for u to get the feel of living here, but you just need to pull ur weight.

Great video Navaeh. Very enjoyable. You may be nearly eighteen but don't let that stop you learning to swim. I didn't learn until I was that age and actually taught myself simply by going to the local pool and getting comfortable in the water and developing from there. You'll find things much more enjoyable if you do.

So enjoyed this video!! Your take on the Diamond Head hike was so funny - my sentiments on the uphill climb too…. I remember doubling over laughing after coming out of the tunnel to see all those stairs and my son at the top saying “c’mon mom!! You can make it!!” That was so many years ago and had no lights in the tunnel 😯 We live about three miles from Kualoa Ranch so you were all in our neighborhood😁

Nevaeh, Nice video! How exciting for you to visit the birthplace of your Dad. Although I've never been to Hawaii I have family members and friends that have and they all say how beautiful it is. I love to travel and have done my fair share. My favorite place has been Costa Rica. Been there several times. I've traveled throughout the USA and each place is special in it's own way. As a young woman I often wished I could live someplace other than Minnesota. However, upon returning from each of my travels I realized that there is "no place like home." So as much as I dream about living in other places my feet are firmly planted right here. Maybe it's because this is where I have family, this is where I feel most loved. I once stayed in Costa Rica for three months. I loved it there. When my visa was about to expire I made my way back to Minnesota. As I was about to get on the plane I was feeling sad to leave behind my new friends but realized how excited I was to go back home. So my suggestion is, if you feel you want to live in another area of the world do a test run. Visit for an extended period of time, like 3 months then return home. Once you are back home you will know if you want to make a permanent move. Thanks for sharing your Island experience with us. I always enjoy watching your videos.

Spent some time in Hawaii when I was in the service. It was about 6 months in when island fever set in and after visiting home it was better upon return. Yes, it is kind of expensive there, much like most downtown areas of most major metropolitan areas on the mainland. Swimming in the open ocean in the surf is definitely a skill, learning how to deal with things like undertow and rip currents. A couple of tricks with fins, if you have to wear them and walk, walk backwards or sort of sideways, otherwise walk out to almost waist level and put them on in the water. Seeing your family there makes me miss and remember the sights and believe it or not the smells. It's great you all had such a great time!

Saw your parents a couple of weeks ago and was excited when you dropped yours. it’s kind of sad that everything is so outrageous out there. When our daughter left home at 19, she had a budget all figured out. Food, rent, etc. I told her, "There's no such thing as a toilet paper fairy." I had always bought her shampoo, deodorant, etc. etc. AND her toilet paper. Twenty years later she said to me, "I ran out of toilet paper shortly after I left home. I laughed when I remembered you'd said, "There are no toilet paper fairies. You were right, but it took me 20 years to admit it to you." What a girl!!!

I moved to Hawaii (Hilo on Big Island) when I was 18! I grew up in NH and VT so it was as different and as far away as I could possibly get from home and still technically be in the US. I went to college there...initially Hawaii Community College. I definitely recommend community colleges to save money on pre requisite classes in the first two years...even had some of the same professors as the university working there. After 2 years I transferred to University of Hawaii-Hilo. It was truly an amazing place to "come of age" and shaped me for the rest of my life. It taught me so many things like how to really slow down and appreciate the present moment and gave me a deep connection with nature and the ocean. Eventually I felt like I hit a glass ceiling there so to speak, with it just being such a small and isolated place, so I moved away to the San Diego which has a very similar climate (warning once you get use to that weather its hard to go back!). I still go back and visited every year or two since one of my best friends still lives there. Its a really special place for sure and might be fun for you to live there even just for a few months (just make sure you research and go during the best weather months of the year if you do that)!

I just love your editing skills and the climb up the seaside cliff was exhausting! I could feel it. Your horseback riding, collecting sea shells and finding your fashion twin was priceless!

Nevaeh, I just saw this music video and I thought of you and your Dad. I heard your mother say that you were not a fan of the Hawaiian music your father was playing and singing in Hawai'i and that you preferred classical music (!) She never mentioned Metallica. Well, the music your Dad listened to growing up was probably mostly the "Jawaiian" stuff with a reggae beat, which is still popular, but not traditional or contemporary-traditional Hawaiian music, which I love and have devoted most of my KZfaq Channel to. Your Dad also mentioned he never thought about letting you kids learn about the culture of your Hawaiian heritage and that he should have let you and your sister join a hula group (hālau) when you were in Washington. Hula is one of the best ways to become connected with and learn about Hawaiian culture because it involves Hawaiian music, dance, language, plants, instruments, history, legends, and stories of people and places, and more! There was o written language before the white missionaries from New England created an alphabet and books (starting with the Bible) for the Hawaiian language, so before 1920 when the missionaries arrived, the traditional chants and hula were the only ways the history, legends, lineage and description of events and people were passed on among the people and to the generations after them. Sorry, this comment got so long, but your Mom said you and your siblings liked history (and Iʻm a teacher). Anyway, this particular song, "Kuʻu Home O Kahaluʻu" means "My Dear Home Kahalulu," which is located on the Windward Side of Oʻahu, near Kualoa Ranch where you rode the ATVs. It was written in the 1970s by Jerry Santos, a legendary singer-musician who is still performing today, when he left the islands after high school -- just had to get away and "find himself" as your Dad understands, but after some time in San Francisco and elsewhere on the continent, he began to reflect on his life and feelings about home, so he wrote this song as a letter to his sister, who had also dreamed of moving away but had decided to stay in Hawaiʻi to be with family and take care of things she needed to do. He reflects on their idyllic childhood, riding horseback in the Koʻolau hills, catching fish in the mountain streams, and laughing and singing the whole night long..But then he realized that times and places had changed (and 100 times more now than in the 1970s), but he had to get away to find what he missed and accept what had changed. This song is so iconic, when people hear just the first few notes on the guitar, they immediately recognize it. This style of guitar-playing (kī hōʻalu, or slack-key guitar) is also unique to Hawaiʻi and Hawaiian music. You should hear the original by Jerry Santos, too. Itʻs so beloved, he is expected to play it every time he performs, so there are many video recordings of it. (I have several on my channel.) Just search for "Jerry Santos" and "Kuʻu Home O Kahaluʻu" will probably be filled in, or you can type it yourself. And ask your Dad if he remembers this song. Santos is a common name of Portuguese immigrants to Hawaiʻi to work on the sugar plantation like your fatherʻs ancestors. Sousa is a VERY common last name in Hawaiʻi. You probably have lots of cousins you didntʻ even know about ! I also wanted to share this video with you to show you the diversity of the young people your age, and I think you can see how you would fit in. The students are from Punahou, the top private school in Hawaiʻi, and Kamehameha Schools, the prestigious institution for Hawaiian children, established by one of Hawaiʻiʻs princesses, Bernice Pauahi Bishop. "Me Ke Aloha Kuʻu Home O Kahaluʻu" means "With love, my dear Kahaluʻu." kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZ6Umqx1nL-ucZs.html
