The chorus of this jam is just outstanding. It sounds so good. That 4 part harmony is just amazing. "There is this gluey thing that happens sounds almost compressed it just comes together in a natural and clean way" I think that's what you are referring? Brilliant man. Thank you.

love this video Alec! The review is fantastic. The fisheye part of people complaining about the neve is hilarious. The song kicks ass too! great vocals and harmonies. Do you think it still makes sense to get a 1073 if you have a UA Apollo 8xp that has the 1073 plugin?
@alecbrits

Thank you so much! 😂 was fun to shoot that. I think that it depends on your workflow. If you are in a position where you are happy with the results the UAD 1073’s give, then you don’t need to buy the neve’s. For my workflow of mixing and tracking in hybrid, the 1073’s are in use almost every day. :)

Wow, Alec! I just found your channel and I had to immediately be subscribed. Amazing test and in-depth review. I have a question for you: which one would you keep if you had to choose and keep one among the RND Shelford Channel, the 1073 DPX, Neve 8801, or the BAE 1073? Also, have you tried the Heritage Audio Britstrip? Seems interesting. As you can tell, I am looking to have a two channel mic pre that has EQ and/or COMP for mix/master duties. Anyway... thank you for your content and any feedback you can give me regarding the pres/strips.

Hello Alec, first of all, I really enjoyed watching your videos ! Specially for the preamps ahah I had a simple question regarding drums recording : In general, I use 8 mics in total for recording my drums, but I wanted to know if you would rather go for the Neve 1073 OPX or would you stay with the Neve 1073 DPX (or 4 Neve DPX in my case) ? Does the EQ section of the Neve 1073 DPX bring something more ? Or would you say that some plugins might do the trick ? (please do not consider the factor of price, focus your answer only on sound)
@alecbrits
@alecbrits 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Darwin J! :) thanks for watching. I would go down the 1073DPX route. Unless you need the conversion of the OPX. They do sound different, but your tonal flexibility of the DPX is a winner. The other option would be to go down the 500 series route as well. That allows for more flexibility and growth over time.

Hey Alec! I'm curious - (and I don't imagine it's a problem) - about the power supply. When I see the non-IEC, or non- separate power supply on a unit like this it makes me think about warm audio, lol. I'm sure there's no comparison, but I struggled with RF, and other noisy crap from the WA-273 with a similar power supply port and I know AMS has to cut some corners here and there for cost sake.
@alecbrits
@alecbrits 2 жыл бұрын
I get where you are coming from there. I have found that generally units with external power supplies have a better noise floor. I think that in the case of the 1073 DPX, the amount of components inside would be harder to shield if it had an internal power supply. Having an external supply also allows for an easy replacement is anything goes wrong with the power supply. I used to be against external power supply’s, but these days, if it lowers the noise floor then it’s all good!

@@alecbrits Thanks for your reply, Alec. I appreciate your talent and the gear you use to record it. Again, those vocals are so musical. As for the Fearn/1073 comparison, I'll be sure to share my findings, though it'll take a few weeks. I'll order the DPX today so that I have it on hand when rebuilding the studio after the upcoming move. Once I'm setup and I have time to "play", I'll start comparing. Meanwhile, analogizing the two pres as being microphones, to my ears, the Fearn is like a U67 as where the 1073 is a pre-Sennheiser U87 - each in all their glory. 'Know what I mean? We'll see what actual A/B comparisons reveal.

Would be interesting to know your EQ settings also, as you are informing about Melodyne, Valhalla etc. Did you apply any effect to the bass track? Any compression to the other tracks? How hot do you print the tracks? Thanks Alec, sounds great.
@alecbrits
@alecbrits 2 жыл бұрын
I have taken photos of each of the settings for the instrument tracking, if you would like to see them, please feel free to shoot over an email. :) As I stated in your other comment, I have not affected any of the individual tracks at all. No eq, no compression. The only effect was adding the BX-True Peak limiter to bring up the overall volume to a better playback volume, without feeling too limited. :) I try to bounce out the tracks around the -10 LUFS. I record the individual tracks between -8 and -14 on logics meters. :) then I automate from there. Hope this clears it up Jens! Thanks for the positive feedback. :)

That output goes through two transformers. A lot of people are finding that you get the intended sound by having that volume up and then pushing the input into it.

I believe there is an input transformer and an output transformer, by decreasing the fader output on the unit and driving the input, that gives you the “signature” tone that the unit is often asked to do.

Hey Geoffrey! :) I have used it on my mic buss before, but due to the fact that there are no detents on the pots, getting accurate stereo matching was always a problem. I currently have it sat on my drum buss, and it now does not get touched at all for any other uses. I’m sure it would pair really well with most mics, so I’m sure the Telefunken would be a solid combination.

@alecbrits

Thanks! :) the DPX has a far more linear distortion and sweet spot. The OPX does not drive as well there is not really a smooth transition between clean and distortion. The upside to the OPX is it feels a little more open and has 1dB steps. Of course the cost per channel is also a lot less too. :)

Very nice sounding i hear from yours recordings. For acoustic music, guitars, bass and vocals which preamp would you recomend t88rLB +1073eqLB 500 combo or spx1073?

Great video again. I’m a little late though. Quick question. Can you send the digital AES outputs to let’s say, a MOTU 8D. Then send the analog outs to the console for monitoring and tracking at the same time?

Hi Alec! Amazing video, thanks for that! I have a question and I was hoping you could help me with that. I just bought a 1073dpx, the digital card for the dpx and I also got the portico II Master bus processor. I use an apollo 8p interface. I want to establish a digital connection between the apollo and the dpx. Is that to be done with spdif to aes cables together with bnc wordclock cables? Second question is how best to connect the mbp. Should I use it as an insert in the dpx channel or is it better to connect it to the clean outputs of the DA converter on the dpx. Help is really much appreciated! Thanks!
@alecbrits
@alecbrits 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lieuwe, thanks for the comment. With regards to the AES/SPIF I’m sure that should work, but I would read the manual on the DPX and see what they recommend. For tracking I would assume the MBP would be used in the insert before ADC. For mixing, it could be a dedicated insert in your daw using the Apollo. I hope that helps!

The Neve sound happens when ever you use the unit, either clean or driven it has a distinct tone. :) use the level control to get the right level into you DAW, use the red gain knob to get as much harmonic content you desire.

Hey David, when switching they have always been a little clicky/poppy. The one I needed to have fixed started loosing signal when the Eq was Enabled, a clicky button is normal, just keep an eye on it, and if it starts to loose signal, then you gotta ship get a replacement unit. :)

@alecbrits Жыл бұрын
Hey Jason! :) thank you so much. I have reviewed the OPX as well, so feel free to check that out for the demonstration. The DPX is a more versatile piece of kit as you can drive it as well as EQ it, so your tonal options are more versatile. With regards to the 1073 classic, I think tonally they won’t be too far off, but the advantage to the classic is that it can be repaired a lot easier as it’s not surface Mount technology. :)

@@alecbrits Thank for the reply, yes your OPX revew was brilliant as well, great sound, I do mainly hard rock and metal and I find the neves midrange bump very good for drums that you just can't eq into the picture, hard to explain but it does something for the attack. There is snap there that isnt in other pres but only noticable on drums. I do have a couple of BAE MP but the eq and price of the DPX has me curious.

@@jason.martin I totally get it. My favourite drum pre is the API 512V. Combined with a 550A. That’s midrange that punches and somehow sits in a mix in a way that requires very little work afterward. That’s my feeling currently! :)

Hey Alec -- you seem to be a fairly confident person, and i see a lot of comments commemorating you for the incredible quality of your demos and reviews. But just on the off chance you need a boost today... I really enjoy the compositions you make.They're extremely musical and very very *not* stiff. You seem to have really cracked the trifecta when it comes to generally making music. Good gear, good practice, but first and foremost .. musical music (lol). Thanks so much! :) either would be a solid choice. The HA81 offers a solid range of tonal control that the DPX does not. However the DPX’s metering options allow you to gain stage the unit faster sometimes when dealing with really dynamic sources.
