If you're simply judging it based on being a "2 channel interface", then yeah...forget it...buy the Audient or Motu, etc. They are great value. OTOH, if you recognize the quality leap of these preamps + the ESS ADCs..and look at a Neve 1073DPA (no ADCs) for example ($2600)....then one realizes, getting a taste of serious Neve magic for $1250 looks pretty appealing. My order is in.

been saying neve should do this for like several years. so glad they did but i think it's a shame just on a business level not to be a 1073pre since that's the one most people first wanna have when they begin to upgrade from basic preamps.
@kbb149

I thought about this too...while a 1073 is my preference, I'm not surprised they chose something not decidedly "vintage" sounding. I'm sure the marketing would have helped, but offering something more contemporary, but still super high quality, might appeal to more folks.

@@JKohlmann It would have been nice but SSL moved large parts of the manufacturing to China. From the SSL 2 to the Origin mixing desk. This one is made in the UK as far as I know. It has transformers and good conversion apparently according to a source. There's also ADAT, balanced inserts and the preamps are likely better than those in generic interfaces. So yeah, it is more expensive but I expected that because of the Neve name and a few of these reasons.
@chrisricetopher21
@chrisricetopher21 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah… Neve also has a $799 single channel headphone amp (at least used to be). It’s a fine wine principle. What makes Neve good does not come cheap. If Neve didn’t care about contending for elite status in every metric (quantifiables AND intangibles) they would just be another Audient or RME. Nice, but not Neve. Look at it this way….The Apollo twin has similar I/O, but folks complain less about their price tag because their plugs add the marketable value, so it makes more sense to the average consumer. This two channel interface has every sonic quality UA wishes they could have BUT the exchange is in the plug-ins. You do without the plug-ins in favor of flawless, noiseless conversion and some of the the smoothest mic-pre flavor on the market. Quality over plug-ins for the same price. You simply need it or you don’t :)

@sweetwater
@sweetwater Жыл бұрын
Hi NEXTLEVELMUSIC, good question. While it would be easy to use the 5017 by inputting it as a line input, I would say it is completely unnecessary. The whole point of the 88m was to provide the legendary preamp sound of a Neve 88 style preamp in a small USB interface. So these preamps sound awesome and carry all the transform goodness and warmth that you would expect out of a Neve preamp! Fantastic interface in my opinion! Sad to say, looks like the Latency is not that great on this interface, he mentions 4ms Round trip Latency, but according to the user manual on Neve's website that can only happen when your drivers are set to a 32 buffer @ 192khz. Question is who records @192k ? If you play Keys or lots of plugins you'll want to set the buffer to 128 at the lowest more than likely. So, if your like me and want to record at 44.1khz your Latency would be 13ms, just over three times more than what he said. Looks like buying the 88R LB is a better choice, much more control with Full Power too.

AMS Neve responds to USB power questions and the numerous accusations of using DSP preamps, using Chinese parts off of AliExpress, etc, ETC! Here is the email response I received from AMS Neve, in its entirety: --->> "Thank you for your email. The 88M uses the same preamp topology as the 88RS console and is built to the exacting high standards we apply to all of our products. We don't outsource 88M manufacturing to China or anywhere else, the 88M is designed, manufactured and assembled here in the UK by our skilled engineers. The 88RS preamp design differs from the vintage Neve preamp designs and is less power-hungry than classic class-A preamps such as the 1073 this allows us to take advantage of USB 3.0 bus power. The 88M uses boost converters to convert the USB 3 DC power supply to produce adequate voltages for the +/- power rails and +48v phantom power. The 88M input is transformer balanced using the exact same 88RS Marinair specification transformer which gives the preamp 6dB of 'free' gain, the signal is then amplified through a premium AD797 op amp which makes up the bulk of the gain staging. The preamp output is also servo-balanced, a premium feature you won't find in many audio interface preamps. This topology is identical to the 88RS console preamp. The only real difference between the 88RS console preamp and 88M preamp is a slight reduction in headroom, from +26dBu to +18dBu, which is still more than enough for professional recording, other than that, the design and performance is identical. " EDIT / UPDATE July 6, '22: There is a thread at Gearspace on the Neve 88M. A rep from AMS Neve is answering questions. Under New Product Alert, titled: "NEVE brings legendary sound to your desktop with NEVE 88M Audio Interface" Gene Hall has provided an initial review, page 13, at the Gearspace post mentioned above. Hi, thanks for your interest! If you go into the 1/4" line input, you'll bypass the built-in preamp on the interface, so you can use your preferred external preamp instead. However, the line inputs also go through the Marinair transformers, so you'll still get a bit of Neve "color" in the sound regardless of whether you bypass the preamp. This seems like an ideal entry point for those looking to have an interface with some power. My only wish is that there were more outputs for a 5.1 setup. Still, this is an interesting entry point for anyone getting into the interface game (though I'm aware of other options as well). Most entering music/recording are not going to be in the need of a 5.1 setup

@ in theory it’s a great idea, but real neve preamps usually have massive power supplies and big transformers and so on. So I’m just wondering how close these actually will be (even though it’s the same company) given the fact that it’s a weaker power source and they’ve fit so much into a small box

With great interfaces that are much lower cost made by Audient and SSL, it's hard to see going for this with its limited features and price. All they got going is the Neve branding and Made in England. Perhaps, they are okay targeting only a few customers, more like a fun project rather than trying to make as much profit as possible from a business standpoint. That being said, I have spare cash lying around, I would love to own one, not that it has any advantage over what I already have, just that it's a Neve.
@jas_bataille
@jas_bataille 2 жыл бұрын
Here we go with the "I can't believe the price tag!!!" comments. So allow me : - No, this is not comparable to the SSL's offering. SSL is a much bigger and diverse company. They have manufactures in China now and have lines for live production and digital consoles as well. Neve does not. - No, this is far from unthinkable. Traditional cinema mixers can go up to 2500 dollars per channel (I shit you not), with things like 75dBs of gain + 50 dbs limiter combined (for a total of roughly x125 the original source). Yes, there are ways to hear insects in documentaries without doing sound effects, and to use parabolic microphones to hear sweat dropping from an athlete's face. Sound is limitless :D - If you think this is unthinkable, you're just not the right audience for this. I'd much rather may this much and be set for life than pay 400 dollars to some shady company I won't name who are completely convinced that them tuning by hear compensate for horrible distortion figures. And finally, if you're just looking to buy a good interface, for the love of God, unless you're made of money, don't even thing about it. It's not going to do you good to learn on something with this much headroom anyway. Neve is Neve.
