Try doing research on pomonas pectin. It uses way less sugar, almost none, or there are substitutes. Just used it for the first time and it is wonderful!

Our homegrown fruit jams taste like they were just picked due to Pomona's! I would find myself getting sad picking fresh berries and then adding massive amounts of sugar to them to make jam/jelly for preservation.

On my tattlers I mark a dash on the rubber after I open a jar and wash it. I'll re-draw previous lines that have faded too. This way I can keep track of how many times they've been used! I'm up to 4 on some!

I love my Tattler lids!!! Yes it’s a big investment to fully transition your canning lids over to Tattler lids. BUT it’s definitely worth it. Especially if people panic hoard button top lids like last year. The trick is tightening the bands AFTER processing.

Hello, just wanted to add we reuse the disposable lids for vacuum sealing dry goods in jars, we just sterilize them and seal them on while still warm, they work great. I love our Tattler lids and use them on our acid-based canning, (tomatoes, pickles, pineapple, etc....) that way it doesn't etch the metal lids and possibly leave chemicals in our food. I have heard a lot of people suffer failures with Tattler lids but if you read the directions and follow them, we've never lost a seal in the 4 yrs. we've been using them. Some of the tattler lids you only tighten lightly and then when canning process is finished you hand tighten them and let set until cool, the newer ones are different, so read the instructions.

I would recommend getting a jar wrench to open your jars. There is no damage to the lids and it works great. The tool is sold with canning supplies. I have had mine so long that I don't remember the cost but I know it was less than $5. It's well worth getting!!

Fyi it's seasonal when they have them in stock but the dollar tree regular mouth lids are excellent and I've never had one fail and at $1.25. For 10 I buy the heck out of them each spring lol. Also I do reuse lids but only for vacuum sealing in jars or using oxygen absorbers. Now if I could just find $1.25 rings and wide mouth lids I would be set 😆.

I see you have comments turned off on Ms Ivy Jo's kitchen. May I suggest MONSTER TOAST for the kiddos. Bread, liquid of choice (water, coffee creamer or milk), food coloring, jelly (I recommend a light colored one like apple) Mix The liquid with food coloring and take a small (like water coloring) paint brush bought only for the purpose of food, and paint your bread. Do not over saturate the bread, then throw in the toaster - top with butter, jelly, whatever you like - My girls really loved their monster toast. I am having a difficult time trying the tattler lids. Mine hardly ever seal. I am taking the rubber gasket part and using lids I've already used - THAT has worked every time...

I love both tattler kids and Weck jars. My only suggestion is NOT to purchase them off of Walmart. I ordered some Weck jars this spring and they were all broke. I ordered some from the actual Weck website and there is a huge difference between the ones from Amazon vs Weck. Same for tattler, I got a greater deal going right through Tattlers website and I know they are truly genuine.

Some of those Weck jars are $40 a piece on UK Amazon. That is utterly insane. Canning jars! People back in the day used to store dozens, even hundreds, of them to get through the year. It would have cost them the equivalent of many THOUSANDS of dollars to do that at those prices. It's a frickin' jar, not a diamond.

So apart from the fun of it, why would someone make their own jam when it sure seems it would be cheaper to buy it in a store? Seems the expense of the lids and jars, the cost of the frozen berries, the sugar and gel all make it more expensive. I realize over time the jar will pay for itself but the supplies and lids cost will not go away. How much did one jar cost today? Love that you broke down the expenses for the different types and seems like the tattler lids are a great gift to someone who cans so that they have one less expense. Might be discouraging to have to buy them for oneself. Love that the girls are such a "help" to you in the canning process!

I usually make my own jam from berries I grow myself. In this case…you’re right…it’s less expensive to buy jam at the store. But jam is very simple to make, so it makes a great way to introduce kids to canning…or in this case try new lids to see if i like them before canning something much more time intensive 😊

I really love my Weck jars and was going to buy their juice jar 3-pack, and discovered their glass contains lead. Has anyone else heard about this? I don't want to be concerned about safety. 😟
@TealHouseFarm
@TealHouseFarm Жыл бұрын
This is an interesting question! I did some digging. And most of what I’ve come up with is a couple blog posts from people saying that they heard from someone who told them that the jars have lead in them. I didn’t see any concrete warnings or testing data. But it would definitely be something to look more thoroughly into if it’s some thing that concerns you! I only have a few Weck jars because they are so expensive, so it’s not something that I’m very concerned with. 99% of my jars are traditional ball, mason jars.

@@TealHouseFarm Thanks so much for your reply! I did hear back from Weck (as I had sent them an email from their website), and here is what she shared: "The small percentage detected is minimal and migration into the food impossible. The German food and drug administration responsible for food safety is testing the composition of the glass mixture, as well as the rubber ring. Total elimination of lead in the glass is not possible. The J Weck company in Germany has been in the food preserving business for over 100 years and takes food safety very seriously." Based on some Amazon reviews and replies to questions others asked on Amazon about lead, I feel confident this is an accurate statement, and that these are still high quality jars. I will be placing an order soon on their website for some juice jars to add to my collection! Blessings to you - Merry Christmas!

Good video, but you should of included the old reliable bail type canning jars. Tatler and Weck are nothing but reinventions of them. Glass lids and rubber rings go back a hundred years. The new style metal ball lids and canning jars are nothing but an industry rip off, a "new mouse trap" that work no better than the old bail type glass lids and rubbers. I still can with the old bail jars that work just fine. No plastic, no disposable lids, no PCBs, no new lids to buy each year. I know they don't make them anymore and that's unfortunate but they can still be found second hand and new rubbers are still available. I'm just old fashioned I guess and a lot older than you.
