That's True Scotty... My cousin is a licensed mechanic... Back in 2013 I had a job riding on me getting transportation... I knew to get a 3800 engine because I was low on cash & I know those engines run forever as long as you take pretty good care of them. By the Grace of God, one of my old student's dad knew someone who was selling an '03 Impala for $2500... The only. It was a private seller. He was driving an Impala & had a 3rd on sitting in his yard. The only thing wrong was the tie rod & struts because he said he hit a guard rail from almost falling asleep at the wheel. My cousin test drove it & said, "If you don't get this car, you're crazy!" He said that because he knows how OCD I am. He was focused on how it ran. I got the car. The first thing we did was go to the salvage yard. He found two practically brand new struts with the original tags still on there... I only paid $50. It's also true about OEM vs aftermarket... Back home I would always go to this one parts place because they would always price point & tell me the risk of the OEM vs. the aftermarket. I needed a fuel pump for my '03 Impala & they told me to buy the OEM. They close at 5:30 pm on weekdays, 2 pm on Saturday, & closed on Sunday... But I loved how knowledgeable they are. They are always cheaper than Auto Zone & these other places. If they don't have it, they will order it for me! 😊

Some O.E.M. prices are beyond ridiculous. Having worked as a PM in the Automotive aftermarket, I know firsthand the games each play with pricing.

I just don't understand why their prices are so high.
@excavatoree
@excavatoree 4 жыл бұрын
@@doodletechnologies3189 I think a lot of them don't want to be in the business of supplying parts for vehicles not in production. I've heard people argue about whether or not there really is a law saying they have to supply parts for some length of time, but I can imagine them pricing them really high to discourage people, yet be compliant with the law. I can't believe the FWD axles Honda sells (600+ dollars each) are 6x better than those I see for around 100.
@travispratt6327
@travispratt6327 4 жыл бұрын
@@doodletechnologies3189 I'm assuming it's a mixture of people who only will buy oem as well as insurance that has to buy oem. They charge it cause they can and really it's simple price gouging.

my question is how many of those OEM parts made in the same factory as the after market parts. Seems to me there is probably only so many companies actually building alternators for example.
@travispratt6327
@travispratt6327 4 жыл бұрын
David Kearns Well, they could use different tolerances and specifications to get a cheaper price even if it’s the exact same factory, but with that being said a lot of parts have to pass certain standards and safety minimums, so it’s probably very similar if not the same.

Love your channel, Scotty! I've got a 2005 Civic EX, and have been doing all of the work on it myself without a whole lot of prior knowledge. I'm about to replace the much of the front and rear suspension with new parts (coilovers, bushings, ball joints, end links, rack ends, etc). Took the last 6 months or so buying the needed tools and parts so I can do this kind of work myself, and it really feels good to have the tools I need for the job and be able to get the work done for a fraction of the price that I'd pay someone else to do it.

Amen to buying auto parts locally versus an online sale. I was a bodyman at a collision shop in a former life, people would have OEM endorsements on their insurance policies or would pay out of pocket the difference between a/m and OEM parts to put their cars back together with factory stuff...the kicker is, often times we’d pull OEM parts out of OEM boxes and there was a definitive reason why that hood, or fender, or whatever was never installed on the assembly line! We had a saying, it fits like socks on a rooster. I never knew if it was a rejected stamping or worn out machines pressing the sheet metal or what...

As usual, you are right on target Scotty. But here is what you missed.... When you go to the dealer for a repair, they don't always use the OEM part you expect them to use. Most of the time they order the part from the local Auto Parts store as you would, but they charge you the OEM list price for that part. I have seen this happen a lot of times when the local parts delivery truck comes into their lot. You don't get what you pay for, there is no way you can be assured you are getting OEM parts unless you are standing right there with the mechanic when he opens the OEM box and displays the part for you. Been there and have seen it happen!
