besides it almost certainly not the electric motor, rather its a bearing inside giving in or a lash shim has failed, so if the motor still works right, a diff is a diff inspect and change knackered bearings. dunno how hard to find out endfloat/crownwheel clearances though.

Duncan Otema pretty sure he’s saying he’s glad he did it before the problems started. That’s the risk anyone takes when buying a used car, a lot greater a risk when buying an American used car. It’s not like he misrepresented it to be a Toyota or something. Would you give them their $ back if you sold it to them & something broke that you didn’t know about or know what they might’ve done to cause it(not perform basic maintenance or rag it out)? Don’t know any individuals that offer warranties when they sell a used car.

My Sequoia is 14 years old with 180k miles on it and I'm gladly having costly repair/maintenance done if needed. Scotty said it, that Highlander is still really nice. It deserves to be fixed.

Scotty is right! Hybrids have more parts compared to a conventional vehicle, more parts that can break down over time. I would only buy a new hybrid but I personally think hybrids used for commercial purposes (taxi, uber, deliveries, etc) are the only owners that fully take advantage of the gas savings before the car starts to fall apart. They definitely recover their investment sooner than the average driver.

Also it's probably the outer wheel bearing I worked at Toyota for about 4 years as a service tech and never replaced an inner wheel bearing. Going bad. It is 90 percent outer wheel bearings and 10 percent bad alignment or struts make cupped tires. Should've just replaced the outer wheel bearing and sent it.

Aren't you curious what might be causing the noise in the electronic differential? If it was mine, I'd open it up and look for anything obvious, if it's possible to tell what's causing it. Would be nice to find out something just needed tightening back up or a shim that I could fabricate, was needed to restore proper clearance in some component. If you ever have the chance to open one up, I hope you will record the process for a video.

Scotty - Thanks for your videos they are helpful. Hey, I'm looking to buy an older midsize truck (I5 or V6) that has higher mileage to keep price down. I'm looking at 05-10 Nissan Frontier, Takoma, or Colorado. Do you have any suggestions on ones that are better to work on as I'm assuming I'll have many repairs. I'm looking for vehicles with 125,000 - 175,000 miles. I will occasionally (once a year) pull a boat weighing 3,500 lbs. Any suggestions. I'm leaning toward the Colorado as the I5 appears relatively easy to work on. Or the Frontier because it seems to be priced nice The Tacoma is incredibly expensive. Thank you. Jon.

When an experienced 50+ yrs mechanic can’t figure out that lifting the whole vehicle off the ground and putting it on jackstands to test the awd.....that’s why you need to avoid old mechanics like Scotty, only takes him ancient technology vehicles that he can understand not the newer tech it’s just too much for him.

Hi Scotty. Love your channel, but I am going to take a bit of a different view regarding hybrids. I have two : a 2019 Camry and my wife drives a 2017 Rav4 ( both purchased new). I would agree in the regard that when they break, probably more expensive, but there are trade-offs. For example, my Camry has NO belts; everything is electronic, so I never have to worry about being stranded after a serpentine belt lets go, or an alternator takes a crap. And, I AVERAGE between 53-55 mpg.... IN A CAMRY! My wife's Rav4 has a rear end similar to what you reviewed in this video. I changed the fluid in the front and rear axle assemblies at 50,000 miles (hybrids do not have standard "differentials"). No problems and she just passed 70, 000 miles. Perhaps the Highlander you reviewed did not have this service, I don't know. The takeaway: whether a hybrid or standard ICE, maintain it, and it will last a LONG time, especially (I also have a 2012 Tundra and a 2013 Camry ICE) if it is a Toyota.

It really depends on what Hybrid you buy. You can buy a new Toyota Camry hybrid, Prius, or Corolla hybrid and they will last over 200,000 miles. You could also buy them 3 - 5 years used to get a better price. But yes, he is right in that you don't want to buy a 250,000 hybrid because at that point, you are looking at more expensive repairs.

Hey Just FYI he's gotten to the point where he just wants to make car videos and repair the easy stuff. He knows that the problem is just an outer rear wheel bearing. But just didn't want to do the work. I don't blame him make a video about an issue get a few 100k clicks make some money then send it down the road for someone else to actually fix.

Scotty you'll get a kick out of this one. My brothers girlfriend had one of the early Neons that they were selling and couldn't get rid of. They finally called the junkyard to see if they could sell it to them. They said "we already have too many of them here" He asked "Well, can you have it?" And this was like 15 years ago!

Very good advice. Don't buy high mileage hybrids, turbos or other complex (AWD) cars, unless your getting it for dirt cheap. The KISS rule! I drove a Highlander hybrid AWD from CT to Maine and back and it was a really comfortable and roomy car. I loved it, but I didn't own it. I got 28 m.p.g. on that trip. The tow rating on the hybrid is 3500 lbs., the V6 tow rating is 5000 lbs. Boaters beware.

@@christophers5510 And why ? Try to drive a 10 year old hybrid and try a conventional one. The conventional one drives like a crap while hybrid is quiet and smooth like a new because electric motor has fewer moving parts. Why not to reduce air pollution and having better mpg so we do not need to constantly stop at gas stations ??. If you worry about dealer expensive battery, mine wanted $4000 but I fixed it at independent mechanics for only $650. Did you know that hybrid 12 volt lasts much longer and brake pads lasts longer and longer period between routine maintenance ??.

@scottykilmer I just bought a 99 4runner limited with 230k. Timing belt was done at 180k, very clean cosmetically, not much rust at all on frame, CO car all its life, only 2 issues are that I noticed the rear driver drum break may be leaking a very small ammount of fluid, also between 60-70mph on highway the steering wheel rattles. I paid 5k out the door at a used dealership. How did I do? What should i look into about the steering wheel shake?

I have noticed something over the years. Chrysler products always wear out reverse pretty quickly. A good Friend of Mine had a 1977 New Yorker. I was a really nice riding car, and it had lots of power, was pretty rough on gas, because it had a 4 barrel carburetor on it, but reverse went bad on it not to long after I got to know Him, so sad, it was a really nice riding car.
