Greg Macke - Your Car Angel reviews the second generation Highlander Hybrid. The Toyota Highlander was introduced in 2001 and was the first crossover to offer third row. It seats 7 passengers and is widely considered one of the best, if not the best crossover car ever built. The reliability of this car is legendary.The Hybrid debuted in 2006 and came mated with a 3.3 liter engine. The 5 speed transmission was the only choice, but it was very reliable as well. The Highlander Limited was the only way to go but if you were on a budget the Highlander came in a 4 cylinder configuration. However you could not get the 4 cylinder in hybrid form. The hybrid is actually a very fast car especially at passing speeds. It is on the Halo List - which is a list of the best used cars to buy. The 10 easy steps to buying a high quality used car is also featured in this video.

I’ve driven a 2007 FWD Highlander Hybrid for 7 months. Its in excellent condition with 84,000 miles. The pros and cons of a Highlander Hyb. became quickly apparent to me: Pros: incredibly smooth ride, awesome legroom in the rear seats, good sound system (jbl equipped), reasonably fast (~7 second 0-60), plenty of room in the cargo area, very neutral looking (not ugly but also not a headturner), comfortable interior overall, rides well in the snow for a FWD, and can even handle itself in offroad situations respectably Cons: unimpressive gas mileage. Dont believe in the BS EPA efficiency ratings. You will NOT get anywhere near 32 MPG city in this thing. Not even close! Even with a conservative driving style (light acceleration, coasting, braking early, maximizing use of the electric motor) expect MAX 23-25 MPG in WARM weather. In a mild Wisconsin winter, my MPG got down to 17 MPG city at the lowest. I took it into the dealer and nothing was wrong with it... Highway mileage is poor as well, you can expect around 20MPG even with cruise control... At that point, you really have to ask yourself if the gas savings will pay for the extra cost of the hybrid components and the crazy maintenance costs Nothing has gone wrong with my vehicle so far, but the looming necessity of a new battery in 60k or so miles is making me question my purchase, especially when the fuel savings are too unsubstantial to be worth it. To me, you should either buy a non-hybrid Highlander as theyre very reliable and well rounded vehicles, or buy an efficient gas vehicle or a Prius if you really want great Hybrid efficiency. the hybrid variant simply isn’t worth it in my experience. If youre looking to reallyyyyy save on gas, STAY AWAY!!!

That hasn't been my experience at all. I have a 2011 hybrid and I regularly get 28+ mpg combined. When in heavy traffic which is my typical daily commute, I easily hit 30+ mpg. I bought it with 85k on the clock and I've put about 50k more miles on it. I service it on time and have not seen a drop in mpg performance at all. I love this car! Even considering trading in my '04 GS300 for another Highlander hybrid

My '06 Highlander Hybrid standard had multiple breakdowns along the way and has been difficult to find technicians to work on it without costing a fortune (usually have no choice, but go to the Toyota dealer for service). The worse one was the brake actuator that works with the hybrid system, cost $3,400 to replace and 9 days of rental car charges while in the shop. I will go with a non-hybrid vehicle in the future. My Highlander has less than 160K on it.

I had to replace not only the costly brake actuator, but the radiator, climate control system, air conditioning compressor, all 4 power window regulators & motors, entire headlamp assembly, the radio/CD player and have repaired a major vacuum leak in the engine compartment that was causing rough idling & backfiring. Also the clearcoat over the paint is peeling off on the entire vehicle even though it was regularly washed and waxed. My check engine light is on again so more repairs & money.

Just a FYI...If you're looking at these used...be sure and get a warranty that covers the ABS pump...or set aside $3k for the repair if it hasn't been done..The brakes HAVE to be bled with a computer and the appropriate software and someone who knows how to do it !...The pads and rotors are standard parts...The new part (ABS manifold assy) from Toyota, is an upgraded part that SHOULD last a long time...You can possibly find a used one and risk having to do the bleed procedure again if it fails also...Before it kicks the brake light on the pump kicks on and off at idle as it tries to pressurize the manifold..Not fun and not cheap and not every service shop can do it.

I bought a 2013 HH Limited for $60,000 5 years ago and I absolutely have no buyers remorse. With well over 125,000 miles that have been truly trouble-free , I don't see any trouble for this vehicle on its way to 300,000 miles. With a steep initial price tag I cross shopped all the European luxury crossovers from Porsche, BMW, Audi, and MB and do not regret my purchase one bit. I have a friend with a 2014 Audi Q7 who traded it in for a 4Runner recently due to poor reliability and exorbitant maintenance costs. The only regret he has is the poor dealer service at Toyota and I told him he should have bought a Lexus instead.

Also the power supply, $6k installed. Also the fancy electronic diff, $2.5k. For a few dollars less he can get a V6 without these shorter lived specialized components. What do you think?

Now that 5 years later, has your opinion changed? Are parts interchangeable with the other mass produced hybrids? Looking at sales Toyota was only selling 22k a year in North America. Is the transaxle unique to the highlander hybrid or is it the same as what is in the other cars? Are there any parts that are one off that are going to be expensive at time for replacement? Are the battery cells unique or does it use Prius battery modules that are plentiful? Thanks! Have a great day!

I bought a used 2008 Highlander Hybrid (Limited) 8 years ago, and it has been an amazing vehicle... reliability has been astonishing. Summer or Winter roads, the Electric AWD is awesome. BUT... eventually, you're faced with what I'm facing now. At just over 260k miles and 12 years old, it needs a new hybrid battery pack. Up until about 2 years ago, it consistently got 26-28MPG daily mixed city/highway driving, and 30MPG if I was careful, and you could easily feel the regenerative braking working when coasting. Now it's down to around 22-24... and at most 25MPG if I baby it... and zero regenerative braking feel when coasting. I'm contemplating an upgrade to something much better... rebuilding it with LiFePO4 cells. Takes 1/3rd the number of cells (factory uses 8-cell NiMh modules = 9.6V, exact same as 3 series LiFePO4 cells), would give me at least double the capacity (using 15-20AH cells), and should far outlast the originals. The only thing better would be if they got the Lithium-Glass technology in production!! (that's going to be exciting!)

I was contemplating buying a 08 highlander hybrid but I'm sceptical because of the battery the car has 160k
@beforebefore
@beforebefore 4 жыл бұрын
@@remyricka5367 After having ours for so long, one of the indicators of a weakening traction battery is that during light-to-moderate braking, it used to regen strong, pushing the energy gauge down most of the way into the solid blue "Charge" zone. Now with the weak battery, is normally only goes down 20% of the way. This means it's using more mechanical friction brakes a lot more than it used to. This happens when the battery goes "soft", and won't accept energy like it used to (cell impedance is higher, preventing high current in-or-out). If you live in a "cold weather year-round" area, don't get it... these cars will resist using the traction battery when it's cold, so cold weather hybrids have battery failure sooner, and never get the fuel economy they are capable of.

@@girl600podcast Still the same, now at 287k miles. Just took it on a 3300 mile road trip. Initially we were fully loaded near capacity, got about 24 MPG at about 68 MPH (GPS speed, not speedometer), with a luggage carrier on top making aero worse than normal. Coming home were were lightly loaded, no rooftop carrier, and at 70-72 MPH got 26 MPG. It's hard to justify spending even $1500 to rebuild the battery - considering how long it would take us to recoup that expense... especially now that it will only be driven about 50 miles a week since both our boys are away from home.

@@AldousHuxley7 The owner did everything by the book. Arizona car. No rust, but paint's shot. Oil every 5000 is very important to keeping the motor, rings and seals clean and free for long life. Regular coolant changes prevents seal and metal corrosion. Brake fluid and steering preserve components. Trans and rear end lubes on time. Timing belt and water pumps every 90,000. Battery Cooling ducts clear. Spark plugs 2x on time. Front control arms twice. Struts twice. Engine torque mount once. Brakes and rotors twice. Alignments twice. Radio Head unit once. Windshield and bumper. About $15k of reciepts. Plus, I've known the guy for 60 years. A meticulous guy who drives the speed limits. From what I know now I'm not sure I would buy a 200k hybrid unless it had perfect maint. Definitely get a mechanic pre-inspection. This one gets real, regular 20 MPG on the average. Not below 18 nor above 22 as measured at pump. A well maintained V6 would probably get 16, but would avoid the time bomb of the battery replacement. This one acts ok, but mpg is down 6 from new, not a good sign. Quite and tight over bumps, and good on interstates, but feels strained above 80 mph on I-5. Only had it for a year & a Covid-limited 6k miles. But like it so far. Passengers really like it. As do people moving things. A good substitute for an old pickup. I like it very much as it turns out. I did not expect to. A Limited is very large and quiet and comfortable especially in the backseat. It has lots of well thought out features. But as you can see, it's kind of expensive to maintain properly. Good luck. Today is an expensive time to purchase.

I considered the hybrid, but just wasn’t comfortable with it since I was buying it used and out of warranty. I’m sure I prob wouldn’t have had any issues but I wanted the peace of mind. I ended up getting a 2005 base, 1 owner with only 90k miles instead. Literally looks brand new inside and out. I don’t get the gas mileage benefit but I get the peace of mine. It’s also a awd v6

I bought the hybrid version out of warranty and that was a big mistake. It had multiple malfunctions/breakdowns/warning lights with the hybrid system and the only place that can troubleshoot it is the dealer which costs a fortune. Last repair was $3,400.00 for a hybrid system related part that had to be replaced. Just that one repair ate up any savings I had in fuel costs and much more.

Randy S holy crap man. Sounds like I made the right choice. I’ve had mine for about a year and half now, and not issues so far. I’m coming up on 100k miles but wouldn’t surprise me if it lasted another 200k. I put in the dark headlight housing with LED headlights and a bug reflector which makes it stand out from any other Highlanders. What year is yours and how many miles? I had been considering a hybrid for years but was told by a few people to buy new if that’s the case. Sounds like they were correct. Sorry to hear about your misfortune tho. Do you still have it?

I just bought an '07 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited as well. 106k miles, great deal. It's probably the best car I've ever owned. Can anyone here give me some feedback on how their used Highlander Hybrid has been performing? I'm considering getting a 2008 highlander hybrid myself with 70K miles on it, but I'm also looking at a similar highlander, but not hybrid. Pretty much same car, I'm just debating on Hybrid vs non-Hybrid.... In terms of reliability, doesn't the "Hybrid" system increase the complexity of the engine/overall mechanics and therefore the likelihood of something breaking down at some point, making it less reliable that its non-hybrid conterpart ? Here's an example of that. Researching about the common issues of this particular vehicle, the most common problem seems to be a brake/ABS malfunction where the actuator ends up needing replacement, which is a $3000-5000 repair. Apparently, there was a recall for that on the 2006-2007 vehicles but not the 2008. Let me know what you all think and please share your experience. Thanks!

We have an 07 limited hybrid 4wdi. The 4wd is a joke. The second a tire starts to slip, the traction control takes power away, and you can’t turn the traction control off. Awful. We literally got stuck in 4 inches of snow because I couldn’t power through it. As a car it’s great, just don’t expect much from the worthless 4 wheel drive system on the hybrid models. Also, fuel economy on the hybrid models isn’t great. Maybe 20 on the Highway. 25 in city. You’re not going to be getting 30+ mpg I would recommend getting the V6 model 4wd. Not the hybrid.

what is the life of Hybrid battery and how to check this battery is good. How much it cost if needed new or refurbished
@ronaldmail00
@ronaldmail00 4 жыл бұрын
The life of the battery is 20 years plus. To check the health of a used hybrid battery, without having to plug into the car, take it for a test drive and see how far you can drive on EV only under 25 miles per hour or lower. Depending on how far you get in comparison with others of the same model will give you a idea of the health of the car you're in. Nickel hybrid batteries are under $1500 unless you buy it directly from Toyota, which will be outrageously more expensive.. To pay someone to replace it will vary depending on the shop. It's the equivalent of replacing a transmission.
