Yeah, this is the best way to chip most of the time. But I play in Oregon where it rains a lot and the grass isn't cut all winter. I had to learn the hands forward Phil Mickelson technique also. If the ball is in deep wet grass and close to the green you need a steep approach and quick exit. Hands forward and staying forward, weight forward, being agressive, and quick turning of hips and trunk upon impact are all key.

Had a idea to get a few of the golf instructors competition where the have 4 teams of 8 players who are high handicap golfers they instruct there team and they compete vs the other team. To see who is the better instructor, that would be a huge hit especially if they do it on KZfaq live. At the end there would be prizes for the winning team, most improved. Longest out. Etc.... anyway I think that would be a blast to get going. Just a thought.

I just broke this rule, I put forward shaft lean on the club while chipping! Here was my situation: My approach shot missed the green, a little short and left. It ended in a patch of rough between a bunker and the green. I had about 30 yds to the pin. One last detail, my playing partner hit his ball in the same location (and conditions)! He was about 5 ft further away, so he went first and I went TO SCHOOL on his chip. He put no forward shaft lean on his shot and to me the bounce is not my friend on thick grass. Sure enough the club decelerated rapidly and he got no power. His shot only went 10ft forward (still in the rough). So, I chose the 56 degree club. I gave it a little bit of forward shaft lean. HAH! I BROKE THE RULE! SO THERE! I also went for more angle of attack. I did not expect a follow-through, but kept one swing thought, DON'T LET THE CLUB DECELERATE. Turned out, there was enough grass under the ball to have a follow-through. Hit a nice high chip, which soft landed short of the pin and rolled out about 5 ft pass. From there I was able to make the putt for par. I think Mr. Short Game, the qualifier, should be, NEVER, if you are on the fairway cut...

I'm the 60 degree wedge with hands forward guy :) However I will say that I find it quite reliable as all I need to do is strike down. When I try the method you present here that's when I start to hit thin as I find I need to be very accurate with the strike. What am I missing?

The problem with this antiquated technique from the 70's-90's is that it pigeon holes you around the green. It's putting all your eggs in one basket or chip. You can't use it for every finesse wedge shot that's required around the green. Having a more neutral setup and correct use of the designs of the wedge allows your creativity to flow and get's the odds of hitting better shots around the green in your favor. The players that I see still using this technique are 90-120 shooters and this is the only technique they can do without the yips but as soon as they're short sided with a bunker in front or on a severe downhill lie, they're off to the races. You can maybe use this technique for 40% of chip shots and the rest is using the broad side of a hammer to pound in nails. Sure, it kind of works but there's a better way to use that tool. ; )

@@iDjEntertainment what do you mean specifically about "finesse wedge shots"? I do the same thing (hands slightly forward, 60* club, putting stroke) and it seems to work well. Goes straight, reliable contact (no thin or fat), can hit it a variety of distances based of my backswing (five to twenty yards, or further if I club up). I'm definitely a 90-120 shooter, but it's not this part of my game that's holding me back. I think anyway. Thanks for the advice.
@iDjEntertainment

finesse wedge is everything around the green within 15 yards of the hole, distance wedge is 20-130. Look up James Sieckman for more on the difference between the two. For the finesse shot, you need to get up and down from everywhere more times than you do not. If you do not and it takes 3 shots, you have to reevaluate your approach. What do you do with short sided shots? What do you do when you have no green to work with or if you're into the grain or playing in Kikuyu grass, or you have uphill or downhill chips? If it's you with your 1 technique, you're shit out of luck because it doesn't apply here. The answer is you use the bounce or the toe of the club. 90-120 shooters really don't know what the bounce is, how it works or how to use it. All in all, it allows you to hit every shot needed around the green to get UP & DOWN. Not up, 2 putt, and down. You're turning your 60 into a 54 / 55 and hitting ball first. It's coming off fast and speed of the ball negates the spin. If you want to shoot in the 80's or 70's like mr short game, you gotta get UP & DOWN. @@mtmills100

@@jeremies3612 Phil Mickelson is not relatable. He’s a white rhino. His “Hinge & Hold” instructional video that he put out in the mid 00’s is the most shit on instructional vid on how to approach the short game by 99% of modern short game gurus. Hinge and hold works for Phil because he’s one of the most talented golfers on earth. That is not you. You have iron covers ;)

I’ve been using a 60 deg wedge for about a year and it can be really good but most of the time it isn’t. I guess that is how I ended up here. I notice that when I make a bad chip there is usually very little rotation happening.

We need more "No Bueno!" I miss the "No Bueno!" Side question...What about width of the takeaway? Trevino said that if you can touch the wedge head in your backswing, (meaning if you take your trail hand off and can reach the club head), you suck at pitching and chipping. If you can't, you're likely a good chipper and pitcher.
