Great tutorial. So many knitters struggle with getting the right length of yarn when it comes to long tail cast on, because they weren't taught the way to measure, like you've demonstrated, there are a few options. There's a 4th option which I use a lot. I wrap the yarn around the needle with a diagonal slant about a quarter of the stitches needed. If I need 60 st's, I wrap the needle 15 times. Holding the yarn at the end of the sts, slide them off the needle. I double the length to get 30 st's then double it again for 60 sts. I add a palm length to that, then cast on from there. When I need to cast on a large amount of sts, I'll the 2 ball method.

Thanks for the tips Sjorcha! I'll have to try that next time I have a shorter cast on to do. I like the idea of using one technique for shorter ones and one for longer ones - being flexible is always a good thing!
