Im a 35 yr old mecanic here in uk. What ive learnt is that being a mecanic is having confidence. If your confidence is knocked where by you have to turn a job down and look a amature or anything else you feel like whats the point. Ive felt low and down in past but after a few beers and sleeps your back on it !

Gotta love those ECM’s man! I had a 2002 Dodge Dakota and the original ECM went bad. The shitty part was they stopped making the replacement s so I wasn’t up for paying the high price on a limited amount of new ones available so I bought one on EBAY and had a local dealer program it for me. Saved a ton of $ and I was happy it worked out well for me.

2000's Dodge are awful for that, I have a 2004 Ram that are known for the TIPM failure, and you need to get a TIPM with the same options as yours. Or none of them will work after.

When changing an ECM I would disconnect the battery then connect the negative battery terminal to positive to discharge any component that may have a capacitor. If you have the time, I would also let the vehicle sit over night to insure the discharge. The very first step after replacing the ECM and hooking up the battery would be to reprogram your keys. Best of luck.

Yep you want to essentially ensure everything gets fully power reset. Then depending on the type the car may have to be towed to a dealership (Honda and Mazda are the worst at that).

Have you ever had one get killed by a charge? I feel like it might be one of those one-in-a-million things that CAN happen but never will... I work on computers mainly though and in over 30 years have never had static kill anything. I never use any ground straps or any of that bullshit. I do discharge them though beforehand.

You can blow crap if something isn’t discharged. I think computers are more lenient because I build them with no care. But modules these companies use probably have cheap as dirt components. I’ve sparked a module even after a disconnect and drain. Capacitors can be unpredictable and it’s why people preach caution.

You will need a ford IDS and manufacturer subscription to reprogram the BCM, will also need two keys. with the IDS you can download the correct BCM software with the vehicles vin and reprogram it, best of luck.

I just bought this whole setup for the shop right before I retired. Our fleet was 90% Ford so the cost was justified. I was glad to turn it over to the younger guys to use, without it your towing vehicles to the dealer regularly.

I have the Thinktool Pros which is basically the same scanner as that Topdon. I've had it for about 2.5 years and it's been a great scanner. As far as I know, it cannot do module programming. I didn't think that your Topdon scanner will be able to do it either. I'm pretty sure you have to use Ford's IDS or FJDS program with a J2534 pass through device. From what I have seen, programming modules is not an easy job unless you have the right equipment and the know-how on doing it. I know it sucks not to be able to always do a job but sometimes that is the way it goes. Just keep up the good work.

I had topdon my selv, but sold it and got over to xtool agian,. I do tuning and a good amount of ECU work. Also i fix some modules in some cars. But in some cars its just pain in the ass. Volvos, programming keys... oh man i hate it.

I hear so many people say the scanner tells the mechanic what's wrong with the vehicle, and all they have to do is change the part, those people can't even change their own oil, probably can't even check the oil.....People have no idea, I get pissed when people say the scanner tells the mechanic what the problem is...

Nooooooo!!!! You took the screen protector off??!! Where they do that at?? That topdon won't do that anyway, bro. When you pulled it out, i was like that thing diesnt do online ecm programming. You need a J2534 pass-through device or an immo device with eeprom to pull info from the old ecm and reprogram the new one. You also would need a PC and the vehicle specific software from the manufacturer as well. That Topdon scanner is pretty nice, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't do a lot of things that other scanners in its price category do. It currently will not do fca autoauth, despite the fact that they advertise the ability to do it. If you read the fine print on the listing all the way at the bottom, it says that the fca autoauth feature is currently under maintenance, and is unavailable. You will need to use a 12 8 bypass cable on those fca required vehicles. Only launch and autel branded scanners currently have the autoauth feature available due to software copyright problems right now with other brands like topdon, kingbolen, otofix, ancel, thinkcar, and others. The topdon also doesn't have individual graphing capabilities, it doesn't support canfd or doip either. Also, the key programing capabilities are extremely limited as well. The best thing about it is the topology. Everything else is standard and if you dont care about topology, you can get a launch crp 919 ebt for less than half the price at about $450, and it does 3x as much as this topdon Phoenix plus.

thank you so much man! you i just ordered the crp919ebt elite version ! you legit saved me 600 dollars. plus it has, like you said aaaaa bunch more functionalities. Only downside is that software update is 2 years vs lifetime(topdon) but whatever lol! thanks !

@@CommentThink I'm glad I could help you out man. Scanners are really confusing and it's hard to understand the difference between all of them. I wish someone would have explained it to me. Just an fyi though, topdon doesn't have lifetime free updates. Almost no scan tools offer lifetime free updates. The only ones I can even think of that do aren't even full blown scanners, they are little Bluetooth dongles that connect to your phone. Topdon only offers 2 year updates just like the launch. The difference is the launch cost a 3rd of the price to update. Remember though, the scan tool is still fully functional after the 2 year free update period, and will still work just fine. You just won't get any of the new updates, which I promise you it won't affect anything for several years after the update period expires, and at that point you've gotten your money's worth after 5 years, and can just upgrade and buy another 👍 I own the launch CRP 919, so if you need any help, gimme a shout.

((not the reason i ordered this )) im curious though, can this be used to tune cars ??? i have an oft2 tablet, so im wondering if i made a mistake in purchasing that if the LAUNCH does indeed flash ecus ??

That tool does not do programming why do you keep making up false information. You need OEM software, a laptop, and a j2534 device to do “programming”. That do will only do resets, initializing, and relearns which is not called programming. You can tell how experienced you are.
