fun fact, there are blinds that go in between glass layers of the windows (we have very snowy winters, so windows have 2 layers of glass to keep the heat inside). My parents have had those for at least 17 years, and the don't get dirty because nothing gets there. Although they are a pain to repair if something gets broken

I have blinds in every room of my house. They are a pain to keep clean. The dust - at least in my experience - is not visible - maybe because I clean them regularly. HOWEVER, even if you don't see it, you can definitely feel it when you touch it. What's worse is, when you clean it, the slats STILL feel dusty!

OMG, yes! I had one in a new house, and had no idea… eventually I realised that there was something sinister in the jets… it took filling it with super hot water and biological laundry powder, and putting hte jets on for 30 mins… the black stuff that came out was like… sushi type seaweed, SO gross. I ended up closing up the jets, and just using it as a bath.

Once lived in a house with a round type bathtub. I don't remember if it was a whirlpool tub, because I only used it once. By the time there was an adequate amount of water in it for a bath, all the hot water was used up. I would never have one of those.

Textured bathroom vinyl flooring is recommended for safety reasons for elderly people. It can help prevent falls and the cushioning/softness as opposed to other harder materials can help reduce the effects of a fall. Picking a color/pattern that "camouflages" more could help.

Wicker waste baskets can be washed, as long as they don't have any wooden pieces on them. Run a sink or bathtub with some soapy water, wash them and then let them air dry. Keep them out of the sun when drying as well. It's actually good for certain ones to do this too as it prevents them from drying out. Which reminds me I have a couple about due for a "bath"! Headboard I agree with even for wood. Hair grease can also get into a wood headboard & cannot be removed. I know I had one. How wonderful you are. Your personality is so easy to watch and listen to. I’m 68 and tend towards exasperation with jibber-jabber. We have just purchased a new “flat black” (hubby liked the colour) “square” Stainless kitchen sink. It is every thing I wanted except the colour (and it cost a fortune.) I’m waiting for it to go into our revamped kitchen so I don’t know how it will go. Hi from Australia.❤

When we put our house on the market in the early 2000s, stainless steel sinks were all the rage, so we removed our harvest gold enamel and replaced it with one. I hated every moment with it. You literally had to polish it dry every time you used it or it looked horrible. Going down the aisle of "smudge proof" stainless steel appliances at Home Depot/Lowes and seeing all the frickin fingerprints and smears is enough for me to swear off them. You made very valid points that should help many people make better choices, thanks!

It would be great to have a video on this subject, because everyone has dust mites so I’ve been told if you have dust. Great ideas of not having items that hold the dust. I really enjoyed your three part series on the things not to have if you hate cleaning! You opened my eyes to some things I never considered like the inverted light and wicker basket style light fixtures that are so trendy now. Unfortunately, I do have the large jetted tub (definitely a dust and clutter collecting dinosaur) and tables with glass inserts (ugh) and a textured vinyl floor (why, oh why) and they all are royal pain cleaning mistakes! As we remodel our kitchen, hall bath and buy new furniture and fixtures I tell my husband I look only at ease of cleaning. Easy to clean is the only trend I want to follow!

I have small area rugs at my 2 entryways and at the foot of my bed. These are to keep as much of the dirt and grass out of my home as I have small dogs that come in and out quite a bit. I recently discovered ruggables, which are washable rugs. There is a base that you put the rug on to. And when it gets dirty, you pull it off and throw it in the washer. The base pad keeps it from slipping. I was told in the past at the senior living place that my mom is at that small area rugs are actually a very bad tripping hazard, for older people.

I had some of the coffee tables with glass inserts. My son's husky jumped up on it and broke the glass. Luckily, no one was injured. As for french doors, mine are just a single pane of glass so it's easy to clean. I love that you used a disclaimer that if someone loves the style, go with it. I'll have to go back and watch you first two videos. I'm trying to streamline my home - get rid of a lot of things I don't care for and find things I enjoy. Our bathroom has an old maple syrup bucket. It's metal and it doesn't matter what goes in it, overall. I do use a plastic liner, though, because of grandkids.

I know it is trendy to slap mouldings everywhere for that antique look -- but having lived in a C19th house, complete with antique mirrors, dressers, consoles, wardrobes, fireplaces and all manner of decorative timbers ,I have lost years of my life to dusting and wiping those grooves! in fact, anything antique is going to be more work, fullstop.

I love baskets. I never buy the ones made of grasses or leaves because, sure enough, you can't wash them. They will just mildew. But I like the other baskets that have a loose enough weave for good air dry. I collect Longabergers. But I have a lot of other baskets too. I use them for decorating but also they are so useful. Once or twice a year I will drag them into our large shower, the laundry sink or on the porch and I will use Murphy's oil soap, a large soft brush and then rinse them off and let them air dry. My waste baskets are always lined. I use a basket for my desk and I recycle plastic shopping bags to put in it so it's not hard to clean. As I change out seasonal decorating, I make sure to rinse all my fake florals and again I give them 2-3 days of air drying before I put them in storage. I've had them last as long as I needed them to. Then sell them at yard sales. I don't do the houseplant looking faux plants but I love flowers. MOST of the time they can be washed without problems. Sometimes I come across some where the dyes run and those get tossed in the trash. I wish we'd go back to all white appliances. I HATE stainless steel for the reasons you said. First they are overdone and they always look bad because of fingerprints. But, you dare not put in white appliances now in case you go to sell your house. Even if the appliances don't go with the house, it has to be "staged" with stainless steel because people don't have an imagination any more.
