I'm worldbuilding the Feywild to be a playable realm for my table, and this is how I always have inspiration for our games (no, not that kind).
Thank you as always, and comment below any Feywild or D&D topics you want to see me cover!

Too many campaigns overlook Exploration. It is truly not about the destination, but the journey. I always start my characters as a Druid. Rituals like Speak with Animals, Guiding Hand and Wild Cunning bring overland movement to life. The party asks a brown bear bathing in a river for directions or a magpie teaches them a melody that will open a secret door to an enchanted cave. Players will remember these encounters long after they've forgotten about some fight with a group of random bandits. Also, I use spells like Sleep, Command, Hold Person, etc., to defeat opponents without harming them. Imagine an adventure where none of your enemies died. That is an idea worthy of the Feywild.

Open ended inspiration comes from learning the lore. There's a lot in the history of the Forgotten realms and I always leave thinking "I'm never gonna be able to play out a quarter of my ideas"

So I made a character named Trogdor who was not a barbarian but an artificer(Leatherworker). He came from a small village and was named after a Dragon that was raised by the village before being corrupted. It was decided that he was a black dragon and after reading lore about the etymology of black dragons I found one from the shadow fell that fit the description perfectly. Lore can have a funny way of adding so much to an already established story

If you need a specific source for this kind of art, be sure to check Lang's Fairy Books (sometimes called the Colored Fairy Books because they're called things like the Blue Fairy Book, the Crimson Fairy Book, etc). The illustrations are all by Henry Justice Ford and they are marvelous.

Okay I just found your channel through this video and I'm *obssessed* with the Feywild, so I think I'm in the right place. My own fantasy world, Absohnia, is basically a setting where the Material Plane, the Feywild and the Shadowfell merged, so Material Plane's folk has to learn to live with the Feywild folk, while the Shadowfell folk are more of a rare sight. This leads to a series of politic, social and even economical questions and every new bit I write is a joy. Looking forward to watch your old and future videos!!

Every time I see Baba Yaga's hut, I hear Mussorgsky (Pictures at an Exhibition). And that image seems to combine two of the Pictures: The Hut on Hen's Legs (which is specifically about Baba) and the Ballad of Unhatched Chicks. Baba Yaga is also similar to Baba Roga, tho they're not the same (kind of like the Poe Sisters, maybe?). And it should be noted for those who don't know, that Baba is "grandmother" and that bitd people were always afraid of old women who lived alone, for some strange reason. tbf, tho, just because an old woman lives alone, that doesn't mean she's *not* a witch either, so you can't be too careful. Thanks for the inspiration, Fey.

A thing me and my players did for a inspiration excersize was to look through a few mappacks from cze peku maps (m player is on their patreon and we were sorting through the maps they got) since a lot of cze peku maps are very stylized and depict very specific locations we could sit there and theorize over "oh what would happen on this map" or "what sort of quets or adventure would lead us on a combat on this map" like there was this really funky one with a elder brain disco rave that really got us going with ideas.

@@Aerostorm56 my players are fellow dms so we were sort of looking together for our own stuff but its also a excellent way to gauge interest if they really show excitement over a map which makes them superhappy when it shows up in game.

Have you ever played the Everway RPG game? It came with tons of art cards and a custom tarot set specifically to help players come up with ideas for characters and GMs come up with ideas for the adventures. It is a really stellar game. I highly recommend picking up some of the cards if you ever get the chance!

You should really check out Rackham Vale by Crowbar Creative. It is a fairytale setting for fantasy RPGs inspired by the works of 19th century artist Arthur Rackham. I believe it is a great example of what is possible by employing the very same methods you outlined in this video, and it is 100% feywild friendly.

some of my ideas are come up with random generation tables I built myself. I created tables for NPCs, magic items, traps, puzzles, quests, and monster descriptions. They're not perfect, but they give pieces that like puzzle pieces create an idea when you try to fit them together. I've done some weekly or daily generations with them for the last year (except monsters, those started at halloween), and I tweak them every now and then as I find it tending to some less useful results

I wish there was a guide on how to build stuff like this. I've been a dm for around 5 years but I find making things like this very difficult when done right and shoddy when done wrong
@thactotum
@thactotum 6 ай бұрын
@@Aerostorm56 it really depends on what you want to get out of them. Universally useful tables with often feel generic, whereas specific to set circumstances with feel like it fails to be useful any other time. most of what mine do is generate prompts. need a magic item, I'll generate type and sub type (ie weapon, trident) and then leave the specific to be decided by the adventure or characters. characters are background and race. they're prompt for improvising the rest.

I like that last, somewhat pre-Raphaelite, piece. Of course the romantic chivalry of Spenser's Faerie Queene and the Orlando which inspired the painters fits well into the Feywild. The old tile game Mystic Wood was a fun expression of this literary genre. Also look at the 1970s art of Roger Dean and Rodney Matthews. They did quite a few album covers between them. Of course music is another source of inspiration. I listened to Gandalf's Fist's album Forest of the Fey for the first time yesterday. That's derivative English neo-Prog verging on Symphonic Metal, so let's say it's a bit of an acquired taste. Perhaps I should write something about the psych-prog-folk-rock inspirations I've used in DnD games.
