To be fair, none of this should be blamed on the company. People should have common sense, and its not wrong for them to have expected that.

I feel bad for the crew. They've probably seen some idiots in the past in Canada and the States. But this is the worst showing of railway safety I have ever seen, and its not even the railroad's fault. 2816 deserves better indeed.

It’s not the railroad’s fault these people don’t respect the right-of-way or have no discipline. If nothing, having a fear for physics should keep them a safe distance. Bad actors tarnish the reputation of Mexican rail enthusiasts. It happens north of the border too.

As a Mexican railfan, it’s saddening to see the result from my own neighbors, but I will give them some reasons for irresponsibly. Rail safety infrastructure like crossings gates, and organizations that promote rail safety are non-existent. They don’t have Operation Lifesaver down there. Train tracks are just there and every time you are near rails, it’s just your brain and tracks. I am also certain railroads don’t have these tracks as private property, so there isn’t a need for railroad police to catch trespassers. If they are private property, there is no enforcement for accountability. There also has been a decline of railways in general where trains are non-existent anymore, which is the case in Oxkutzcab, Yucatan where my parents are from. There’s only a train station, and some rail left there. I wouldn’t be surprised if people traveled to see the train, especially on the bottom rest of Mexico to see this historic moment. These people don’t have a sense of how big and gigantic these machines are and are unaware of the dangers getting too close. These also aren’t excuses to be irresponsible, if you use a brain properly, none of this would have happened. I also tried to find coverage of the death, but there wasn’t much. I think it’s a missed opportunity for the eyes of the public to be aware of dangers available, after all, it was a historic moment for a steam train to visit Mexico. If the deal went international, it may have sparked some action for rail safety infrastructure. So far, the government nor railways have given the initiative.

You know what would be nice? If you also included the footage of the 99 year old former NdeM engineer who not only got to see 2816 passing by but also ended up getting to meet the entire crew and get a close up look at the engine. I can only imagine the memories and happiness that this probably stirred up for him. Yep that's right good things happening in Mexico and with 2816 in Mexico!

Same incident happen at Henderson, Colorado in 2018 when a woman (Kelly Yarish) photographing got too close to the track and got struck killed by steam locomotive 844. This could happen anywhere when people get too excited and ignore safety measures...

Admittedly, as Mexicans, we’re reckless af, we train hop on freight trains to cross the border and either do get on board or die doing so. Our recklessness gets us into accidents. Seeing an operating steam locomotive isn’t a normal thing and hence, we got all “stirred” up. I get that yall are mad at CPKC for sending the tour into MX, and that’s fair. My only complaint is that local authorities should’ve done more to control crowds, but being the ones easily bribed by the cartels, they didn’t do bs. But all in all, condolences to the crew and the woman’s family.

People act like Mexico has the same societal norms as the US. Just look up any video on Ferromex and its a complete mad house. Granted the steam engine is probably drawing more, but pretty much everyone should have expected what happened to happen.

As a Mexican railway fan, it makes me angry to know that many people in our country are so stupid, risking their lives to take a damn selfie or trying to beat the train Stuff which is almost Impossible, anyway, those people are worth their lives.

I'm planning on chasing it through Missouri, but then I saw videos of hundreds of railfans hogging the small 2 lane Missouri roads, passing, driving recklessly, and getting pulled over left and right. People are SO stupid.

General public apparently hasn’t seen steam in Mexico for a few generations as I understand. So it was a super exciting moment. Since CPKS probably won’t be able to be sued I hope they continue what they’re doing and just take a few precautions moving forward. Some of these people have never ever seen steam in the flesh so I can imagine all the excitement!

U forgot to mention that 2816 got a little graffitti while in Mexico City XD. Am mexican and sadly I agree with this, organization, autorities and in general all the people are kinda, weird HAHA. Love my country but sometimes it's hard to deal with things like these happening here.

I swear these comments show how most railfan’s don’t have common sense to do proper research and knowledge with stuff like this. I think a lot of people miss the point that the people of Mexico aren’t taught rail safety like they teach us here in the states and Canada. Rail safety isn’t enforced in Mexico, so most people down there don’t actually understand why standing to close is a bad idea. Or why train hoping on a moving train is kinda dangerous. Look at Ferromex train videos and see how many close calls there are with vehicles and people. And look at KCSM before CPKC, it also shared some similar issues with rail safety. I don’t think this will mean CP 2816 is going away or never running again, I think it’s a matter of better planning for Mexico given how different the safety logic is down there. It’s a learning experience for CPKC, so they’ll learn how to handle Mexico rail safety as the years progress. Now I’m not defending the idiots who stood way too close, but at least understand that logic there is different when it comes to safety. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that some issues happened while on its journey to Mexico City.

they havent had a steam loco operate for like 30 years in Mexico. when 4501 made its run to Chattanooga from Kentucky it was very much the same thing happening, minus someone getting hit.

I still find it crazy that CPKC thought sending a special locomotive like CP 2816 was a good idea.

You know we could do public information bulletins to help teach people how dangerous it can be rather than gate keeping railing trips. These things aren’t as common in this scale in Mexico and it’s really a shame, this should be a learning opportunity more than anything.

When they first announced 2816 was headed to Mexico, I had a feeling it wasn’t going to go well. That was also part of my motivation to see it going south, because of a joke I made with a few friends: If 2816 goes to Mexico, it won’t come back the same. It’s really sad to think that a harmless joke about Mexican railroads became a reality…

I personally met the train master of 2816 while at Franklin Park. He told me he was going to switch with somebody else at Texas before the trip into Mexico. He told me a couple other neat things (such as 2816’s lubrication system is completely new), but man, I’m sure he was glad to get off at Texas. I feel bad for the crew. When I was there for to see 2816, people where generally respectful. The train master said they were all glad the weather was nice (it had rained the day before, and it was expected to continue). Now they’re going home with some of the worst experiences a person could have. The trip still isn’t done yet either. I hope the crew can find the help they need.

2:28 My parents are Mexican, I was born and raised in the States, but I occasionally watch Mexican news (TV Azteca, Telemundo, and Univision are Spanish-language MSM, believe it or not, and they have a lot of subsidiaries at the local level at cities and towns throughout Mexico). I watched a lot after someone sent me the uncensored video, and I wanted to hear as much of the story as possible. There was a TON of coverage about the fatality on local and national Mexican news, quite literally a ton. The news anchors and reporters were literally pleading with people to stay away from the tracks for the remainder of 2816's journey through Mexico as well as around trains in general.

It is unfortunate what happened in my country, people are very reckless and do not know the risks. Just as they also don't know how to respect rules. Mexico is not prepared for an event of this size, although it's hard for me to admit it

Well... I wouldn't say it was a bad idea, those incidents happened because a lot of Mexican people aren't familiar and don't know about railway regulations. I live in Mexico but since I like railroads I'm aware of the dangers it can have being close to the railroad tracks. People need to venture and get stermly advice about railroad regulations.

In the UK our railways are fenced off and I'm always slightly surprised that other countries don't do this. Sure we have trespassing incidents but not things like this! Absolutely horrible that a tragedy occurred.

My understanding is that 2816 will not be returning to Mexico. After it returns to Canada, it is being retired. Too expensive to keep these old steam locomotives operational, I guess.

I understand what happened in Mexico, what people did was regrettable. Being Mexican, I understand what happened when I went to the Emperatriz 2816 event, people were placing coins on the roads. The thing about the woman who was hit by the train just to take a selfie was unfortunate and here in Mexico there are no longer steam locomotives, that's why people were excited to see her doing acts that she shouldn't have done, like getting on the locomotive, graffiti in it and taking pictures too close to the train tracks. 😔

Punishment for for disrespecting operating heavy machinery is severe.

CN hammers in safety pretty hard, if we tried taking a train down the tracks with that many people close by we wouldn't be able to move for hours, it's CN policy to place the train into emergency when there are unauthorized personnel foul of the tracks as it affects the safety of the movement and others around it. CROR rule 14f would be constantly enacted (a short succession of bursts from the whistle to warn animals or people that a train is approaching them) the guys on that CP train have my condolences.

Ironically enough I think this is because Mexico is a freer country than Canada but sometimes that translates into them not doing anything in scenarios like these. In Canada sitting on the railroad tracks like that would get you arrested they might have to ignore every other call for more serious crime they could have possibly gotten that day but theyll keep the tracks clear.

Well the CP and KCS merger happened, so CP units go to Mexico, and KCS units go to Canada. So it feels like that CP and KCS both own the property and yards in Mexico and Canada. Even though it's not gonna be like that forever cause of them working on painting the locomotives in the new CPKC paint scheme. I know it's disturbing to hear that some woman wasn't careful when taking a selfie in front of the empress.

This is not CPKC's fault. This is the consequence of someone who cant use common sense. She knew the risks when she walked towards the tracks and she paid the price. Hopefully 2816 returns to Canada safely and without any issues.

As a Mexican railfan and aviationist I captured a video of the locomotive, where a family literally was an inch close from killing temselves. A guy was doing a sign like get out of the tracks for the family but the didn’t listen but got out from the tracks 0.1 seconds before the train passed, these people don’t have common sense.

This reminds me of something of the rail tour (in Australia) where 2 railfans was on the middle of the tracks at the train goes at like 80kph right pass them

Soy mexicano and the truth is that it was a very bad idea since here in Mexico there is not much railway culture so to speak. Literally, shootings were happening and they found bodies somewhere when the Empress was in CDMX and the railway infrastructure in Mexico is not the best that can be expected except in the south where I live. since there is a project called Tren Maya that took 4 years to build but already has 8 active lines The result of the elections is practically new, they are going to implement 8 new railway lines to the country but that may take another 4 years. Saludos 🖐

It makes me sad that due to these types of incidents, we cannot have the possibility of having more events of this type in the future. I'm a train fan here in Mexico City, and several of the Mexican train-related channels on KZfaq were talking about the precautions people should take when seeing the train passing by. I regret that for those people, the other people who, if we are aware of the risks, could lose that opportunity to see a train like that again.

I managed to catch the train in minot while it was drizzling out, I have some family in Mexico that saw the train too. The pictures they took show a lot of people at not so safe distances lol.
