While we're still social distancing, we were able to capture another episode of Never Too Small in Melbourne. We'll be sharing more of our usual episodes as restrictions lift.
Lauren and Nicholas Russo found Karoot while searching for a home for their growing family, together they lovingly converted the 40sqm mid-century apartment into a two bedroom home. Focusing on supporting the existing feature wall and full height windows.
The space is laid out to guide towards the outside view, using multipurpose curtains to add texture and conceal utilities. Each of which is seamlessly integrated with concealing joinery and materials that flow throughout the home. With a focus to maintain and preserve Lauren and Nicholas are keeping older housing alive and used.

i liked the curtain idea to hide the kitchen and to create privacy in the entry for study. Sure, I agree the curtain doesn't look substantial enough and sad colour (to match the brick wall's depressing colour) but the curtain concept is great.

Great use of space! However, everything looks to be very uncomfortable and it gives off hospital vibes to me. Or even hostel/airB&B. To be fair, if I were to stay in an airB&B like this for a limited amount of time, I wouldn't be complaining.

I was talking to my hubby about that very thing! They could have substituted the 60's round table for a longer table to mimic the dimensions of the kitchen bench. Make the table with lockable wheels, so it could be pulled over to the kitchen for use as a kitchen prep counter/island. Honestly, if you live this tiny, then multi-use furniture is a must.

Yes, and in particular to shrink a kitchen this much when you’ve got two comparatively roomy bedrooms, I find odd. I’d shrink my bedroom to mattress plus 6” in order to get a kitchen with enough counter space-especially if I had kids. PS I do quite like the screening over the lower section of windows, for all the reasons stated in the video.

I wanted to like this going in, but I feel there is too much that wasn't well thought out. That kitchen has practically no counter space at all! Maybe for just a couple that would be alright, but even then there's no where to make a decent meal. Then there's the dining table and bench combo. It's such a waste of space, because you can't actually have more than like 3 people comfortably sitting at that table. Whats the rest of the bench for? An entryway seat to take your shoes on and off? In the middle of the apartment? Then there's the storage over the bed in the main bedroom. Seriously how are you supposed to get to that stuff safely or conveniently? I would understand if that was from before the remodel, but it's ridiculous that was their choice when remodeling. I could honestly go on for quite a while, but overall I feel everything boils down to bad design. This place is purely focused on a e s t h e t i c - being minimalist and pretty. By only focusing on that they've created a horribly thought out apartment that would quickly get frustrating to actually live in.

Clever Creatives: In1987 I viewed rentals in St Kilda East that remind me of this block. Perhaps not the full length windows, but certainly the brick interior wall. At that time, I found these apartments to be uniformly depressing, with dark interiors, poorly maintained, and smelling damp and mildewy. Extremely disheartening to a tenant with a budget. To see the qualities of these buildings embraced and reinterpreted today is such a revelation. Could I live there now ?.... Yes.

Yeah, and the vibe that I unfortunately took from this is that there didn’t seem to be a lot of “customization” per se for the children. I highly doubt that a child would want a clean, white bedroom with no decor except for a plant. It gives me that bad vibe that maybe this is the parents’ choice and not the kids
@tonytunbridge6275

@ebony b It isn't a chair, it is just a stool, no one could do work sitting on that for any length of time. No one has an "armchair", as you suggest, for use with a desk. They could have a normal desk chair that slides in with the seat under the desk, just like most people have - it wouldn't take up any more walking space.

I absolutely love this apartment and the design process behind it! And the couple is so cute together! Only the TV is weirdly positioned in the living room (at least, I guess that’s the TV). And considering that there are apparently small children (or maybe still in the making), I’m getting anxious even just looking at the sharp corners of some of the DIY furniture, like the sofa’s armrest.

definitely one of the best channels i've ever been subscribed to. the shots are so clean and relaxing - and to hear about the design process/idea behind it is such a unique thing, thanks for sharing that. It always leads to inspiration. the only thing about this project that i would not be okay with is the bench in the opposite of the kitchen it looks a bit lost, but that's just personal preference. keep up the good content! never clicking so fast on new videos ;)

I agree and thank you for pointing it out - about the thought process which leads to inspiration. But I disagree with the dining bench, I think that was to give continuity with the sofa against the brick wall.

I loved those old 60's apartments with the brick or stone interior walls. The kitchen re-do on this one is great for a take life style or making sandwiches or cereal for breakfast but I would be a screaming maniac in less than a week if the family was hoping for a meal at anytime... Also, the bed. Why build a platform and rig it so it juts our for someone to whack their shin at least twice a week or more on it? It was a lovely redesign so long as one didn't try to imagine living in it for more than a week. With children? OMG!

I feel like this appartment "renovation" wasn't well thought out. There's a LOT of space dedicated to this "studio/office" area, the couch and living room area is also far too big. But then, the areas that actually need to be prioritized like the kitchen and the only bathroom that also doubles as a laundry area for an appartment that, according to them, is supposed to house children, are crammed into like 2 or 4 sqm, at most. No wonder they had to move out of there and rent this place as an AirB&B (according to the comment section). This space is unlivable in the long term. I wish people stopped focusing so much on "aesthetic" and more on livability and actual usefullness of a space.

This is one of the most practical small spaces I have seen for a family. I love that the living spaces are not on different levels and the living seating is consistent enough to make a single large lounging or dining space as required. Perfect for small kids birthdays! The bathroom looks great too. My only practical concern is if the sink is large enough for a pot / pan but I imagine they might adapt their cooking to deal with that. The steel looks great and protects against glass breakage. I hope they have security film on the glass wall in readiness for child play - balls, tantrums etc 🙂
