Artist Daniel Dorall redesigned his 50m2 heritage small apartment in Melbourne's southeast to better utilize the limited space. High ceilings allowed him to purpose build a study area into the bedroom, that functions both as work space and as additional storage. Collections of books and artworks are deliberately grouped in compositions lending to the home's sense of visual balance. While throughout the apartment modernist concrete pieces and hacked Ikea furniture create the opportunity for recessed storage, and the inclusion of a small fireplace, allowing for a continuity that previously did not exist.

@@hanifmckagan4448Minimalism is characterized by simplicity, clean lines, and a monochromatic palette with color used as an accent. It usually combines an open floor plan, lots of light, and functional furniture, and it focuses on the shape, color and texture of just a handful of essential elements. It has nothing to do with size.

While this space is large relative to the other apartments shown in this series, I think it's efficient when you consider the occupant's lifestyle. He creates a big emphasis on hoarding artworks and other nick-nacks, so unlike other small apartments, his priority isn't to cleverly store away his items but rather to put them on display and recreate an art gallery without making the space feel too cramped (which I think he's done perfectly). It also has a lot more personality compared to other apartments in the series, which are sometimes space-efficient at the expense of personal touches. This apartment is amazing in my opinion

Even so, the space would appear larger without the massive concrete slab in the kitchen area. Not only does it weigh the whole interior down, it also looks bloody painful if you happen to bump against it.

The building was originally a department store build around the turn of last century. Its a landmark building on commercial rd & chapel st Prahran. The space was converted in the late 90's/early 2000's creating these amazing white 'loft style' apartments which really can be styled in a way suitable for its occupants. My partner & I were going to buy an apartment there which was an amazing 2 bed/2 bath 2 story on the western side but alas it went for more $$$ than our budget. I perfectly agree, the too small apartment that are 30 sqm, they are nice and creative but too much hastle doing puzzles in your home, 50 sqm are pretty common, even here in Italy, they are not considered spacious but they are considered ok for 1 or 2 people living in it. So i find that having these beautiful videos and apartments of these sizing can inspire a lot of people that have an apartment of those pretty common sizing, changing things around and make the most out of it. My mom actually lives in a 50smq apartment and sucks, like really sucks, she and her partner don't have enough space and you I can't do anything without moving a lot of stuff around and bumping into things, so she made her mind to never move into another apartment that isn't at least 70/80 that is the average size, but this proves that even 50smq can be really nice with the right use of space. So i love this content, even more because it's more approachable, it gives inspiration and it's what a lot of people actually might live in.

This is my very favorite design ever, as it's not just about "how much storage can I fit " but rather about how to make it livable

Everyone is saying that this apartment shouldn't qualify to be in the series, but you forget that lots of the world lives outside of major urban areas and can afford bigger spaces. Many single people and couples I know live in 1-2 thousand square foot homes. Although this isn't a micro apartment, it's still a creative way of making a unique space work.

It is not about being able to afford it, some of us do not see need for bigger space and that is fine. You have large apartments/houses even in urban major cities, at least in my country. Most people are saying this is not small in Europe, while it can be considered small in USA and some other places where people love to have a lot of space (is all that space necessary is debatable).

This is a micro space for my family. We need ever inch of space in our home. But there are 7 of us. So depends on family size too I guess. 👍

This apartment is a regular size in Bucharest and throughout Romania. And usually here it has a separate kitchen and even 2 bedrooms. Even new apartments with 1 bedroom like this one, are build smaller T-T (don't ask about the price, as that's a different story; you could buy a house on at least 2 levels in France or Italy with how much you have to pay for 1-bedroom apt here. these people think they're building in New York or something >.> )

Bruh it's such not a question of being able to afford. A nice 50 square meter in the center of a any big city will be 3 times the price of a normal home outside cities.

Love the fact that he has retained the old school mosaic flooring. It is easier to clean and needs a polish once in a while.

you can see the difference between an architect and an artist right away. Finally a house that also has an identity and not just minimalist and clean lines

This was very refreshing! I'm a fan of the idea of a small living space however that tends to be synonymous with minimalism. I love knicknacks and souvenirs and pictures of my family so seeing how he was able to successfully incorporate both schools of thought was lovely!

I wish y'all could see the smile on my face when I clicked on the new video... What an episode! I'm amazed by the clash of styles of the interior and the exterior. That ceiling reaaaaally makes the apartment look at least 20% more spacious. And I like the layout. Also, there are very interesting ideas and hacks composed in the interior. I do, however, dislike the amount of stuff in the space. But to each their own. Great episode, as always! Thank you for the great content!

I love this. My first house, in Canada, was this size though it had two bedrooms with significantly smaller living spaces. I love the feeling of space and volume with the high ceilings and great use of full height storage. Sleek and warm, the space invites one to breathe, relax and smile . Lovely.

AMAZING: Space! It's looks twice as big. Brilliant use of space. I love when they covert industrial spaces in apartments. I wish they did that here in NYC.

They did that long ago in Soho - artists using industrial spaces to live and work (some of them illegally). Then the idea caught on with bankers and lawyers moving in and the artists got displaced as they could no longer afford them - the price of gentrifying.

I love the amount of details in terms of furniture and the amount of contratse that can be seen to differentiate the spaces of the apartment. In terms of footage and arrangement of spaces, everything is with the minimum necessary measures to make it perfectly comfortable and habitable. It's a smart way to optimize space
