This is part 2 of the restoration of "The Phoenix", our second giveaway axe. Due to a previous owner welding a pipe to the axe, a crack developed, and we'll show you how to fix it.

Thanks for the good info. I found an old hand forged axe on the mountain I live on and it has a crack in the side. Was pretty rusty but cleaned up well. Sides are a little thin but will make a beautiful wall hanger or kindling axe. I thought I would drill a hole where the crack ends up and then prep and weld it using your method. Keep up the good videos.

Mate, don't take me wrong. I'm a newsubscriber of your videos and i was liking your work so far, but you just ruined the beutifull lines of a portuguese axe, and it's back was suposed to be squared in order for it to witstand a hit in case of need. You should not grind the bevle or the edge because you will create a friction zone, an area where the axe can easely get stuck that's the reason why it is flat. well keep up with the good work and by the way great job on the power hammer loved to see it work.

When I harden and temper a cutting tool, I heat BEHIND the edge and watch the colour move out. Putting the torch on the edge could overheat and destroy it. How about a line of braze along the crack, and use the different colour as a feature? Just a thought.

So, if the eye is not hardened ... why would you attempt to temper it ? lot of wasted effort
@thelucondrix391
@thelucondrix391 7 жыл бұрын
Even if you messed with the temper of the axe, all you'd have to do is heat it up, requich it, then temper it in an oven at 400°F for several hours till gold straw color. Then good as new, if not better. Also, MIG isn't a good choice of welding for that application as although beautiful, quick, and easy it won't hold up as good as stick, or TIG. The best thing would have probably been first stick, then cover with TIG, or just 2 different grades of stick. LoL. Then that would have cut the probably of breaking to a very low percentage. I've had to do it to a lot of my grandfather's old tools, including axes, and he actually likes them better than before I restored them/fixed them.
@TheGoodoftheLand
@TheGoodoftheLand 7 жыл бұрын
+The Lucondrix You are correct! We did make sure the temper never reached the bit. Just wanted to remove the stress from the weld and ensure the pole and eye were not hardened.
@DragonHide94
@DragonHide94 7 жыл бұрын
I believe what you are trying to say is that you normalized the weld after it cooled. But I'm not sure how much good it will do unless you get it hot enough to austenitize again. Otherwise all you are doing is softening the steel without actually affecting the grain interaction between the axe and the weld. And I'm wondering why you ran that "tempering" up the spine where you ground the axe if you were just going to buff the oxidation colors out anyway. If the axe is already differentially hardened, then you re-softened only part of an already softer part of the axe. I just think it was a bit pointless if you weren't trying to get the temper colors for the visual effect over performance effect. Just my opinion and wondering why you did it the way you did.
@TheGoodoftheLand
@TheGoodoftheLand 7 жыл бұрын
+DragonHide94 Thank you and yes thats what I ment. I figure anyone who was confused would ask and i was to busy to change it in the video. You couldn't see on the video but the heat in the pole is much hotter than the heat in the cheeks . I am interested to see how this turns out. I hope It holds but chances are it will crack. Good cath on the normalization!
@DragonHide94
@DragonHide94 7 жыл бұрын
I would think if the poll/weld was brought up to around non magnetic and a bit past, then cooled slowly, it would greatly reduce the chance of a future crack due to austenite grains growing together. And the preheating as well will help quite a bit along with your other weld prep. I think it has a pretty good chance of surviving.
@TheGoodoftheLand
@TheGoodoftheLand 7 жыл бұрын
+DragonHide94 The thought is that the weld along with the preheat is what brought it to that temp. Then we extedded the cooling time with the heat in the end.

Apply proper process and proper electrode and there wan't be any problem on the axe. For example,I've made myself a hammer for removing slag after MMA welding,and it was also used for correction of tacked steel pieces prior welding.So,on normal 10 ounces hammer head I've welded mild steel 1/2" pipe(different steel than it is used for hammer),and I've used "Capilla" electrode for welding steel of different strength characteristics.For more than two years I've been using it and without a single crack on the bead or near it.Personally,I would avoid MIG welding for this application,and certainly I would wear gloves while welding it. No hard feelings,but your video title might be missleading for people not so familiar with welding.Who knows what was done here before.Maybe someone in his garage have used 6013 rod which is great for amateurs since is not prone to stick on material. ;-)
