Your skills are manifold. I was raised around people just like this including my mother the wood carver/furniture maker and my father the mechanical engineer who saw the world as a conveyor belt of raw material to make beautiful things out of. I thought this type of all around artisan was a dying breed but I see there's still a few of us left. Well done.

+jimmydiresta Hey Jimmy, I just wanted to say you're incredible and your videos along with guys like Paul Sellers have taught me everything I know about wood working and over the last year I've learned so much, starting February I'm going to be apprenticed to a carpenter family friend. I was really impressed at how sharp the axe came out when you did the initial sharpening, you're really good at putting convex edges on axes! It's easy to mess up the geometry. That's one of the most beautiful axes I've ever seen. :D

+Soulman1282 I was watching the vid, not agreeing with all the methods but ah well - the result was looking REALLY good, I loved the way the handle looked. Then I saw black, and I wanted to go and punch the maker of this video. One does NOT simply PAINT a handle, just like one does not kill a puppy. The natural colour and patterns of wood are the most beautiful thing you can get on there, and oil is the best way to preserve it

the legendary kong depends on what kind of a deal you can find, as jimmy once said (not exact words) it’s better to buy a second hand tool of good quality than a new piece of crap, you can get the basics for like $100 if you look in the right places.
@itskidkelly
@itskidkelly 5 жыл бұрын
the legendary kong one really good place to look are flea markets occasionally you’ll find people who are just too old to do it anymore and are selling their equipment for a very good price. If you need an anvil you can actually make a really good one with two railroad tracks welded, sanded, and bolted to a log.

sand blasting cabinet($150-$500 and about 5-10 sq ft of area to use), belt sander table($100-$300 3-8 sq ft), angle grinder($20-$100 store on a shelf, use on a work bench that takes up 20 sq ft), orbital sander($20-$50 shelf), band saw($200-$1000 10-20 sq ft to have enough room to use properly), table saw($100-$600 8-14 sq ft), reuse the bench and hand file($10) for fine shaping of the handle, leather punches and rivet tools($20-$100 used on the bench). To do the project as shown you need at least $1000(probably closer to $2000) for the equipment and over 100 sq ft of space. Not to say you couldnt do it with less and cheaper, but it'd take alot more time and effort. If you've had a shop for years the equipment lasts forever so once you pick up a tool it's easy to lose track of the whole cost over time and it doesnt cost much to store it, but building a shop from scratch is very expensive.

Crazy x Freeze. Yes, actually it is a chamber in which you throw sand on an object using a sandblasting gun. Take a look at this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adl9m7WBmKfbnqs.html

how does that work when you hit the end of the handle to get the axe head on. it isn't butted up against anything I figured it wouldn't do anything
@SeraphimKnight
@SeraphimKnight 8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Becker Recoil causes the heavy axe head to creep up the wood and since it's a snug fit it doesn't slide back down. It's a neat trick that pretty much anyone that knows what they're doing when making axes will employ.

the weight of the axe head is used instead of butting it up against something . you get a better fit this way

I was a bit put off by the color choice for the handle, but it's your prerogative. I was wondering, do you plan to sell that axe? If so, I think the huge signature on the blade guard is a bit on the cheesy side. If it's just for personal use, it makes sense, since you could easily distinguish which axe is yours. But, if it's meant to be sold, a smaller "fancier" signature of some sort, in place of *BIG BLOCK LETTERS*, might have complemented the blade guard a bit better. Just a thought. :)

jimmydiresta Fair enough. Lee Adler Not sure if you meant me or him with that comment, but if it was directed at me, I would hardly say that I hated the end result, as it was certainly much better than I could have possibly done. I just wasn't crazy about it, so I thought it could be valuable to input constructive criticism. He disagreed, so whatever. If I said something like "hurdur, looks stupid xdDDD!" that would be a hater hating. Simply saying where I felt there was room for even more improvement would not. I don't feel like the reply Jimmy gave was all that bad either. He clearly liked how it looked or else he would have taken my advice. I don't believe that he would have been offended by what I would have said, as he seems to be confident in his own abilities as a craftsman; I would be surprised if he would have taken any of what I said to heart. TBH, it's the best possible outcome on both sides, considering the average level of civility in KZfaq comments.

+perky137 yes, but i almost think he uses glass beads, because he had such a nice finish :) If it was sand it must have been a very fine and light kind, sand blasting usually makes a really rough surface, and is often way to agressive :P

What was the purpose for blasting it first? Wouldn't the next steps of grinding and sanding it down accomplished the same thing anyway? Im not criticizing just wondering.
