The arms race just got a significant boost. Russia recently announced the completion of trials for a new variant of its T-14 Armata tank, equipped with a monstrous 152mm cannon. This development marks a substantial leap in firepower compared to the standard 125mm gun and could potentially reshape the balance of power on the battlefield.
The T-14 Armata program has been a closely watched project since its inception. This next-generation tank boasts a crewless turret and advanced automation systems, already exceeding the capabilities of most modern tanks.
Military analysts have long discussed the possibility of a variant with a larger caliber gun, and now those discussions are turning into reality. The addition of this immensely powerful gun elevates the T-14 Armata to a whole new level, potentially granting it the ability to pierce through even the most heavily fortified enemy positions with devastating effect.
Now, with trials successfully concluded, the world waits with bated breath to see when and how this super-tank might be integrated into the Russian military.
There's no doubt that the latest T-14 Armata tank variant, boasting a formidable 152mm cannon, packs a much bigger punch than its predecessor. However, official Russian sources claim the upgrade goes deeper than just firepower.

Forget the cannon, they need an ANTI-DRONE variant, with full ECM jamming, drone countermeasures and serialized "cope cages" for modern warfare. All I see is another moving target, doesn't matter how big the main cannon is when a $5,000 drone wipes it out.

Based upon images of the 2A83‘s 152mm APFSDS shell, it’s unlikely that it would be a revolutionary thing as opposed to the Rh-130 or the ASCALON, as it’s penetrator is only about the same length as the LKE-II penetrator of the DM53, DM63 and DM73. There’s an upper limit to muzzle velocity, and the Rh-120 L/55A1 with DM73 already comes pretty close.

@@torides. Correct, they do have speed selection, however THAT is in radar software, not hardware. Drone can be recognized by its behaviour as a target. For example FPV drone isn't slow either, and when it's attacking a target it reaches some decent speeds. Tank rounds? Indeed. Muzzle velocity of a tank round is 1500-1700m/s. Afganit APS is stated to target incoming tank rounds to destabilize/degrade them.

I imagine that's a major factor in not deploying it since even with and active protection system there is a good chance it doesn't have enough charges to properly protect against drone attacks. Add the part where mobility kills in the conflict are often worse then having your turret knocked out of action, and I think its safe to say the T-14 will not be deployed to the front without major changes to both the tank and the stage of the conflict.

There‘s an upper limit to potential muzzle velocity with conventional guns (which Russia supposedly already exceeded with its 2A82 design). There’s also an optimal length-diameter ratio for APFSDS. The only way to improve upon existing designs, assuming you’re already at the optimal shape and muzzle velocity, is a longer shell. So unless the 2A83 boasts a larger penetrator at the same velocity, there isn’t any benefit in terms of armor penetration capacity to the larger caliber.

Soviet tanks were first and foremost developed for infantry support and western tanks were largely influenced by soviet military doctrine in the 50-60s, that being a breakneck tank charge through the whole Europe. So NATO, having an advantage in nuclear warhead, had concluded all they need is to just stop soviet tank blitzkrieg and nuke the rest. That's why our tanks to this day prioritize simplicity of design and reliability (T-55, for example, had to stay combat ready while stranded amidst nuclear wasteland for prolonged time), where's western tanks are glorified self-propelled anti-tank guns.

I hope that the replacement of the barrel or the increase in caliber on the T 14 Armata but will be done very quickly, since this is the only solution at the moment given the use of FPV drones. In essence, 152 mm is the minimum needed to destroy the fortifications, and at the moment it is the most important for the troops at the front. In essence, this is the best self-propelled howitzer in the world, which will have a much higher level of protection for the crew as well as other electronic device. Even if a stabilizer is installed at the rear with the replacement of the barrel, it will still be the best weapon at the front, given that, unlike the self-propelled howitzer, the T-14 Armata 152 mm will be able to fire at least the first shell from the move, and very accurately, which is the most important thing, and after that it could lower the stabilizers and fire the next 3-5 shells from the spot, and then move on

I thought that the reason the Russians went with the T-90 M instead of the T-14 was that they wanted to change the prototype before putting it into production. Modern weapons make it very difficult for tanks to operate on the battlefield or even reach it. They need to have effective defenses against missiles and drones. The upgrade to 152mm doesn't offer as much when it comes to penetration, because that is limited by the amount of energy you can put into the shell and same energy in a smaller shell is more penetration. This gun is probably going to shoot APFDS shells that are not much more powerful than the 125mm ones, although they probably going to be very powerful anyway. Tanks in the current conflict work as assault guns, and having a HE shell, cluster munition shell or thermobaric shell that is twice as heavy as the one in 125mm is very valuable when harassing enemy entrenched positions - which is what tanks seem to be doing - a single tank drives up to get line of sight on enemy positions, like a forest line or village, fires a shell, moves, fires a shell, moves, repeat a few more times, then drops smoke and leaves. With the barrel lifespan of 280 shots this tank is not going to be used as mobile artillery, unless for precision fire with a Krasnopol shell. Although, they probably have also designed the barrel to be easy to exchange and field repair units will have decent supply of spare barrels they can replace the used ones with, without the need of sending the tank back to factory.

I think tanks are a waste of money and time. a modernized BMP 3, with cage armor and better thermal vision for commander and drone integration would be better suited for any war. Having both a 100mm smoothbore gun and a 30mm autocannon it can deal with anything, from fortifications with 100mm HE rounds to long distance tanks with atgm shot through the 100mm cannon and infatry and other vehicles with the 30mm autocannon. Can also transport troops. A bmp-3 that can survive artillery sharpnel and fpv drones would do much more work on the battlefield than any tank. There is no point in having 10 million mm RHA armor on the front if a simple fpv drone can destroy your engine or track or penetrate your turret armor from above.

The T-14 was originally built around the 152mm, but then opted for the more common 125mm because the ammunition was more readily available. However I should note that Russian tanks do have the capability to be used in indirect fire support roles also been this case since the T55 so they are dual use.
