The all-new 2014 Mercedes C-class is the most important model the firm will launch over the next few years. The exec saloon takes styling cues from the S-class, but the real question is can it outperform the BMW 3-series?

The all-new Mercedes-Benz C-class is set to be here for a while, because Mercedes isn't planning on replacing this fifth-generation C-class for another seven years. So, until 2021, this is the C-class, and if ever Mercedes needed to get a car right, and get it right from the word go, this is it.
It's a touch bigger than before, both inside and out, but, crucially, it's also between 70kg and 100kg lighter than the previous model. And it's more aerodynamically efficient, which, in turn, helps it to be more ecologically efficient, too. But is it better to drive? Steve Sutcliffe finds out.

Dude you keep talking about complexity like most car buyers are morons. I think people who buy such cars and spend that much money know exactly what they are going into. Also since most of the C-class buyers are young, such technology will not frustrate them as it frustrates you.

there are useful features, there are features that add to the luxurius feeling, and then there are the totally useless features like this stupid think where you right letters. i've seen it in some Audi models too and it feels ridiculous and useless. no one said it should be like a Polo, but some companies use features that are useless just for the WOW effect

63 now has no meaning whatsoever, E63 now 5.5L, next C63 4.0L...... 6.2L NA V8 is dead and that's quite sad....

One of the first reviews i didn't like. 1. there is nothing like too much tech in a car. You can either not use it or just don't buy that option in the first place. 2. you said almost nothing specific about how the car drives (it drives good is not enough) 3. it's the first car in it's class with air suspension. Please something more about that. How it feels on a bad roads, difference between normal and air suspension...

Aside from the faux ipad being glued to the dash, the interior looks amazing. I love how the center console buttons all lay flush against it but don't protrude out. Also, I love that mercedes still recognizes that buttons are better than touchscreens. Hands down.

I think this is the best compact executive car out there. It has the best interior, I think it has the best exterior. Also what got me was 155bhp from a 4 Cylinder Diesel? I think they really stretched out the gearing to give it be big top speed and better fuel economy, probably the reason why the 0-60 time isn't that impressive.

Well.... it's not really that outstanding, knowing that no later than in 2004 BMW had a 320d with 150 bhp. I'm not their fan, i'd even say hater, but really, 150 out 2l is not an achievement these days.

The C250 Bluetec Has 204hp and 500 Nm of torque ( For comparison a BMW M4 has 550 Nm). Please don't slate an engine if you don't no your numbers.

Compare it to the 3 Series? What a joke! Reviewers nowadays have no eye for pretty things and hold a prejudice with BMW! Compare with Audi A4 which is the new legitimate reference! 75% BMW owners I know don't drive their cars and prefer the bus or their second Toyota or Honda! All other car owners except BMW drive their cars and I personally think the 3 and 5 series of BMW do not offer precise driving! They are not as precise as a Merc or Audi. And all BMW have basically same interior design which I hate!

Sorry if I've hurt your feelings :) I don't own them, but I've driven 3,5 series, c200, A4, E250,.. And BMW are very awesome cars like the rest of the pack. They have a long history, are DTM champions and luxurious. The 5 series is quite OK, but BMW ruined the back of both 5 and 3 series and they are not on par with C class, A4 and A6, ISF designwise.I'm not impressed,but that's my choice! But the 4 series is absolutely gorgeous.It's like a 3 and 5 series fused and in right proportions. Saw one in silver some weeks back and it simply is amazing. It's the 4 series which should be compared to C class and A4/A5!

Edgar Diomande This can be compared to Samsung.They sell in millions,but doesn't mean they are the best. It must be agreed that this new c class is gorgeous.If not, then we have very different taste of cars! HTC (Audi), LG and Sony(Merc) look better and on par spec-wise! The 4 series, new C class and A4 are the best looking. And I've never said that BMW are sh*t.I was comparing and never said they are the worst.U misunderstood me. And the top 10 reliable cars feature: Lexus which is the topper and can really not be compared to a BMW or a Merc. A luxurious car with good looks and the best engine(Toyota) is simply above these! Audi is also in the top 10. But Merc and BMW are not even in the top 10!!! Hope this change coz I know some people who got problems with the turbo of BMW and compressor of Merc!

Dude, BMW doesn't offer precise driving? Have you ever driven an A6? The steering feels like a cheap computer steering wheel with no feeling whatsoever. Mercs are somewhat in between. They are bested by BMW and Audi on the dynamic side but tops them in other respects like comfort and interior. Please stop being a troll, nobody's gonna give a shit on you.

The C250CDI that I have has a gem of an engine and is both powerful and economical. My only grouse is that it sounds like my diesel genset at times!

Re 1:57 Wow, 65.7 mpg combined. That's pretty damn good. That's better than my 750cc motorcycle, which gets 33.5 mpg average, according to MCN.

It will be the best car in its class. The tech & quality matches (even beats) an A6 & 535i, let alone a measly 328i. Once Mercedes sorts out the production car's finer details, I'll be a new luxury standard. I would ditch thedl diesels altogether since Mercedes really makes some economic 4 pot petrol units. The 2.0 unit found in the A250/B250 is quite good. It'll ve even better with the C350 3.5 306hp V6. And later on a 335i killer C400 we can look forward to. What I don't like is the exterior design. A mini S-class is nice but lacks the edgy/sporty look of the late w204. The ipad infotainment unit vs. W204 facelifted built-in unit also feels like a downgrade to an otherwise great looking interior.

theokan89 Any BMW made before 2009 I'd admit they're pretty good driving cars. The F10 5ers & F30 3ers are the best antithesis to what BMW stood for. The new 2 is even a bigger joke to the company who branded themselves "ultimate driving machine". Welcome to 2014 where a Cadillac (ATS) & Lexus (IS350) drive BETTER than any 3 series period. The only people who buys a BMW now only do so for the badge, or a wannabe-jock.

Before 2009, they were still the best in class. markets change, businesses have to change (hence: fuel saving elect. steering). After 2009, its still the best within competition because all other brands have switched to number steering also. Want the best drivers car within the competition? I repeat: BUY A BMW and leave the audis&merc's for wifeswappers and tech geeks with ham fists.

my dad has a car with that engine, i think it's brilliant because of the torque. it's really effortlessly quick for civilized driving. of course it's not epic but you're in a mercedes diesel saloon, it's not made to be driven hard. interior is amazing btw.

I think its great that you can get the looks of an amg interior etc and still get miserly gas mileage from a diesel. Its the best of both worlds.. hopefully uk and Canada will get the Lux trim option with the auto shutter grill.

All the talk about how unnecessary the electronics are and how complicated the car is... Just shut up. What the hell? Both Audi and BMW have had a bunch of driving modes (including individual tailoring) for quite some time now. Also, both Audi and Bimmer use touchpads now too. So why ffs would you brag about all that technology being in the C-Class? You've never had a problem with those features being put in A4 and the 3-Series. At least on screen you haven't. This is utter nonsense. It's been covered in the past that they mainly started putting touchpads in the cars, because of the increased demand from Asian markets, which use complex alphabets and so on...

So, 220 BLUETEC is going 0-62 mph in 7.4s,and you are telling us that 250 BLUETEC wich is 1.2s faster in the W204, goes 0-62 mph in 8.1s? I can't believe that you,as very well known car show,can't do your only job correctly. And there is just no way that all that equipment cost only 3.500 pounds. Just Navi and Burmester audio is that much. Or just AMG interior,and exterior is that much. In Germany,the price goes from 36-70.000e for a 200 model,and you are saying us that you pay only about 4.000e for all that equipment? OMG,YOU HAD ONE JOB! ONE JOB !!!

I really like this interior. specially with wood trim. The 3 series on the other hand is just not to my taste at all. It's a shame because I thought the previous model in the 3 Series range was a really good car.

i like the way it looks, but even in the video engine noise is awful, in this day and age diesels can and do sound much nicer than the one in this car i think i would still go for the 3 series, also looking forward to see how the estate version will look like

The lease on my 2011 G25x expires in 5 months and I just started looking for my new car. Tough decision between Audi A4, Volvo S50 (yes, Volvo) and The C Class but the C class interior is AMAZING...its definitely my current front runner.

Well done Mercedes, awesome car indeed. It does borrow the styling from the bigger brother S Class but still manage to distinguish it apart unlike Audi, every car looks more and more similar in their line up. Can't wait for the AMG Version !

Well atleast its an honest review. I was wondering what the engine would feel like, because I had thoughts that it just wasnt as good as the old 320 cdi. (204 ps-6cylinder) I'll wait for the 350 CDI/bluetec if that ever comes out. Otherwise, the c 220 cdi might be a better option with a single turbocharger instead of the biturbo in the 250.

The engine sounds like the 1.7 in my Astra - similar noise. I quite like it in my car, though; in a spanking new, 40k executive saloon, it sounds quite foul. Still, the rest of the package looks bang up to date. Kudos to Mercedes, thus.

excuse me but looks like a briliant car, and 201bhp is slow? and its even 100kg less than the previous which had 184bhp? i dont think this is slow,its a family car BLUETECH, and you cant compare it with porsche macan, which is different category and its diesel. what about fuel economy 61mpg isnt good? u didnt mention!

People buy 4 cylinder diesels because of the more economical working, not for the sound! Comparing to the Macans V6 diesel is simply stupid. And finally there wasn't a word about the styling, because for me its mindblowing, compared to the rivals (it doesn't mean that those are ugly, they're still fine). This is my opinion, I'd go for the C class anyday. I hope Autocar will test the petrol versions of it.

This winds me up. It's not Mercedes fault you don't know how to use relevant modern technology most buyers will absolutely love. You've also failed to mention that the 20d engined BMW cars are amongst the worst sounding diesels on the market, loud and clattery engines, especially when mated to the manual gearbox option. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you also the reviewer who thought attempting to drift the BMW i3 was a good idea and relevant to how the car performs?

I quite like the screen, each to their own I guess: I can't help but wonder though why in this day and age they didn't make it touchscreen. Entry level cars in lower price brackets are fitted with such tech and I really think mercedes dropped the ball on that. As it is I'm trading my 3 series bimmer for the sport premium c class and that's mainly based on the interior which BMW haven't really changed in. ..... Well. .... ever.

i just can't believe the words you say!, how can you say theres 'a bit too much tech' on it. you're wrong, completely wrong...... i mean, thats what we are all expecting more tech features on cars interiors!!

How can he think that is complicated? Car systems are so far behind what we use everyday in mobile devices. This just catches up a bit. You can tell he doesn't really know tech from him saying "it's like an iphone".. lol :) He probably uses a smartphone as a phone, maybe angry birds :) Anyway, I would buy the one with the biggest engine if I wanted a good engine, not the bluetech. This C400 might replace my 400 hp 2013 wrx sti as daily driver.. I like the interior much better than the Audi S4. Then I wait for the Alfa 4C to come out in Canada for my summer car :))) Was going to get a GT-R but I can have two amazing cars for the same price and still go on a quiet, luxurious, comfortable road trip in one of them and tear down mountain roads with the other :))

I have the US version of this car, the C300. I agree with him about the mouse/clickwheel being a bitch to use but it looks cool. I can't comment about the engine he's reviewing since mine is a 241hp with 273 lb ft torque turbo, and it moves just fine.

you driving diesel and you want nice noise ! blue tec not made for that it you want test the normal petrol or wait for the monster amg

0-62 is 8,1 this is wrong information beacuse 220 blu tec go 7,4 with automatic gearbox. 250 is much faster and this motor is briliant!

The engine in the Porsche Macan diesel it's an 3.0l V6 with 258hp. The engine in this C-Class that he's testing it's an 2.1l 4 cylinder in line diesel with 204hp. Of course the V6 diesel in the Porsche will sound better than de 4 cylinder diesel in the Mercedes. So I don't think you can compare those engines.
